I think I would be much better at telling which language sounded best if I unserstood all of them equally, or didn't understand them at all xD I feel so biased with my own language. All of the singers are very good though :3
I love all the nordic languages, mostly norweigan, swedish and danish because I understand them the most.... But finnish is really cool and icelandic is very beautiful :)
The swedish version is my favorite, the noweigan version comes next, after that danish and icelandic (can't diside) and last finnish... Finnish sounds really cool when spoken but i (personally) think that it doesn't fit for singing :) no hard feelings! :D<3
Finnish is very special, and i like that. A lot of we norwegians admire the swedish language. But norwegian is the most beautiful here, though. Probably cause i'm norwegian myself. I think every Nordic language is pretty in their own way!
Pocahontas is supposed to be young (the real Pocahontas was 11-12 years old by this time) so I would say a more younger voice would fit her! However, I think they all are beautiful :)
Has anyone noticed that on all these "Nordic Multilanguage" videos, everyone has a positive outlook on other people's languages. I just noticed that there were no fights, or name calling, instead there was praise for languages, and countries!
Maybe the sense of childish joy we have towards Disney makes us leave behind our cynical selves...
I know Finnish Pocahontas can sound pretty old for people who are not used to it but I grew up with it and I have to say: Arja's voice makes Pocahontas sound very wise and mature and I was suprised when I listened Swedish version; very beautiful voice but she was like some teen hippie teaching about nature..(no offence!)
I like all these nordic versions, maybe finnish and norwegian most. But I think Finnish had worst part, first 40secs doesn't sound so good in any version...:/
@greeenrain I agree with you! I also grew up with Finnish Pocahontas and for me she is the one and only Pocahontas :) Like you said - Swedish Pocahontas has a beautiful voice but it sounded like some teen hippie. But these Nordic multilanguage-videos are great! I liked very much Norwegian Pocahontas ;D
I think the Swedish version sounded far too young, and I grew up with the Finnish version and I love Arja. But the Norwegian Pocahontas was brilliant! fell in love with it :)
I think Norwegian is the best, but only because I feel it's more mature than the Swedish one. Either way Norwegian and Swedish were the best <3 No doubt.
i dont think that finnish singer is too old for pocahontas (: it's not like pocahontas is a kid or something, besides, arja has a lovely and powerful voice (:
I grew with finnish version and I love Arja's voice, it's very strong and pure, but maybe too old for Pocahontas. Out of this punch norvegian was definatly the best. Swedish was pretty, but sounded too young for me.
I think the swedish voice fits the character the best, and she´s also the best singer. I think that the swedish dubs are almost allways the best, exept for the hunchback of notre dame to esmeralda.
I don't like the Finnish part somehow :/ (I'm a Finn myself)
I think her voice is maybe too old. I like the Swedish a lot, but it's too young to be pocahontas o3o I like Norwegian and Icelandic the most~But Danish is also good! ^^
The Swedish voice somehow fits the best, the Norwegian version has the most skilled singer... but the Icelandic is my favourite since I grew up to that one :) Don't get me wrong, the Danish and Finnish versions aren't bad.
As for the lyrics, when it says "í otrum og í hegrum vinadýrð" I'm pretty sure it's "Í otrum og í hegrum vinaþing"
I was surprised how nice the Icelandic wersion was, and how weird the Finnish one was xD. I still think the Norwegian version is best, but the Swedish version is good too ^_^
Finnish probably only sounded strange due to the fact that it belongs to a completely different family of languages. All of the other Scandinavian languages are Germanic, although Finnish is Ugric, as is Estonian and Hungarian.
Norwegian version by far, the better singer and more harmony. flows alot better. doesn't come as a surprise tho, Norwegian language has a lot more word to describe things then the other languages has.
>_>' Ok... Alla var bra! XD
I´m from Finland and I think that the Swedish singer fits the most best to the role of Poukahountas :) She sounds young and lively. Great montage anyway :)
I love the nordic languages! Love to hear them, especialy because I'm from Denmark. I love the Icelandic and the Norwegian versions and of course I love the danish one ;)
I actually first saw this video a long time ago but with all these comments I just felt like I should add one of my own. C:
I don't come from any of the Nordic countries, but I really love how all of them sound! I'm completely in love with languages in general, and just listening to how things are pronounced--it sounds so difficult! xDD My tongue surely would trip over itself if I tried!
