  • He's blue-eyed!!!

  • I don't think The Cure should have a label actually, because their music has parts of almost every genre in the book.

  • always found uplifting, but later self titled alb has 1 of the bleakest songs i ever heard. younger depressing & older dep seem different. 'it was a year ago today' song is dangerous

  • they have a couple depressing sounding albums (like faith and pornography, and disintegration to an extent) and then have albums like kiss me kiss me kiss me, Wish, and their self title which are really up beat with. And I love it all, they have a song for every day of the week (even Friday)

  • WHAT THEY ARE IS THE CURE THE BEST BAND ON THE ENTIRE PLANET THAT IS IT NOTHING MORE THE ONLY LABLE THEY ASK TO BE GIVEN IS THEIR BAND NAME THATS IT SO STOP THEIR IS A SIDE OF THE CURE A MUSIC FROM THE CURE FOR EVERYONE I BELIEVE SO PEOPLE SHOULD PAY LESS ATTENTION TO LABLES AND MORE TO THEIR MUSIC AND THEY SHALL SEE EXACTLY WHAT THEY ARE NOT THEY ARE A QUITE VARIED BAND SEEMINGLY IN ALL ASPECTS OF LIFE THERE ARE DIFFERENT SIDES A LIGHT AND A DARK TO ALL !

  • simply irresistible!! I loved the part where robert is sitting next to santa XD

  • BTW ..... thank you for the great picture collection u put together was great to see and what a great smile he had sure makes me smile :) the cure rocks......

  • Whatever his label he is amazingly talented love him and the band .I think he was a happy person in general but had demons inside of him to fight like we all do with our life experiences and his songs often reflected from those deep feelings of life , so emotional deep thinking or for fun tunes . He is overall very creative with his videos tunes and words. The guitar and even down to his looks which i loved ..He impacted various kinds of people from all walks of life goth included :)

  • He is very Friendly but very fragile!

  • Pfft... The Cure were best when they were "doom and gloom". They played with real passion, and their songs had so much meaning. The only reason why Robert changed his image, was because he didn't want to be labeled as something else. But in reality, the darkness, and hopelessness was who he was.

  • i love the cure... and im goth. and whoever said goths arent fun? we laugh too you know..

  • I love this little tribute here!! I believe The Cure is a mixture of all moods! That is what is so wonderful about this band!! There really is a song for every mood that you are in!! The Cure are pure perfectiion and brilliance!! Goth? No, pure magic for the soul? Yes!! The Cure forever and always!! :) ♥

  • goth doesnr mean depressed lol. its the individuality of the person.

  • I love these pictures! <33

Don't you think he is just so adorable when he smiles??? I know I do :]]

  • OMFGGGGGGGGGG!♥

  • not fucking goth there indie

  • @1guitarkid Um mate check again, they are post punk.

And they fit in with the goth label, like siouxsie and the banshees and joy division.

  • @1guitarkid they're*

Remember kids, grammar is your friend! Also, indie isn't really a genre. That's just what those darned hipsters want you to think.

  • Why can't i suck you?

  • Haha he wore skinny jeans. Well.... Idk what you would call them back then. Jeans?

  • My buddies and I always looked at it as "new wave"...seemed to stick

  • @clintxoxox I personally see it as a blend of punk, post-punk, gothic, pop, new wave, and alternative rock.:)

  • @Jakegothicsnake tbh mate you've more or less just described the cure in general XD

  • @BloodThirstyGoth69 Oh, sorry.

  • @Jakegothicsnake why apoliize? o.0

  • @BloodThirstyGoth69 'Cause I thought you guys felt that I made a "stating the obvious" comment.....

  • @Jakegothicsnake naah no one did well...i didnt anyway XD i found it funny :P :)

  • @BloodThirstyGoth69 Thanks. ^_^

  • where did u find all these pictures of him??? i love em!

  • @pocasha His music is -post-punk or darkwave. This goth labeling is a joke.

  • @oramikleepunk no, some of their albums are goth, not all. and darkwave is electronic. Like diary of dreams.

