I love lots of guitar playing and music styles. But Johnny Winter was just always a readily available, talented musician. I've read many interviews with many guitarists, and just about all of them give an honorable mention to Johnny.Though I've not met him, he seems like a good old common neighbor-just always there for us. Thanks for this great post!
I broke my "replay" button... Johnny is a true king of the blues. The pure raw energy. Similar in feel to Rory Gallagher, could only imagine if the two had have played together.
I saw the 'Johnny Winter Blues Band' play back on the
7th Oct '91 (The Return of The Illustrated Man Tour) at the Town&Country2 club, Highbury Corner, Islington, London (Now known as the Garage) and with Special Guests
'Omar and The Howlers'. Both bands blew my socks off. What a night!
Omar plays the Austin scene quit a bit. I saw him twice at Antones. He was fantastic, a great performer. It kills me how you can go into small clubs and see such great talent and then turn on the TV and see no brain bimbos like Brit. Spears making millions.
Yeah - happy 65th to Johnny today 2-23-09! His ''91 CD Let Me In smoked! And '92's Hey, Where's your brother? was his last powerful studio CD. On ''04's I'm a bluesman he's just a shadow of his old self. But glad he's still alive and playing!
The Firebird sound is way cool, but manoman can he burn it up on a Laser! Hell, Johnny could play a ciger box with rubber bands across it and make it sing! The boy's got the magic touch!
Yer right.. its an Erlewine Lazer. Johnny said it was the only guitar that had both, the Fender Srat attack and Gibson round long sustain sound. He uses his Gibson Firebird mainly for slide work.
What Tone! The Lazer sounds great. Saw him at the Coach House in SJC in 92, Straight into the PA with dual Musicmans. Unending licks that hardly repeat. Johnny Winter has always been the "Real Deal".
I'm with you on this, it should be 5 stars! Maybe someone can figure out how to 'PhotoShop' that 5th star red...and speed up the inevitable! Those 4 stars are Humbugging me, too! For the sake of a time line, today is Thanksgiving!
HI had to change my dam name for google or some such shit, now transfer everything.. Do so hope that GDavis sees this.. I'm Lilylyn no more.. pissed.. but god, this was a great version and what a great video Davis did of it... 3 cheers to you!!!! And for waking up all the small fry listeners to current music that I played with my little triangle in 2nd grade.. Lynn M. Kane
Oh yea, saw him live in 1985 in a small club and sat a few yards from him - he absolutely blew me away. I see a lot of posts about shredders - I don't see any comparison. Shredders use the power of the amp only with a little fast finger motion. Real players like Johnny use both the power of the amp combined with their passion as evidenced by their tone - there is no comparison between such tone and the noise that feedback speed freaks make.
I know Johnny is on the rebound, but it's too bad people who are seeing him that never saw him before are only seeing a shadow of his former self......a live J.W. concert is an unbelievable rockin' stompin' event! He is the all time ultimate rocker that plays licks in a span of 4 beats I've never heard any modern shredder pull off....it's all about timing, and J.W. was the absolute master of that!
I do believe this time in Johnny's life was his best!....so much better sounding with Tom Compton on drums.....Jeff rocks on bass, but I prefer Jon Paris!....nobody ever did it quite like J.W. ....great stuff.....thanx!
Totally agree with you 'the riffer' except that his guitar was ringing better in the early 80s abd before. I prefer the he had when he played only with the firebird ...
saw em', it was alright, but nothing to go goo goo about, checked out your page, notice ya got Taj Mahal, he was the rudest son of a bitch I ever met, he stepped onmyhand and then leaned over and told me to 'move it'! ha! what a gentleman, I served refreshments at a clubv in Santa Cruz for 7 years and he was the biggest creep I ever met there,, Now , as for Johnny, polite, and very humble in his coming and going off the stage.
The BEST!!! none better. See him evertime he's in town. Little known fact if u wait at his bus he will sign ANYTHING! Someone will come out of the bus take a few things then return them a little while later signed. He is awesome THANX JW & Meanguitaist for posting this gem if there are any more please post THANX again!!
Fantastic! I saw him this last summer at Konocti Calif., I was alittle concerned when he was led out and sat down(hip surgery?). But once he started jamming, all doubt was gone! His closing song was Highway 61,I tell ya when he strapped on his trusty firebird and got out his slide, chills all over my body! Long live JW!
We all have our favorites but for me Johnny's the greatest. I saw him in 1989, 1990, 1991, 1997, 2004 and this year. 1997 at the House of Blues in Hollywood was tough to watch as he was not in the best of health. 2004 was better and this year he was great. Although he had to sit down the entire show and he's not as fast or precise as before, once he started playing I had a smile on my face the entire show because I'm happy for him that he's doing so well, playing awesome and he's still around!
