  • Nice video but maybe talk instead of typing and music so much.

  • video is too fast, i have to keep stopping it so that i can view the video AND read at the same time without missing anything.

  • Thank you! My fiance gets her mom to do this on for her scrub pants. I'd like to start doing it for her :)

  • i thumbed this down because the music is 2 sad

  • @RoberTastic that's retarded to thumb it down for such.

  • This video was somewhat helpful. But it would be better if you explained what you were doing instead of playing music. Maybe the music gives the video the vibe you are after, but what I really want to know is how to hem pants.

  • How is someone supposed to read the captions and watch the techniques demonstrated at the same time (it's not possible !). And on top of this, the music is incredibly distracting when you're trying to read and take in these techniques (he says, as someone who is actually trying this for the first time). All in all, a very slick trendy production - but I'm not sure what your goal is with this video ??

  • Thanks for making such a useful video :)

  • Great video but I personally prefer to do it with Style Snaps, you don't need to use needle or a thread because its snap adjustable hem solution that is reusable and safe with every fabric. I found it here at stylesnapsforhems.info

  • @Willcoop81 stop advertising this crap on every hemming video. I tried those snaps from CVS and they're crap!

  • You have beautiful hands!

And this video was really, really helpful. To be true I am working on my dress pants right now. Yea, 3:27am Eastern Time.

    :P

  • This is handy. But how do I make the hem of my jeans resemble a commercial hem? The one which looks like they rolled it up, folded it down, and then sewed it flat.

  • I accidentally sowed my hands together! thanks alot >:[

  • that is a lot of work.

  • Thanks so much! My pants look great! I knew how to cut the pants, ha ha, that's easy, I just didn't know the stitch pattern. Super easy and they look great!

  • This is one of the best videos on hemming that I've watched...you really made the instructions easy to follow. I have a few pairs of pants that I haven't worn because I don't want to pay for them to be hemmed so I'll definitely try this! thanks!

  • thanks for this! i freehand sew a lot of dolls on my sewing machine, and thanks to you, i will actually do something practical with my machine!

  • Interesting. I just give them a cut, a fold and sew the fold. Looks like new. This looks overly complicated. I guess if I had ultra expensive pants, buy isn't it less work to just buy a pair that fits?

  • @florida995

Not everyone has the funds just to go out and buy new pants whenever. Some people are struggling just to pay the bills....

  • does this also work for if i want to make my old jeans shorts?

  • @NatalieMOwczarerk old jeans into shorts*

  • @NatalieMOwczarerk Um, yep - you can hem anything using these ideas. Just mark it where you want to have it finished and go from there.

  • Wow! This video is great. It's nice to see someone so skilled with the thread and needle.

  • thanks for this! used it tonite to hem my pants

  • Thank you!

  • oh you were on threadbangers!

  • One of the best, most helpful videos I've ever watched. So well done. Thank you so much!

  • I like how the lyrics of the song went with the video :)

  • Super Thanks!

  • whats the difference between cross-sticthing and blind stitching

  • @sourcreampuff Depending on what you mean by blind stitching, perhaps just the name. The idea in both cases is to make sure the stitch on the outside is as invisible as possible.

  • WHEEEEEEEEEEE....probably the best part of the video

  • WOW, I'm going to buy a sewing machine and hem all my trousers with the hope that I do not butcher them. I should buy a machoine which performs a serge stitch?

  • the instructions and vid are just SUPER. Hemming my new tuxedo pants TONITE because of your instructions! Hope your family appreciates how talented you are!

  • Totally agree The music is distracting and you will never find something everyone likes. A commentary would be better.

  • where are you located?! lol my husband asked me to hem his dress pants but im toooo scared! :)

  • @vero331 Take your time and you'll be fine!

  • For distressed jeans, how would u hem the jeans with the original bottoms?

  • @mreisma That depends on how much you want the original hem to stay, or if you can live with the new hem becoming distressed over time. The machine way I have shown will eventually end up wit the distressed look.

  • Do you hem jeans in the same way, or do you do something different?

    Great video (Y) xxx

  • @rockdollxD You can hem them the same way, just find thread that matches the original colour and thickness - likely cotton jean thread…

  • @Halyma Thank you for replying to my comment. It meant that I re-discovered your video and can turn up my work trousers correctly. Thank you once again :)

  • @rockdollxD sorry it took me so long - happy hemming!

  • ooo what song is that ?D:

  • @spawn0777 It's listed in the description along with a link - enjoy!

  • thank youuuuuuuuuu

  • PLEASE lose the rotten, distracting music! It would be better if you verbally described what you are doing anyway, in addition to the written text.

