Big's story DID have quite a bit to do with the main story...

Most of it had to do with Froggy rather than Big, though, because Froggy ate Chaos's tail, and that caused Froggy's mind to be posessd by the tail, which is why he was constantly running around, as if he was looking for something, which was most likely Chaos trying to get its tail back.

Basicly, Froggy's tail possesed him and made him chase Chaos.

And Froggy (wile posessed by Chaos's tail) ate the emerald. That's probably why Froggy was chasing Chaos.

Big isn't a bad character, he just wasn't used right. He would work best as a side-character. (Or perhaps still playable if it's a racing/fighting/party game) He doesn't need to have a full-blown story that's one dimensional and has near nothing to do with the main story. As if that's not bad enough, his levels use the god-awful fishing minigame that's abrasive as all hell with the othr characters.
