I have such sentimental attachment to this song and video. The first time I viewed it was in Russia in 1997 in a restaurant on the local music tv channel while I dined on Russian salad. This song was extremely popular in Russia at that time. I love the way "the priests" (Nick Cave & Belixa Bargeld) drink their "sacred wine" from regular cups in what seems a dismissive and sacreligious manner! The "Black sack" waves are awesome! The dancing supreme! The lyrics profound! Totally inspried!

The accurate direction and a conscious effort to make it funny (by way of actors' animating, light-hearted movements) knowing very well that the setting and the song itself are very, very, very, and very dark. Look harder. If the actors were behaving any serious than they are, you would be scared of this song.

@bishtizer123 They were actually supposed to film this on a proper boat in Greece. Long story short, the captain wouldn't take them out, so they got drunk on the retsina that was supposed to go IN the boat & went home.

They filmed it this way instead... so yeah, tis kinda unintentionally low budget. Still awesome though! :)

Nick cave and the Bad seeds filled up the vacuum in the 80s and 90s where all the expendable music never lasted. So when a band was new, they were finished two years later. But you have to listen closely to what other bands and what Nick Cave has done. The bad seeds experimented with genres of all periods. That is why every album sounds different. Most bands stick with one formula and stay in that category. The seeds take two steps ahead based on the principal of reinventing genres.