  • Thank you so much for this video!!!!! It was so helpful and easy to follow. I've got pants that were bought months ago and never worn. Finally I can just hem them myself, you totally made it look so simple.

  • This is so helpful! We just paid $23 to have 2 pairs of my husband's dress pants hemmed. Yikes. Will be great to be able to do it myself.

  • Awesome! Marry me? :D

  • @frbjeffj LOL - thanks for that - you made my day! My Husband said no though…:-D

  • Thanks Tracey. Now I must get to work. Job good as done thanks to you.

  • Thanks a lot! This was very helpful.

  • Thanks sooo much for this video. Now i get paid $5.00 by my mom when i hem her pantsXD It's very easy to follow. May i suggest that you put the instuctions in the decription, that way we can copy and paste , then print? you don't have to if you dont want to though...

    P.S. I love the music

  • @micaeangela That's a great idea - mind you I'm just back from a holiday and going to be a bit hectic for the next while, but I'll see what I can do about your suggestion - thanks for it!

  • by far the most helpful video out there. THANKS!

  • @monicaloveslindy Thanks! Glad it was helpful!

  • Watched your video and hemmed my interview slacks by hand. They look better than the taylor and no puckering. Thanks!

  • @poachedice That's great to hear!

  • I wish 1:31-1:36 was slowed down since it was the most important step.

  • I need to hem some work pants but I think I am screwed....

  • Thank you. I was able to make some $ hemming some pants this weekend, using your video!

  • This is definately the most helpful video! Thanks very much! :-)

  • This is possibly the most helpful video ever. Thanks for posting it. I'll definitly come back and watch it over and over and over to hem up my MANY pairs of pants. I'm so short..... why can't they make pants for SHORT people like me? I'm too short for even the 'petite' pants legs! LOL

  • @cutechong Thanks - I am glad it works for you! Happy Hemming!

  • @Halyma Yup! I'll probably post a response video IF I ever get my windows movie maker working. ^^;

  • are you roz from fraiser??

  • your pacing is strange. and for a how to video, you should talk us through it, instead of playing good music, you know, for us non multi taskers.

  • i like the song, and i laughed at the last 2 seconds hahaa thanks for the lesson!

  • This is clearly a woman's domain. If I tried to hem my pants, I think they'd probably end up looking like a pair of shorts...a ruined pair of shorts.

  • @Davertin Maybe that has less to do with anything being specifically a "woman's domain" and more to do with personal skill sets :-)

Do whatever you do well and leave the hemming to the pros - men or women:-D

  • This is great - at 5'0" and just learning how to sew, this was really helpful! I can pull out some of those long pants and try hemming them instead of relying on wearing heels all the time. =) Excellent vid - I don't have audio at the moment, but the close, step-by-step footage and explanatory text boxes were VERY appreciated! Also liked the difference shown between hemming regular dress pants and jeans. Good to know!

  • @lenaf007 Thanks! And since the audio is actually a fun rock tune by a local Ottawa Band, you don't have to worry about not having it!

  • um question, why are you unstiching the original hem line then ironing it out if ur just gonna cut it off?

the video did help dont get me wrong but that was just buggin me lol

  • @9635841

If the pants are really long, then you are right, you can just cut it off, but many times I have to hem pants about 1 inch/2.5cm and the original hem needs to be let down first , since cutting it off would make the pants too short.

    Hope that helps clarify

  • Classic. Thanks you for the info Halyma. it was very helpful. I'm just learning how to sew. Great tunes too!

  • Thank you that was so insightful!

  • Thanks for the hemming tutorial; it was easy to follow and I loved the music. As for the differing opinions posted here, some people are visual learners and some are auditory learners. Visual learners will naturally appreciate this video more.

  • Thanks for pointing out the awareness of different learning styles - certainly it was a choice in how I created the video and I figured people would be able to hit pause and read if they needed to clarify anything!

  • You're cute.

  • Wow! Thank you so much for posting this. Incredibly helpful!

  • great tute... helped me greatly with an alteration project for a friend. thank you! and unlike others, I know how to use my volume control and pause button. ;)

  • there is nothing wrong with the music at all you ppl are just so fucking picky! anyways was a great video, easy to understand and quick, great job!

  • @hydrolist1 yea man.. music does suck but good video =)

  • cool

  • good instruction but the music plug was as tacomadancer commented was better synched with a different vid.

  • cvcxhfv

  • Thank you for the video. Video was great help! :)

  • Thank you for the video. I will be hemming pants tonight.

For the folks who don't like the music.... Search for a video on how to turn the sound down on a youtube video.

  • Thanks tanuki505!

  • @tanuki505

Also just turn your volume down on your computer...

  • i liked the whole thing music and prentation... not wordy at all. to the point. great!

