I agree - live / hot wire - off first (I'd insulation tape it too i.e. treat as still hot / live)

Always use wire strippers - never be tempted to bite the insulation off the wire with your teeth

Too bad you took the wrong wire off first, hot is always the first one disconnected and last one connected. Also made it very difficult to install, should have done visually mocked height prior to install then fully assemble at ground level, install bracket then secure canopy. Lastly never, have rings or jewelry on hands as they conduct electricity. You can never be certain power is off, treat always treat wiring as hot. And finally too distracting looks wise.