  • @bum1143 We never called that Goth label in the UK in the 80's Bum1143.It was called darkwave, post punk,or the batcave bands.

  • You're irresistible!!!

  • This song (why can't I be you) is an upbeat and happy sounding song but it's just the style of music. The lyrics still make it sound like a dark song to me. I noticed that about the Smiths too. Everyone (press at the time) said they and Morrissey were so depressing but in fact most of the music is very happy music - and the lyrics more 'dark psychological poetry' than depressing. A brilliant balance for me is one of the best songs made by anybody, anywhere, ever: The Cure - Just Like Heaven.

  • Ps. Not saying i have anything against Twilight fans or emo kids lol just wanted to put that out there I mean no offense ^^ both are just not my thing.

  • yeah goth stereotypes are funny cause not all think gloom and doom but If you look at how the word is thrown around you get emo kids and twilight fans now so i guess i would hate being called goth now LMAO which just isnt cool...there is nothing like oldschool goth lol, but I don't consider Robert Smith or The Cure Goth at all more like Jazzy altern synth but its true what pocasha said in earlier comments they did have a huge impact on the goth scene but the goth scene.

  • but i like the video anyway, thanks! ;3

  • i thought this was gonna be an interview of him saying what he thinks about the goth label. disapointed, i already knew he was happy people! xD

  • heyy im caitlin im 12 and i just want to let u no robert is def not goth hes also a bright happy person always jumping around lol :P

  • @caitdemo why you gotta tell us your name n how old you are...o.O

  • in the forest video robert looks like ben afleck he he

  • Cure is cure genre is meaning less these days It was a way of trying to sort music!

  • i dont think robert is goth they labeld him goth when he was going threw a bad time and his music when with his mood

but they are a very happy band and allways have been they just look different

    thecure4ever!!

  • GOths is only pornography!!

faith and 17 seconds are post-punk

  • This is nice. A lot of people are under the illusion that the Cure are always miserable. This proves that they are not at all. I really like them!

  • i love u robert i hope people understand hes not goth hes a happy person how can u not love him

  • goth in general are not all gloom and doom.... stereotypes are funny....

  • @7snotface

    Goths are funny too.

  • @7snotface agreed.

  • @7snotface Well the music is, but that doesn't mean goths are

  • @caitdemo

Are you implying that goths are not happy people? I'm not being an asshole, I'm just wondering.

  • 1:33, dunno why but reminds me of chris crocker... but i love robert so much

  • i love you mate

    these pictures are fuckin cool

    love each & every member

it's not just Simon & Robert

butdamn i'd love to get my hands on their outfits!

  • I want his jacket on 0:54 :D

  • Comment removed

  • he's just himself. Just Robbie

  • He's not goth at all..he just like the the makeup...

  • He definitely is in the Goth genre like songs like "Funeral Party" and his look, he just doesn't like labels because he likes the freedom to be creative and experiment musically. Goth bands Bauhaus and Sister of Mercy, etc. don't really like the Goth label either or any label because they also like the freedom to be creative and experiment musically as well.

  • I agree, his band does fall under the Goth genre. Goths aren't mopey all the time, they just express themselves through depressing music.

  • a Wayne Hussey`s copy

  • AT 0:10 ROBERT IS SOOOOO BEUTIFUL...

  • what song was playing before WMG started bitching?

  • If you meant the song at the beggining, it's ''Why Can't I Be You''

  • I personally never saw The Cure as a "doom & gloom" band primarily. There's always been a very playful side to them. =)

  • This has got to be the BEST collection of Robert Smith photos that I can find. Well done :)

  • Simply GORGEOUS!!!! :)

  • LOL, stupid comment

  • were did you get these pics my cousin would so love these please tell

  • does robert smoke???

  • I think he did at one time

  • Yes, the idiot. Not that he's the only singer to do so, of course. I believe I read that he'd quit in 94, but then there was a mention of him w/ a ciggie in 2002 (argh!), so I can only hope he's off the voice-killer coffin sticks for good by now.

  • no more audio :-(

  • lol 1:10 santa! where did you get these pis?

  • I never realy saw there music as doom and gloom iI always found it uplifting.