  • Just watched the video. Very to the point and not wordy. I like the music and that there was text not oral instructions. My question is, would you need to switch to a thicker needle when hemming jeans? Why when hemming the jeans did you not need more than one straight stitched hem? Will that be durable?

    Thanks!!!

  • Sorry I have been slow to reply - was away on holidays! Yes switch to a heavier needle for jeans. and yes one row of sewing should be fine. There really is not a lot of stress on the hem, unless you are pulling on the bottom of your pants for some reason...:-)

  • Nice instruction, but music was horrible-made it too hectic.

  • I enjoyed it...fast and to the point. The music made it fun too!

  • That's amazing! This is going to help me so much when I make my first cosplay costume!

    <3

  • LOL @ cosplay

  • Video was great help! Love the music!

  • That was a great video! It was to the point and the music was not annoying.

  • Very helpful video.. I need to hem the pants on my Karate gi and I was really curious how to finish off the cut edge with the sewing machine. You video helped. Thanks

  • hi. thanks but the music and text got me so distracted. still need to find a good hemming vid!

  • completely agree

  • Wow. Couldn't finish the video cuz the music got in the way. Too bad.

  • You could've turned the speakers off, or press mute. The music is distracting from the content, I'll give you that... but I still liked it.

  • it's not the music. it's that you have to look at the text ANd her movements at the same time. it's hard to follow for that reason.

  • Wonderful! So exact, clear, and non-crazy-making. Thank you for your help!

    Greenmiao :)

  • Fabulous! Glad to have helped!

  • I have this brand new jumper that needed hemming!!! Its been in the closet for a year... Guess who's wearin it this summer ?! Thanx :)

  • great video. it is a little fast and the music is annoying/distracting, but the instruction is thorough and helpful. thanks!

  • great job on the instructional video...

every short person on the planet should know how to hem their pants!! LOL

  • this was wonderful! So very helpful. I had to keep pausing and rewatching but now I think I am ready to hem correctly! Thanks so much for going to the work of posting this.

  • Does anyone know how to add some lenght to the waist of pants--say an inch?

  • I'd been using iron-on seam tape to hem my pants, and packing tape at work when the hem inevitably fell out! This was amazing - hem looks professional and I'm so proud of myself - all thanks to this video! :)

  • goo vidoe, but the music is really distracting. I'm trying to learn something and then the music made me have to keep rewinding.

  • Great video. Question, do you have a video showing how to "Take In" at the waist, making the pants smaller at the waist. I am man that rather take in his own pants than to pay my local cleaners an expensive amount.

  • I don't at this point, but that's a good idea. If the pants are men's dress pants with the white/grey inside waistband, they are made to be taken in on the one seam up the centre back.

1 - unstitch the loose holding stitch that keeps that white band down a few inches to each side of the centre back.

2 - sew along the Centre Back seam from the curved part /crotch up through the waist band, taking it in as much as needed.

3 - fold down the white waist band again and retack it by hand.

  • Great but I'd rather you talked. It's kind of hard to watch the action and also read the text. Thanks.

  • Thanks for the kind words - I am glad this clip is helping so many people!

  • I just wanted to thank you. These are the best instructions i've run into.

  • Awesome instructions, will check your web.

    Great song too!!!

  • Is there anyway to hand hem your pants without machinery at all?

  • Yes, you can choose to not finish the edge at all and just stitch it up by hand - as shown or in your own way. I would suggest making the stitches a bit deeper into the unfinished edge or folding under the unfinished edge to enclose it completely. It may add a bump if the fabric is very heavy, but that may not be important if you really don't have access to a machine.

  • I am doing everything as you do, yet I end up with a pucker! I am working on my husband's pants which are very large, turning up a hem that is slightly narrower than the pantleg. Any tips? Thanks!

  • Hi HIndasound,

I am actually surprised that you are the first person to have this problem - it was the one thing I did not touch on in the instructions, as most of the styles when I shot this were straight leg or flared.

On each side seam, sew a straight line, from where you will fold the hem, to the cut hem edge. It should start on the existing sewing line and then go out into the seam allowance. Pick out the original sewing line, just in the folded up area. This should give the ease you need

  • Thanks so much! I had actually solved it: it was the way I place my pins!! My whole life I had been putting hem pins perpendicular to the fold-up edge. I re-pinned the way you did it and voila! Ease-y Peasy ;) Thanks again!

  • Great - always good to learn something new isn't it?

  • Thank you Tracy. I wanted to learn a little before I attempt to hem my own pants. My wife just slapped the back of my head and said she knows what to do!

  • real skaters and freestyle bikers hem their pants! Thats what I do!

