  • Please tell me you get paid alot for those skills...

  • @FilthyFloor I make some decent money drumming, but I'm certainly not paying my rent with drumming alone unfortunately. ;)

  • @drumology2001 I feel your pain, my brother.

  • Every time I watch this video I'm amazed at the dynamic control around the kit, simply incredible!

  • awesome

  • Now that's some groovy tasting gravy."

  • less really is more:D

  • Super Taste. I'm going to show the first couple of minutes of this to students to illustrate how to effectively use spacing to funkify grooves. Thanks man.

  • That's awesome! Thank *you* for the comment. I'm flattered that you think this is good enough to share with your students. Makes my day! :D

  • such a great example of controlled chaos! not all great solos have to be crazy, great inspiration for young drummers like me :) thanks for posting and keeping true music alive!

  • Thanks for writing such a nice comment, Matt! Glad you liked it, brother. :D

  • You know youve done well when an audience waits to clap for a little bit after a solo cuz they don't know if your gonna jam some more or if your done.....they waited a good damn long time! great job!

  • Thanks! I think they waited because they didn't know if I had another flurry of ridiculous up my sleeve, but I didn't - that was all. ;)

  • beast.

  • dude

  • definitely just made me want to go play for 3 hours straight. You are awesome and i wish to become like you someday!

  • Righteous! Glad to hear it! Can't wait to see your card trick videos go up, too - I *love* magic, ET! :D

  • hey, what we have here, steve gadd? dennis chambers?

This solo is... wow, and your drumming fit perfectly on the keys solo.

  • Thank you! These guys that I get the opportunity to play with are just the best - they're always inspiring me and challenging me to take things to the next level, especially live...we just get crazy and do stuff we'd never do in rehearsal, but we'll let the moment take us away and really explore something. This song was nothing like this in rehearsal - it just went somewhere else live, and we loved it! SO much fun! Glad you enjoyed it. :D

  • what a fill what a groove...its the best video who i saw last years...keep groovin man...perfect job...

  • Thank you! :D

  • sick. love the dynamics at the end!

  • I play drum since 2 years ago. I love this instrument, I want to work in when I'll be an adult, and I play metal music. But, this solo, is probably the best thing I've ever heard. I love the way he grooves on drums, and all the subtleties, nuances... I love this, I watched this 10 times in 2 hours. I LOVE THAT :D

  • Thank you for the great comment! I went watched some of your videos, man, and you're a darn good player yourself! Keep up the good work, brother! :D

  • @drumology2001 Oh thank's you so much guy :)

  • The groove man just made me want to drum for years straight!

  • Cool, man! :D

  • Excellent solo! Love the dynamics and nuance. The ending build-up is brilliant, then returning to the low-key slow funk really makes it. Reminded me of some Cobham/Mahavishnu stuff!

  • Righteous! I'll take that comparison all day long (though I'm certainly not worthy of it)! :D

  • nooooooooooo im not abusing you! sorry i was just stating how 'FAT' your grove is, i aspier to drum like you hahaha you're amazing

  • I thought that was the case - which is why I laughed when EyeHawk777 below said you were "sooooo jealous", lol! I appreciate the kind words, my friend; I just wanted to be playful and poke you in the ribs a little bit. ;)

  • have you ever gone back and watched this solo and at 4:55 been like what the fuck im a freak?

  • You know, your last two comments have slightly confused me: are they insults? It's hard to tell if you like the video or if you're just trashing me.

  • soooooooooo FAT!

  • @COdrums4life

    sooooo jelous...

  • *Bluchuoo* that's the sound of my mind exploding into a million pieces. that was amazing. I thought i was getting a little good. But now i might just have to quit. haha good job man that was one of the best videos Ive seen on funk drumming

  • HAHA! Great comment - thank you! That made my day! VERY funny. :D

Do me a favor, though: please don't quit playing! I'd hate to be responsible for a fellow drummer giving up on the art; that's a lot of guilt to carry right there. Keep on keepin' on, my friend. ;)

  • this is the most nast, desgusting beat ive ever heard. ur chops r crazy, ima grow up to be like derek munson

  • Great stuff! I like it!