  • 1:11 hahahahahaha

  • I Love ROBERT!!!!!!!:)))

  • i don't even understand where the goth label came from! these people clearly never listened to the cure.

  • Goths were the group of people who used to hang around and listen to a band called Sex Gang Children. The lead singer Andi was nicknamed Count Visigoth because Ian Astbury and Daniel Ash visited him a few times at his house and one time he was dressed as a geisha in a large room filled with televisions in the dark, watching all of them. They thought it a bit strange and so they nicknamed him and all his fans "Goths". Which they actually took a shine to, and didn't care that it was an insult.

  • lol, i'm impressed with your knowledge of goth etemology but that isn't what i meant! I mean like, i dont get why people decided to apply the goth label to the cure!

probably to do with all the early songs about

    gloom....

even so, argh!! the cure are just not goth! not at all!

  • The Cure, have released many songs and one album that could be considered, "goth", but as a whole i'd say that they are completely genreless, simply because they have gone through multiple line-up changes and robert's mood fluxuates so much. I am a huge fan of there earlier work, but if your going to review them you'll realise that you can't pinpoint them to one genre, though i am a fan of there darker works eg. Pornography and Faith albums. /rant

  • Yeah, they were a Post-Punk band early on and if you see their really early videos like "A Forest" they didn't have the whole "goth" look yet. The whole "goth" idea must have been from their three albums "Seventeen Seconds", "Faith" and of course "Pornography"

  • ya, and it also had to do with how they dressed, especially robert. it really is lame how people still label them goth. i still love 'em anyways :)

  • forever the cure until death do as apart:]

  • i think i just fell in love with Robert! :D

  • Of course :)

  • it makes you wonder if Robert wrote this song to himself... :)

  • Brilliant and very innovative guitarist.

One of the best for sure. real veteran!

  • With or without his makeup and wild hairdo, Robert Smith is adorable and always will be!

  • haha thanks im not the only one that respects simon too! but you cant help but love robert...

  • Of course you're not! :)

There're plenty of people that respect him (and he looks great too, heh), Porl, too.

Robert is just so lovable. haha.

  • He was gorgeous, and STILL is. :]

    Simon, too. <3

The Cure is just so awesome.

  • 0:58 = <3

  • me too

  • We wear he same thing lol.

    Messy hair,smeared lipstick,a lil eyeliner,haha.

    They're post-punk btw.

  • totally depends on which album, because pornography, nomatter how much he would dislike the label, is almost the epitomy of gothic rock, and there are a couple of albums which are usually named artrock/artpop. the cure has had so many releases you can't classify the entire band as playing one genre.

  • thats wot my hair looks like!

  • He used to be so hott i still like him he and his band are the best!!! <3

  • lol rob with santa lol

  • he was FIT

  • he was sooooo hot when he was first singing.

  • still is

  • seriously smith has the nicest hair.

  • i like it

  • now wot u mean cos if u wear blck dont truly help with the image cos its a case pof being ur self.

even if robet is/not goth the band had a huge impact on the goth subculter

listen to "CLAN OF XYMOX" as an example

as for hating the label think he has got the wrong person as it was not robert but the lead singer of "sisers of mercy" who even sed him self about being called the demon overlord if he wore black socks

  • The real meaning of the word ´´Goth´´ is not what many people think it is.What goth really means is:a Germanic barbarian tribe.

So now you know what goth means.

  • mwah

  • Who cares about The Cure being Goth or not, just because most if not all Goth's love The Cure doesnt make them Gothic...

Also, Robert Smith doesnt hate the Goth label, and he could be a Goth himself for his taste of style and the color black, i honestly wouldnt care...

People just dont seem to understand that being for example a "Goth" while being in a band doesnt make the band a "Goth" band (and the other way around).

If you love it, then fine, but dont label bands or persons...

  • i like the picture at 6:04.

  • every one should know that the cure is alternative, not gothic.

  • the cure was post-punk from the very beginning, never gothic, the fact that gothics listen to it doesn't makes them goth, goth is more like the alien sex fiend or lacrimosa

  • ah man the pictures of Robert Smith with short hair are so narly, I can imagine what like, a buzzcut would look like on him when I look at the beginning of the hair, but to actually see it is awesome.

