  • How exactly does an artist go about and make a cover for a song? Do they have to buy the rights to the songs first/get permission from the artist?

  • i was looking for the honest version, which is always teh original... now i found it.....

  • In response to the description, yes, it is the chord progression to Glycerine, but it's actually Pachelbel's Canon in D, written 300 years before this song.

  • can someone help me find this version of this song? i can't find it! X(

  • I the singing in this version better, but the band sounds like high school kids playing in a garage..

  • Gosh. I just got hit with a wave of nostalgia.

  • this sounds like pink

  • *terrible * i can't type.

  • the production is teribel on this. the reason imbruglia's version was more successful is (apart from her image) that whoever arranged it understood better how good the underlying song was. this doesnt' bring ou tthe beauty of the song too well, particualrly in the verses. It's nothign to do with pop or non-pop, as (for example) Lou Barlow or J Mascis woudl have made this sound brilliant.

  • who sang this song originally ???

  • @3VictoriaWard Ednaswap... but it is difficult to download the song

  • @3VictoriaWard The amazing and wonderful Anne Preven!! :-)

  • definitely the best version for me.

  • Somehow I'd never heard this original version before. Sounds 90's to the core and I love it!

  • And The girl in this video looks just like Natalie Imbruglia

  • @MyKiCkNtOoNiE ............... Read the description.. "This is Ednaswap's "Torn" SET TO NATALIE IMBRUGLIA'S VIDEO"

  • no. I like Natalia's version better...

  • natali looks like neurotic after drugs dunno what hot they finding in her ...

  • who gives a shit if it has the same chord progression as Glycerine ?

  • @pontikas It's an interesting piece of trivia. No need to get defensive, Gavin.

  • @redlightmax it is more irrelevant than interesting. 1000 other songs have the same chord progression.

  • I like both versions. Covers happen. At least she did it justice.

And it doesn't hurt that she's hot as shit :)

  • I like both versions. Covers happen. At least she did it justice.

  • I like both versions. At least she did it justice. Covers happen. At least it's nice when they're good.

  • Anne Preven's vocal rocks!!! :) Im all for Ednaswap and Anne (respect), but i can honestly say i would not have heard of them if it hadnt been for Nat covering the song - now i'm into all Ednaswap's material and Anne is an awesome writer..:)... So Nat certainly didnt do these guys any harm by reaching a bigger audience with the tune :)

  • I know a bit about music theory and harmony, and I think that this version's chord progression is "unconventional". Natalie's version has a different progression...

    I don't like it :| sorry, but that's how I feel...

  • @cowscrubber They have the same chord progression, so you probably don't know that much about music theory

  • this is awesome!

  • damn so raw but goes right down to the core..

  • This is my favorite version of this song!. It pwns..

  • much better version 0.o i always thought it was natalie's song i never liked her version much funny i just found out this version its awesome ;)

  • This song is sooo fucking raw i love it, pure simple music you can tell very little computer work was put into it

  • Hi, please help me to get this version of song. I can't it. Thanks a lot!

  • Comment removed

  • Wow... never knew Imbruglia covered this track. Alwasy thought the Imbruglia version was the original. Thanks god we have Youtube... ;-)

  • I hadn't seen this until just now. Yikes ! The vid was so well synched I thought Natalie had done a hard rock version of it as well. There were just a couple of places it didn't match...I don't know what people were whining about.

BTW, this audio track kicks the living SHIT out of Natalie's fluffed up version. It's great with headphones.

  • This song is awesome, especially this version!

  • To be honest, while I like all the versions of the song (well, not really Brændt- the language just doesn't fit, I think. And Natalie Imbruglia's voice is almost too high on her version, as well) I don't think any of them have actually matched the quality of the written song, if that makes any sense. To me, it feels like something Hole, or Aimee Mann, or Metric should cover.

