If you haven't heard this LP, you might give it a try.."Count Basie Swings and Joe Williams Sings". I may have swapped reversed the title. It's terrific!
Pat Hession and Lin should get together, have some kind of DandD party and discuss lead player styles. See which one of them can become more offensive and tasteless.
So the style is playing inconsistent, not cutting off with the rest of the trumpet section, playing out of tune, retarded vibrato, doing 4th or 5th lip trills when the rest of the band isn't wider than a second, and the almighty lead player style of going for , and missing said high note at the end of the tune.
The other thing to consider is the venue and acoustics. When this was recorded I doubt that speaker systems were as sophistocated. If the musicians could not hear each other well because of the acoustics that could impact how loud they play.
Nothing is ever the listener's fault. It's the listeners that sign our checks, in the end, not other musicians. If the overwhelming majority of people don't like it, there's something wrong with it. It doesn't matter if it's theatrically or stylistically correct if the audience doesn't care for it. Music, especially Jazz, is for the everyman, not the elitist. (Not saying you're elitist, I fully and 100% respect you and you're opinion, I just like a good clean debate.) :)
I met the Count in Gloversville New York after a concert in a High school auditorium. I got to shake his hand...I'll never forget it. It was the softest hand I've ever shook to this day. I was in awe.
A few years ago, two parents went out for dinner. A few hours later, the babysitter was calling to ask if she could cover up the clown statue in the kids' room, the father said,"Take the kids and get out of the house. We'll call the police, we don't have a clown statue." The "clown statue" is really a killer that escaped from jail. If you don't post this letter on to 10 videos tonight, the clown will be in your bed at 3:00 am with a chainsaw in his hand ......., x
Hey, man. Thanks for the note. I taped this off the air when it first broadcast on PBS, I believe... It was part of a big band special. Anyhow, good to hear from you -- how was that sandwich?...

Even if he's out of line, Enlitened does have a point. Basie did fire Lin for taking two many liberties.

Just listened again, Lin Biviano sounds terrible. Unnecessary trills shakes and spills, and a Parkinson style vibrato is utterly retarded.
enlitened1234 2 years ago
What? Lin sounds great. Have you listened to other recordings of this song? It's the style.

I wouldn't... this stuff is wayyyy too lead heavy.

No such thing on this tune, man.

Uh, yeah there is- when you can't hear any of the harmonies.
Burgerbob22 3 years ago
Its blues dude. Its supposed to be heavy...
General9313 2 years ago
Just on lead? Usually, I would like it, but he's the only trumpet you can hear for most of this. It's about the section, not the player.
Burgerbob22 2 years ago 2
I know what your saying now. I took it wrong. My bad.
General9313 2 years ago
No problem, at least you get it!
Thanks.

MsKelleys 2 years ago
That's the listeners fault. If you can't hear the harmony, it has nothing to do with Lin.
Saxyman14 2 years ago
Totally. If someone is blowing over the rest of the trumpets, it's my fault that they aren't clear as day. Why isn't this topic resolved?
Burgerbob22 2 years ago
