Massoud's action wasn't on civilians in Kabul, to defend men & women, and was against communism party and Pakistani state maker Hekmatyar who on behalf of the government of Pakistan destory either Kabul City or its people for gaining power. @MEG - Massoud was in any case a Muslim. At the same time, he was moderate. What I want to say is that he was never an extremist neither in his private nor political life. Massoud & Hekmatyar subsequently had vehement disputes since Massoud absolutely opposed terrorist activities. He saw in them just the destruction of the people he actually wanted to serve. He believed that a modern moderate Islam could work in Afghanistan. Gulbuddin Islam was to make 5th state for Pakistan not to serve people.

@MEGAMAN91210 - The Russians couldn't combat against Commander Massoud's fight against their illegal invasion, the Russians announced and sent a proposal to have a bilateral political talk with Commander Massoud, because they weren't able to win the war and defeat Com. Massoud all the way through military so they requested for set up a ceasefire, then later Commander Massoud slanged that no ceasefire upto his standard until revolution achieved and Russians withdraw its troops from Afghanistan.

This guy did good things for Afghanistan as far as I can tell, and seems absolutely deserving of the status as a national hero. It's a tragedy he was assassinated and usurped by the Pakistan-Saudi-funded Taliban. Under Massoud, the UN reported no major human-rights violations. Compare that to the Russians before him and the Taliban after him. I hope Afghanistan can find its feet again.