  • @Mothra61 I can see what you mean, and I like the thought

  • @Mothra61 Have you heard it with One Direction? Even though they're young boys it's actually my fave version of the song, you should hear it if you haven't yet.

  • The original song is "Brændt" by Lis Sørensen, it's in Danish and it's available here on YouTube.

  • i love this version better than the other persones. will not mention her name. i won'y buy her cds at all. she skiped formalityand didn't give ednaswap the credit for the song her lawyer got her off on a loop hole. besides this song has more feeling to it.

  • @ozzyslasher1970 She doesn't need to give them credit, they didn't write it.

  • @BlueSabb then who did?

  • This isn't the original Ednaswap recording but I like this - where did it come from? I can't find it. Is it another Ednaswap recording? Also, heard the Sternshow version live but would love to get a copy if anyone has that recorded and posted somewhere

  • @davednh1 Dave, actually it is. The version on Wacko Magneto is their second version. This is on the selftitled "Ednaswap" CD.

  • @JohnnyStanwyck Thanks a lot. i had it mixed up then.

    Appreciate the info.

  • @JohnnyStanwyck ...and the much better version; I still have both from the old days... :)

  • actualy the version they did on stern was awsome ednaswap's version studio version is complete garbage but then anne preformed it live on the howard stern show that was completely hands down version and has never been recreated as good but as far as a studio version goes eh its a toss up tween natalie and anne

  • I really like Natalie's version, but they certainly didn't sell it as a cover. I honestly wonder how successful Natalie Imbruglia would have been if she hadn't covered this song.

  • @hillerysean Well, did she have any other real hits? No? Well then you have your answer :)

  • @bobbybobbinson Erm...so shiver and counting down the days were failures, shiver was one of the biggest pan europe singles. Her first 2 albums Achieved great success as did her third. Her only album not to reach them heights is her latest due to it not being released internationally which is a shame because its an awesome song. You can tell that she has talent, as talented singers dont rush song after song out, they take their time and get a song which feels right even if its years apart.

  • @bobbybobbinson Oh SNAP!!! ha ha haaa I needed that.

  • I like them both. a good song is a good song x

  • this version is pretty much the same with natalie's.

  • Another excellent band hardly anyone knows about. Their Wonderland Park album is one of my all time favorites. Not a bad song on it.

  • Wow I never knew that Natalie's Torn was cover. I've been hoodwinked!

  • I never knew Natalie's song was a cover until now. I'm not sure why hers was so much more popular, they're both great sounding.

  • so awesome, both songs (natalie and this one) are so strong sounding, STRENGTH!!! anyone else think that both natalie and anne are both totally smoking hot????

  • This version definitely expresses the emotions better with the music.

With that being said, I still prefer Natalie's version because it always takes me back to my childhood.

  • I'll always like natalie's better. To me it was more dark and myterious even tho it was pop. It always sucked me in more, this one just drags on, Left of the middle is just a great album all together.

  • I respect that this is the original version, but the chord progression is just horrible.

Natalie's cover was much smoother, and I'm not digging the Janis Joplin vocals on this one.

This is a rare case where the cover is better.

You wanna see a bad cover? I got a punk cover of Sixpence None the Richer's "Kiss Me" with your name on it.

  • Just checked out a few other covers... Lis Sorensen's and Trine Rein's... Ednaswap's is still the best.

  • OMG,i thought the same. :/

  • omg, im fuckin disappointed in Natalie now :D im grown up as i know it was her original song..... damn my childhood was a LIE !!! :'( thats sad. btw this version is even better :D and finally i can respect the original writer/band :)

  • I feel the same way.

  • i really want chords for this. the guitarings great :)

  • Go look up Canon in D by Pachelbel. =P

  • @venim619 Or they could do it the easy way and look up "Pachelbel rant" or "Axis of awesome 4 chords" here on youtube ;-)

  • @BladeGuitarGirl It's I-V7-vi-IV

  • It's more better than Imbruglia version! Awesome!