  • Thanks! :)

  • can i ask you a question?, how did you practise to become so fast around the set and yet so clear with your dynamics at the same times? its simply amazing

  • Again, answered you on the "Jazz Drum Solo" video... ;)

  • The drum solo was amazing, but the organ solo. Jesus. Instead of making it complicated and etc, he uses the spaces really well, keeping the audience on edge.. and he's got AMAZING dynamics....

  • damn!!!!!!!!! bro like i said U GOT SOME CHOPS MAN good work brotha keep it up man ........PROPS

  • man, this goes down smooth...

  • my word, the solo is just plain crazy! how do you only get 2.7k views for a song like that ?????

    ):

  • It's not popular Top 40 radio-friendly music, so.... ;)

Honestly, I come at it from the other direction: I'm thrilled that 2,700+ people would take the time out of their day to watch anything I've done. :D

  • i was wondering on your bass drum pedal do you play with your heel up or down

  • It's a combination of the two. For example, during the beginning of the song, it's all heels down. I only go heels up when I need a fast flurry of notes or something.

  • 3:13... sick

  • I'm serious, there was tears in my eyes when I first saw this vid. It must shown to every kid who wants to play drums to see how much fun can it be.

  • Wow - really? That's freakin' crazy! Didn't mean to make you cry. ;)

I'm glad you liked it so much. I give it a listen every once in a while when I get a comment on it that needs a response, and even 3 months after the fact, I still get a kick out of how that all turned out. :D

  • That was awesome derek!! Some of the best playing I've seen in a while. Very musical.

  • Fantastic. Like the tripletised paraparadiddle groove thing between snare and hats........if that what it is!

  • holy fuck. just, wow.

  • 0:57 was so fucking beastly, amazing I shat myself when i saw that

  • Really? What did I do at the :57 mark? Seemed pretty tame to me... =]

  • @drumology2001 About 2 seconds after it on the :59 or 1:00 mark, that awesome shuffle

  • Okay, I gotcha now! That little hi-hat/cross-stick thing. Cool - glad you dug it, bro. :D

  • @drumology2001 :P Thought it was awesome, out of nowhere too xD

  • Hard to believe that you are from a small community not near anything. The level at which you and your fellow musicians are playing seems way beyond small town USA stuff. I am struck not only by your own playing but by your co-horts' as well. Is that town full of incredible musicians or what? (I don't mean to make all of my comments public, drawing your comments out in public to my every....is there an e-mail I can communicate with you on?

  • Once again, way too kind. ;)

My pals in this trio *are* extremely talented, and I'd say they're tops in their fields. We've been playing together for about 4 years now, and we have an 8 year spread in age (Juan's 21, Frazer's 24, I'm 29), but musically we all grew up listening to Top 40 radio until we discovered jazz in our teenage years. From there, it's just been lots of study and practice and jamming. :)

My e-mail address is on my website (see video description). Talk to you soon! :D

  • Nice ghosting..........this just goes to show how much one can get out of playing around the beat and permutating patterns. Your triplet work is as good as it gets. Your playing inspires me to be more creative with what I know. Thanks for the vid.

  • Wow - thanks for the great comment and compliments! I'm glad you enjoyed the video and it inspired you in some way. That's so cool to hear, man. :D

  • hippest drum solo out!!!!

  • A'thank you! ;)

  • 5 10-5 15 ("

  • hay Derek, I never going to stop playing, we are addicted in nice way. A good clockwork never stops running, and we are the clockwork off each band. haha mike

  • hay Derek, nice drumming style, keep going! I'm allso a drummer, my favorite style is jazz and funk and latin. Nice to see what hard work can do. Keep on grovin Derek!!!

lot off greetz from the Netherlands. Mike

  • Thanks for the great comment, Mike! I will keep doin' what I'm doin', my friend - never going to stop! ;)

  • The beginning reminds me the sound of Jack DeJonette and Lenny White on Miles Davis' Bitches Brew. What is the model of your hats? they are so groovy.