  • Don't bite the hands that fed/feed you BOB. Or what, you think mainstream media was/is responsible for making your group from a british phenomenon to an international entity? No, it was the goth community primarily who accepted your music and bought all your records. How can you hate the "goth" label if you were one of the ones who practically created it? Just cause you don't want to be "boxed" into a certain category doesn't mean you need to bash it. Be appreciative and thankful. REMEMBER....

  • yahh... me 2!!..

  • i wish i was a teen in the 80's

  • hahaha they are soo not gothic :D they rock man

  • Why is this called "Robert hates the 'goth' label?" It's just a series of Cure pics and their music. I don't understand the title of the heading?

  • the 1st pic which appeared on this video...is that robert smith without the makeup? he looks like when he was in his younger days!!!

  • it appears he has some make-up on, at least lipstick......the eye make-up isn't very heavy though.

  • what black shoes are those at 5:09???

The real Cure fans know that he don't hate that. >:'l
  • There "Dark" but not really gothic.

  • Yeah, Martin did for a while, even Dave Gahan in early 81 did too, check out the crocs interview, but what about Siouxsie and The Banshees? forgot them... and Gary Numan and Japan

  • nah i think he hates it how when people look at the band they instantly think goth and emo. THE CURE ROCKS!!!

  • last comment for paulbuss

  • Case in point, Robert Smith does look gothy new-wave, but if you ever see interviews, he never wears makeup, and listen to Depeche Mode, and then tell me, how come they are never labelled gothic, though if you want to see Dave Gahan in a similar look to Robert, look up (new life rare)

  • I have always thought of DM as kind of Gothic sure I mean Martin Gore even had a 'goth' look for a bit.

  • I agree...I saw them in concert last week and were incredible.

  • is robert smith married?

  • yes, he is.

  • unfortunately...both he and his wife would make a great catch ;P

  • oh robert, everything you do is simply kissable..

  • my girlfriend is goth and proud of it (and super-cute) ^^

  • no one has the right to call the cure "gothic" seriously, have u heard the song lovecats and caterpillar yeah sure maybe they have a few dark songs, but im sure that they were going through depressing times.

  • there is nothing wrong with being "gothic" and maybe u should read the lyrics dipshit

  • listen ass, im not saying that theres anything wrong with the gothic label, i'm saying that the cure isn't gothic. because there are a lot of songs that don't really fit the gothic label. so shutup and u don't need to be so rude.

  • exactly. you can't just shove the cure into a category like gothic when their sound has been all over the place throughout the years, from darkwave to pop to jazz.

  • yeah. thanks for agreeing with me.

  • i didn't say they were goth.

and yes they are a wonderful band that has been all over the musical map touching on a million different genres, but that doesn't mean they do not have any gothic tendencies. A lot of their songs are of a gothic nature, very artsy, deep thought, etc. And Robert Smith himself, his style is very gothic, for example the big hair, the dark eye make-up, bright red lips.

  • yes i know, that was my point.

  • actually you made it quite clear that no one had the right to consider them "gothic" and i quote:

"no one has the right to call the cure "gothic" seriously..."

  • no i didn't! you're so confusing! i said that their MUSIC isn't gothic, i never said anything about their appearence. you don't get it!

  • I REPEAT... The Cure.. DOES NOT HAVE a "label"

    The Cure is "The Cure"!!!!!

...I wanna be the wife too, yoyoeliza.. lol!

    Robert Smith <333

  • I wanna be the wife >;[

i know Lovecatse off by heart BUT I HATE IT

    he hates it aswell :D

  • I like how Robert wont except "the Goth label" when the image of The Cure is clearly inspired in the imaginations of people that think of goth ie heavy eye make up,black clothing, wild hair and such...Hell Peter Murphy embraces it I wish more pepole like Robert would too.