  • First recording of this song ever is from Danish recording artist Lis Sorensen who recorded it in 1993. Previn and Cutler from the band Ednaswap wrote it, and it was translated into Danish for Lis Sorensen to use on her recording the same year. The first version was called "Braendt" ("Burned"). All later versions (including Natalie Imbruglia´s) are inspired by Lis Sorensen´s version, since Ednaswap´s original is very different. Search for: "lis sorensen braendt".

  • This version is most awesome! How have I never heard of these folks? I must get out more! LOL

  • Where do people get their information? Ednaswap are the original artists that wrote and recorded this song. Inbruglia in interviews came off as being the song writer pissing off Ednaswap and you can see why. People think their original version is a cover. Shame!

  • This is not the original verison of this song released. There was that Sorensen lady.

Also I think this as the 'Radio Edit' version of the song, where they tried to make it sound more like Imbruglia's pop version, which was released 1 year after Imbruglia's version.

  • Comment removed

  • Hahah.. no, this song came out two years before Imbruglia's did and is actually Ednaswap's original version. Not only that, but the arrangement was demoed out in 1993 when the song was written.

  • natalie cover is better

  • way better lol

  • @itsmixtape - who is natalie?

  • @dilaudid a great australian singer, she put this song in the top of the music charts all around the world :)

  • lol grunge

  • it's the original

  • Was there ever a version of this song recorded in Spanish? I could swear that when Natalie's version first came out I heard on the internet a mashup of her song and an earlier sounding recording in spanish.

  • There was one by Lis Sørenson, which I think you can find on here. It wasn't in Spanish, but some Scandinavian language I think.

  • @bobbybobbinson

True. Lis Sørensen did the first release of this song in 1993 with lyrics in danish. Titled "brændt".

  • @bobbybobbinson ... ... :) Yaaa ... Danish it was, - Lis Sørensen ' Brændt ' ... can be found here on YouTube

  • @bobbybobbinson That language is called Danish, and her song is called Brændt..

  • this version is heavily heavily produced as well. The sound palette is just a lot more rough around the edges. The drum sounds are very 1972, the voice is a little more edgy. There's serious multi-tracked percussion and stuff on this though. These guys sound like monster players every bit as much as natalie's version. Can't you hear all the ear candy? what about 1:22? That's pretty slick! This chick is a great singer too. Natalie is gorgeous...but not as strong a singer at all.

  • I was thinking of posting something along the same lines. This whole album actually has very good production, in fact it might be a little OVERproduced. The fact is, they used the production to go for a different sound, and they succeeded very well.

  • haha

You must be the one other person on youtube who's brain works. Nice to meet you finally! What you been up to?

  • It seems you have your tongue right up bobbybobbinson's arsehole. Be sure to tell me what his prostate tastes like!

  • i like this version more than the version of natalia ...... dont you?

  • the singer sounds like she's trying to have a shit!

  • I find Natalia Imbruglias voice borig. To few great songwriters and bands gets the attention they deserve cause people rather see a pretty face with a great but boring voice and perfectly poliched mainstream production.

  • "Anyone who doesn't understand that this version is better, clearly doesn't understand music."

You do know This version is the Ednaswap version, right??

  • I love the Natalie Imbruglia version (since It's the only one I've ever heard--apparently there 2 other versions that were huge in Europe before hers came out) anyway, I always thought the song would have sounded better with a singer who had a tougher, grittier voice--like Anne Preven's---it just seems more appropiate given the subject matter---I always thought it was about a relationship torn apart by one person having some tough issues--like drug addiction or something.

  • You're joking right? Is it news to you that people actually have different opinions about what they want from music? Some people like pop stuff, some people don't. The fact that you aren't capable of understanding tells me that you're the one who doesn't understand music.