  • great vid but get rid of the music. I'd rather her your voice walking me threw the demo. thanks

  • I would have preferred Beethoven's 5th...but otherwise, excellent video!

  • Well made video with very clear instructions and helpful tips from an expert for a professional-looking finished product. Loved learning that alternating hem stitch! Great working music in the background, too.

  • This is so generous for you to post your expertise here. I am about to be a beginner and am going to trying hemming (out of necessity) as my first "project"!

  • thanks so much i'm 5'2" and all the cute pants i ever come across are too short for me...don't think i'll have too many problems if i learn this .

  • Thank you so much! Since my mom and grandma died I didn't know who to ask to help me. Now I know how!

  • You are most welcome. I learned to sew from my mom and her mother, so I understand the link to the past that sewing has!

  • Very nice video! I have some pants I need to hem and this was great. Thanks. :D

  • My God! I really wanted to concentrate on learning from your video, but your soundtrack made that impossible. Please get rid of that awful music!

  • I appreciate the taste in music is subjective :-) But just slide the volume level down, there is no talking anyway, and that way you can read through the directions at your leisure!

  • Great help, just hemed 3 pair of pants with the help of this video. Only thing is.... I did not like the music in the background, to much. Maybe a little softer, mellow music would be better or you talking through the steps! Thanks again!

  • I will be shooting more hopefully helpful videos this fall and remind people to turn down the volume if I choose music you don't like! But really appreciate the comments and will take it into consideration for future projects!

  • Tracy....what kind of ruler did you use? It seemed to have a sliding guide to mark the edge> I WANT ONE OF THOSE> :D

  • It is called a Gauge.

  • ahhh thank you so much. that helped a ton.

  • Thanks a lot! Your instructions were clear and invaluable to my pants-hemming adventure!

  • you're great! now i can fix my trousers ahaha

  • was that a tool song??

  • This is great, i was looking around for something and this really helped. thanks

  • This was realy helpful and very detailed. I usually call my Gramma for a refresher, but she is gone now and this was amazingly helpful. THANK YOU

  • This is a wonderful video! It was very helpful.

    Thank you!!!

  • Thanks - this helped a lot!

  • Thanks very much for this. I watched several videos about how to hem trousers on the web, and this is easily the best. The close shots really helped!

  • Thanks a tons ,you have guided me in the right path , can I have your email so I can take guidance from you at times. God Bless you.

  • Thank you for this instructional video. I am so glad there are people like you who take the time to help people!

  • Thanks for this great video. You made it look so easy to do and it's great that you showed how to hem by hand and with the machine. I'm really curious about the tool you used for markings. I've never seen it in any sewing stores around here. Sure it's a ruler but what's it called specifically and where can I get one?

  • thanks heaps for putting this video up, maybe next time you ditch the music and talk us through it.

  • Yes, I agree. Great video - very, very helpful! Thanks a million! But, I find the music very annoying because I have to concentrate...um...I've never sewed a hem before! (How embarrassing!)

  • What would you do if you wanted the jeans hem to look similar to the original? Just add another stitch around, maybe a cm lower?

  • Sure - if you have two rows of stitching, you can just measure the distnace between them - usually it is the width of the sewing machine foot, not quite a full cm. more like 6mm-7mmm [ about 1/4 inch].

  • Yey! Can finally get my act together. Thanks for the simple clear written and video instructions. I am assuming the same for all hems...am I correct???

  • Yes, this technique works for skirts, dresses, pants, whatever. For any garment that does not hit the floor, have someone help measure all the way around from the ground up to the finished level.

Maybe another video is in store...

  • IN response to the song question:

Trendy Takers by Sojourn - just pause the clip shortly after I finish speaking amd you'll find their website! - or I'll edit the notes in the description!

And I am really glad so many of you are helped by this video - hope to get more done in the future!

    T

  • It's Saturday evening, I needed new trousers for Monday morning and the ones I bought are way too long of course. Tailors on a Saturday in Sydney, few and far between but I reckon I can follow these good tips...a couple of beers might help too. Nice vid Tracy!

  • What is the song in the background?

  • OMG!!!! I didn't know it is so easy, anyone can do it..even an ordinary guy. I am gonna hem my pants this weekend!

THank you for posting this video!

  • that's so awesome. People are always asking me if I can hem thir pants. And now I can say yes :P lol :D

  • Thanks for the tip. I now know how to sew a hem on a pair of pants thanks to this video...you should have seen what the hem on my pants looked like before... eeesh!!!

  • Just the info I needed! Thanks alot. The text was great. I could freeze frame and follow step by step. It worked out very well.

  • Very helpful, thanks!

  • Seemed a lil complicated, what happened to just suing a needle and some thread.
