@beertjeslisser I could be wrong, but it seems that the rings represent love and at least some degree of loyalty. The theme seems to be that sex has consequences when these things are discarded. Thankfully, most illicit unions don't result in hack-surgeries. But I think the physical losses represent emotional losses--namely, our ability to "feel" (which the hands and heart are often associated). One could also argue that meaningless relationships are emotionally disabling...or devestating.