  • NOOB.....Natalie just covered the song by Ednaswap? Oh yeah? Before you reply, search wiki

  • No it doesnt. Listen to the emotion in the original. This song is personal and Nat doesnt do it justice. This song is about a women who has had her virginity taken away is all the aspects of 'it' being taken away.

  • Isn't it the classic case of "good girls go to heaven..." ? Nat was soooo nice that every mother woul have loved to see her as daughter in law while Anne Preven is grounded, real and interested in a good Song rather than MTV appearances...? The Original is straight and great

  • It's not stealing... She payed them and she made a cover. Well Natalie's version is more catchy and melodious so it's more popular. That's all. I prefer Natalie's version, but Ednaswap wrote this, and this is great!

  • She payed for the use and didnt give ednaswap any credit when she won that award. Also the original group doesnt get paid in this case. I saw the group in concert a couple years back. They were really great!

  • I like both versions each in their respectful right. The vocals on this and the drums really kick this song into gear, along with the mysterious guitar sounds. But I like the holy sounding of Natalie Imbruglia during the non vocal parts. Both in their own right is amazing.

  • It's called a cover guys, it's not like Imbruglia stole the song 0_o.

  • @Caturdayz true, but its kinda silly that the only reason she got famous was from covering a song

  • @Caturdayz It's the fact that it's practically the only song people know Imruglia.

  • @Caturdayz

And Natalie Imbruglia made this song sooo famous, so it;s a cover that many true artists would be proud if they could be covered like Natalie did with Ednaswap.

  • @Caturdayz Exactly, the whole band would of made a shit load in royalties from this and that's all thanks to Natalie.

  • @Caturdayz Glee does it all the time.

  • @Caturdayz and what are covers all about ? :)

  • I'm happy with the original, sound pretty similar.

  • I love Anne Previn

  • FUCK YOU.

  • Anne Preven is nothinig like pink. she is raw & the real deal. Ive seen Ednaswap & Anntenna several times. I miss those concerts at the roxy. They opend for No Doubt's Tragic Kindom concert at the pond way back. & they kicked ass. Natalie's bubble gum version is okay & I was excited to here Anne's song on the radio but, How id love to hear clown show & torn live again. I still blast my EdnaSwap cd's & my kids sing their songs now. if you cant tell they're one of my all time favorite bands.

  • If you can, try to get hold of Annetenna's self-titled album. (They were the rebranded Ednaswap.) The band released all the tracks as mp3s free of charge. And they're all bloody brilliant.

  • ednaswap es un grupo genial ... les recomiendo buscar musica sobre ellos y se sorprenderan de la calidad musical que tienen ....

  • i think i like this version better.

  • Gracias por subir el video, esta chica es la que se merece la fama y el reconocimiento, simplemente hay que pensar en que fué ella quien creo estas divinas melodías y no Natalie, que solo las versionó, y nada más...great!

  • still wonderin, did natalie hit this song on modern rock tracks of ednaswap? still wonderin...cuz this charted at #12. tell me...

  • the singer if Ednaswap reminds me of Pink.

    that's crazy.

  • i agreed this version is better than th eversion of natalie, but this version only 'cause there are like 3 other versions from th esame group

  • Funny thing about this version is that the rest of Natalie Imbruglia's album kinda sounds like this, "Torn" is the only light and breezy track on the Imbruglia album. This version is my favorite, cool idea putting it to Nat's video.

  • I like Ednaswap's version the most because it's the original. Imbruglia just made a simple cover of it.

  • @Nepjoe

this is not the original, the original is from Lis Sørensen, it's called "Brændt",

  • Lis Sorensen first recorded it, but it was written by ednaswap.

  • that's right, I still did not know when I answered the first time LOL

  • Oh my goodness! I didn't know that Natalie's version was only a cover!!!...Oh men I think I love this version more!!!!... thanks for the upload, I'm really into the classics...Yepee!..new band discovery again.l..I hope you can upload more songs from them...(*-*,)...Ednaswap!