Anyway, I like the Swedish and Icelandic ones best because of how clear the singers sound.
I think the danish and Norwegian are a bit to operatic, the Finnish one is weird, why is Finnish even considered a Nordic language, it has nothing in common with the other languages. The icelandic language is just to hardly pronounced for this song. The Swedish version had the perfect balance on everything.
Well.. (I'm from Denmark so ofc.) I like the danish the most.. And that would probably be because i think the voice is a little deeper/darker than the others.. And Pocahontas don't really look like one who's 20, as the Swedish and Norwegian voices makes her sound like.. S:
I'm not sure. But isn't Icelandic, Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, English, German and Dutch the germanic languages? I think so. I love all of these languages. =D
the nordic languages are north germanic and the rest is west germanic =) but i know what you mean.... i'm german, i study english and i speak swedish ^^ jättebra!
nordic languages = icelandic, norwegian, swedish, danish and finnish
germanic languages are a real language group and finnish isn't one of them. "nordic" is just a term used of nordic countries. do not mix them with each other
Yeah Dutch people also can. reading shouldn't be a too big problem when you got a dictionary with you:)(well its not for me). listening and understanding is more difficult to do though.
thats the same with english: i don't really have to learn english the english grammar or the vocabulary. i'm able to write english comments without thinking becauso it's so similar to german. i think learning english shouln't be a big problem for dutch too.
But learning dutch is very difficult for the german becauso it too similar!
I can understand dutch but I'm not able to write any dutch sentences although I've been listening to a lot of dutch songs and movies. That's the same with norwegian and swedish, and sometimes also with finnish and icelandic: I can understand them because the languages are similar, but they are not similar enough to write and to speak them without any lessons.
Excuse me, Finnish similar to German? :D That's a good one. I bet u know that Finnish has nothing to do with German - maybe the only Indo-European language Finnish has some similarities with is Swedish, because of the big amount of loan words from Swedish to Finnish.
If anyone claims to understand any Finnish without studying, he's lying. Oh sorry - hello Estonians, u are free to claim that! :)
Yes Finnish is not an Indo-european language, an absolutely not similar to german, but there are some words (maybe swedish) that sound like indo-european words. or maybe i understood some words because i had a finnish friend some years ago, i don't know. finnish was a bad example, but i can understand written icelandic. maybe i'll start learning finnish one-day, it's a very beautiful language and there aren't a lot of languages with an "Ä" ^^
ìslenska is not related to the sami language at all. While ìslenska belongs to the indoeuropean group of languages, finnish and sami relates to the uralic language.
I wasn't talking about Icelandic at all. What I stated was that Finnish and Sami are related to each other, because they are both a part of the Uralic languages as you have already said. I did not even mention Icelandic in my previous comment.
I like all of them, just not the Norwegian one, its awful. The Finnish voice does have a maybe too mature voice for a young girl like Pocahontas, but the voice is very beautiful.
I love them all :D Can't decide which one is best. I suppose Norwegian is..The other voices are also beautiful, I sometimes find the Swedish one even prettier, however, to my mind the deeper, mature Norwegian voice suits Pocahontas better :)
I'm Swedish and I live in Finland.
All languages were good except Finnish :)
Finnish is just not a good language for Disney songs!!
Just my opinion...

1. Finnish - wise and mature voice fits perfectly, too bad she starts this multilanguage..
2. Norwegian - voice is very special, norwegian sounds super beautiful when she sings
3. Danish - her voice is very unique and warm, danish sounds special when she sings
4. Swedish - very beautiful voice but in my opinion too young for the character
5. Icelandic - Voice is very pretty but too "cold", can't feel the warmness..
I have feeling we all Nordic 90's kids kinda grew up in Disney's dream world x)

CymruDK 2 years ago
flensdude 2 years ago
CymruDK 2 years ago

It's a nordic language but it's not related to the other ones :)
malleeh 2 years ago 4
That is true, but it is related to another nordic language, Sami. Although, perhaps not so much as what Norwegian, Danish and Swedish are.
flensdude 2 years ago
ìslenska is not related to the sami language at all. While ìslenska belongs to the indoeuropean group of languages, finnish and sami relates to the uralic language.
Feltmadrassen 2 years ago
