nicely done. i get tired of seeing videos on how to "start a fire" with a "firesteel" and the only thing they do is light a damn cottonball. nice to see someone actually make a fire.
i might have to see about getting a walking stick made of that stuff. have it a foot or two longer than normal, get some shavings off if i needed them. *thumbs up*
Good Video, I would like to tell you what I use to start my Fatwood fires, Fatwood is the only thing I use. You may think I am some kind of a nut but what I use is a Welders Flint Striker, what welders use to get the torch going, it works great and the best part about using it is you only need one hand and they are very cheap, under $4.00 plus a little extra for replacement flints, just an idea I though I would pass on, Thanks
Excellent 5 Stars! I like the fact that you used gloves while you whittle the wood. This is a good example of how to properly protective yourself when handling sharp knives
I have not tried that, but I don't think so. Fat wood is saturated with natural resin from a pine tree (AKA Pitch) which is very flammable. You need a wick to burn wax and I am not sure the wood would be a suitable wick. But give it a try, you might be on to something. If it works let us know so we can give it a whirl.
It is a UTG (Under the Gun) leg holster. It cost me about $15.00 off of E-Bay. I like it a lot. It is very good construction. I have used and abused it a lot and not a single wear issue.
I agree fatwood is an excellent tinder. It's also useful as a signal device, as the video shows.
One point of advice - when using firesteel or flint, keep your knife or striker stationary, and pull the flint/firesteel BACKWARDS. That way, you'll get the sparks and not risk crashing into your tinder pile.
Nice. Thanks for this demo. Where do you find the fatwood in Wal Mart?

@nextexhale In ours it is on a side wall by the large trash cans. There is also fire logs and chimney cleaners etc near the fat wood.

great Also if you don't have this stuff. Get some cotten wool and cover it with vasaline and you have a fire in seconds.