  • i dont think he hates the goth label itself, he hates it that people still insist on pinning that onto the cure when they are so much more than that. by saying they are simply Goth is limiting all that they have done musically

  • I get that,The Cure have just as many 'happy songs' as sad songs but I got into Goth music because of the Cure and I have always put them in the Goth realm with DeadcanDance,Bauhaus,Sisters of Mercy,Nick Cave,Joy Division,The Smiths even though these bands play a wealth of material that might not be dark or gloomy they still have that stigma.

  • I agree here. The Cure are an amazing band in all respects and shouldn't just be limited to being called goth, but at the same time, they serve as a gateway to a lot of goth bands for many, many people.

  • Agreed. Speaking of Peter Murphy, I'm seeing him tomorrow night ^.^

  • LUCKY! I love Peter Murphy...Im still kicking myself over missing Bauhaus in '05.

  • The cure is supposed to be a cure. They're not

    goth cause they a cure.

  • Why is the word FAG thrown around so much...BULL SHIT to me as a pround cool GAY MAN leomar 28

  • The wife's name is Mary Poole, they got married on August 13 of 1988...He wrote lovesong as a wedding gift!

  • tHe woman in 4:36 is his wife?

  • Yes, her name is Mary Poole.

  • it is in the way that is music and well music is a way of expressing emotion and the cure is good at it...

nothing to do with attempted emotional hardcore punk tight shirted people

  • Well said

  • omg no... Cure haven't anything to do with emo stuff -.-

  • Yeah man, ppl used to talk a lot of shit of great bands, probably because they're trying so hard to label one band into one genre

  • They must be RETARDED , like U! This one u have to believe it.

The Cure is in the same position as Beatles and Rolling Stones. great bands ever.

  • Can i get the song name plz? Starting to get into the cure after i heard a few songs and they are amazing

  • the first song is why can't i be you? and the second is hot, hot, hot!! both from the kiss me, kiss me, kiss me album

  • thanks man

  • u must first learn that the cure doesnt has like a sound

    it has changed MANY times

so dont expect everything to be like disintrgration or like seventeen secodns be open minded

what remains constant is the beautyful miningful lyrics

  • First song is 'Why Can't I Be You?', second is 'Hot Hot Hot!!!'

  • his wife looks like maria callas!!(it's a compliment!)

  • Fabulous Compilation. How nice of you to add pictures of him and his wife.

  • The only thing i can label him and The Cure as is BRILLIANT.

  • i dont care what they're are labled as THEY ARE THE FUCKING BEST!!!

  • People who call The Cure goth have obviously never seen Robert dance. It's the cutest, the way he flails his arms around, poses coquettishly and sort of writhes about like a kid. But I bet people would just cover they're eyes, point at him and go "NO! GOTH!", cause they're so darn stubborn, all of them...

    Check this out:

    watch?v=8VyMPIYrgXA

  • You cannot state that such actions are not Goth much as you cannot say they are Goth. There are quite a few misconceptions about Goth. Read Voltaire's What Is Goth? book for more information about the subculture. The Cure isn't Goth, and they never have been. However, they impacted an entire generation of people. Robert Smith dressed a part, much like Siouxsie Sioux, Peter Murphy, or Rozz Williams. This is where the concept of their "Goth-hood" has come from. Simple misunderstandings.

  • and by the way the real deal innovators were JOY DIVISION, siuouxsie sue and mr smith were still writing hate songs about arabs when JOY DIVISION had already achieved something more profound

  • I'm sure Joy Division's sound was innovative and inspired bands like The Cure. The Cure was probably one of the bands that brought that new sound to full bloom. They span many genres though, so their sound is varied. Anyway, I don't see how what you're saying is a put-down. Artists are always inspired by each other, and The Cure, who are still alive and kicking, have certainly achieved many, many great things that are inspiring people to this day. Ain't that profound?

  • Just for the record, "Killing an arab" is not a hate song. Have you read the lyrics? The title is taken from a passage in the book The Stranger by Albert Camus, where the main character thinks about the emptiness of life after killing a man, who I believe happens to be an arab, on a beach. It's about existentialism.

  • For your information 'Killing an Arab' is based on a novel by Albert Camus, and it is not violent nor does it express hate.

Please express your opionion differently :)

    Roberts my hero!