  • DO you mean the 7 second bumper in the very beginning? Or the beginning of the clip? Or the beginning of the drum solo? Which beginning are we talking about? ;)

The hi-hats I use are from the Custom Series from Soultone Cymbals; they're a medium weight 14" model, brilliant finish, personalized with my name/logo.

  • @drumology2001 I meant between 0:20 and 1:40, it saounds a bit like Pharao's Dannce... I think... And those cymbals are definitly worth trying them. Regards from cloudy-yet-warm Mexico!

  • that's some really tasty drumming right there! very inspiring!

hope to see you on mikeslessons again soon :)

    cheers julien

  • Excelent!!. Very inspiring.

  • Perfect, perfect touch. So... nice...

  • man, i really love the feel!!

  • you are such a groovin cat. time displacement out of this world, chops, pocket, linear, gospel, you name it.

  • Thank you! Glad you liked it, Desine. :D

  • Wicked Dez!

  • Great performance! Truly entertaining to watch as a drummer myself, love the ghostys! Best drum technique of all time I think.

  • Thanks, Adam! You're right, man: what would music sound like if drummers didn't use ghost notes? Makes me shudder just thinking about it... ;)

  • @drumology2001 It would be a terrible thing! Would sound like a robot thank god for drumming dynamics!

  • could you do a video of how you play the beginning "Derek Munson" intro? lol

  • HA! Yeah, I probably could! That's a excerpt from a drum solo I did on a CD called "Breakthrough" by the CBC Jazz Ensemble. There's a few things I could show you from that little 8 second bumper clip, sure! :)

  • you were right, i really really really...REALLY...reallyyyy dig it :D keep them coming :) just awesome again, you never disappoint :D

  • hey derek! this is probably the first time i've seen you hit this hard. lol! this was awesome, the off time feel, the play on dynamics and those sweet ghost notes, looks like you had a lot of fun :D. props to the bassist... and frazier sounds sick

  • Hey man! Long time no talk! Glad you dug the video - you're right, we had a blast that night. (We have a blast *every* night we play together. Every day, too. We just generally have a blast at all times of the day.) ;)

And YES: Juan and Frazer are SICK players, man! I couldn't imagine two other guys I'd rather be on stage with. It's a bummer that I couldn't fit Juan's bass solo that intro'd into the song, because your jaw would have hit the floor. He's out of control! :D

  • hhah derek my man... You are like a machine! :) those "delay" effects you did were like Woooow man :)... and the solo is abstract man :D awesome job.. perfect as always... you're not on mikeslessons anymore? hope to hear from you soon.. enjoy..

    Dimitrij

  • "D" is for Dimitrij! My man! Thanks for the love, bro. :D

Yeah: sadly, I had to step away from "the family" for financial reasons (read: my wife didn't see the sense in spending $20 a month on it). I get where she's coming from, but I definitely miss everybody, and I know I'm missing out on tons of inside jokes and adorable Mike/Amber back-and-forth that happens in the live lessons! Mike's got a great thing going on there - drummers worldwide don't know how lucky they are to have him. :)

  • this is really excellent man! great use of dynamics and chops, how do you go about doing that off time stuff, you should post a mini lesson on it pleasee haha it always boggles my mind..are you influenced by the drummer martin valihora at all..hes one of my favorites

  • Thank you for the props! Doing the off time stuff is fairly easy if you know a few particular things...I *should* do a mini-lesson on that! That's a fun one to teach. :)

I've heard OF Martin Valihora, but I've haven't *heard* him at all, so I guess that answers that part of your question. Looks like I need to do some homework now, eh? ;)

  • Damn... that is just sick

  • I really like the sounds of your toms :D

  • They sounded better out front - not so great here. But I'm glad you like them. :)

  • Hella sick

  • Great "off time" feel, amazing drumming..

  • Thank you! It's not often that I get to take musical chances like that, so I'm glad it worked for you. :D

  • 1:49 made my heart melt<3

  • Awesome! I've been working on getting more triplet-based stuff in my vocabulary - glad to hear you're digging it, Forrest! :D

  • Woah Derek! New video! Nice job, man! This is your birthday gift to us, right? :D

  • Yeah, that's backwards, Ian! Just kidding! Like my videos are a gift...HA! Get right out of town, man. :D