  • Super vocal by Ann Previn

  • Nats is super hot

  • damn, i like it!!!....

  • Great song by EDNASWAP

  • little bit is to slow if I may notice that....

    But keep on going on...

  • There is a quicker version by EDNASWAP on the right under related videos.

  • is she singing about god? if she is this is how i feel...

  • Shes not singing , It's Ann Preven who is singing here. Awesome *****

  • what? she meant "is she singing about god", not "is god singing this", lmao

  • It's Ann Previn who is singing here. It's an overlay over the video from Natalie.

  • It could be interpreted that way, but it's probably about a relationship. Then again, it could be about her relationship with God. Anyway, just interpret it as what it means to you. It makes it more powerful that way.

  • I think the chorus part could be even heavier, awesome Rock song!

  • Ann Preven kick ass period.

  • This should never been sung as a pop song. It's a dark song and should be sung as such. EDNASWAP got it correct.

  • Just so you know, I'm extremely mad that Sony put an ad to buy the Natalie Imbruglia song on the beginning of this video. You can buy the better Ednaswap version of this song on iTunes, or if you want this version, buy Ednaswap's self-titled CD from Amazon or eBay. Don't buy Natalie's version when you can get the original plus a lot of awesome songs for less!

  • They both versions are great but when natalie realesed the song became a worldhit

  • There are redeeming qualities in both versions, although this is better as it is more rock-music, whilst if you admitted you liked a Natalie Imbruglia song you would forever be embarrassed

  • This kind of reminds me of 4 Non Blondes. It's cool! I do prefer natalie's just because it's always been my favorite tune as is.

  • Kind of wish I'd heard this before the Natalie one. That's somewhat a guilty pleasure but this is punk as fuck!

  • Its funny.. it sounds like THIS would be the cover to Torn, not the original. As if they took the pop song and made it indie..? i guess...

  • i prefer the pop version by natalie, its a bit catchier.

  • Wow, the video is actually playing instead of just showing a few still shots... but it's out of step with the music!

  • it is very rare for someone to cover a song and be better than the original but natalie imbruglia did that, she and her team were clever enough to see this song could be a big hit (though they were not the only ones at the time). Nat's cover is awesome, which is why it is still being played on the radio 10+ years later. Ednaswap did write it but they didn't make it a pleasent song to listen to..at least not for me.

  • They also play Nickelback and Creed on the radio, although with your excellent taste in music, I wouldn't be surprised if you didn't understand why that was a bad thing.

  • Music snobs are funny.

You guys will sit there and trash someone because of the music they like AND you think it means something.

Grow up. People like what they like. Stop being douchey.

  • lol well said! There's so much hypocrisy by these snobs. If you like it, good. If not then leave it. No need to dismiss others, or criticize others because of it. I'll also wait for some idiot to give me a thumbs down :)

  • good example how important is producer. Natalie's producer made a great job with this track, they gave it better sounds, something what this original version haven't got, here is too much rubbish in the background

  • i take a group of musicians writing music from their souls than a producer any day.

  • I agree. I think it's kind of pathetic that people actually LIKE the whole music industry thing where they suck the feeling out of songs and suck the talent out of real people when the only benefit is that a song is a little bit more "pleasant" to listen to. Then you forget about it two weeks later. This song has lasting power because it was written by real people and expresses emotions about an actual event.

  • Did you know Ednaswap's and Nathalie's versions, as well as 2 other covers, were produced by the same person, Phil Thornalley?

  • Sorry nataie but this is better than you cover.

  • lol heman...

nat is a music icon before she sang this.

so the formula is nat+torn = music star

she cant reach that high without this kewl song.

    anyways.

this one is ligtyears better than the pop one.

  • are you sure this is the real version?

my Ednaswap version is pretty different.

  • Yeah it's the real deal.

This is the first one, but there are at least 4 different Ednaswap versions. What does yours sound like? I'd like to have it if I don't already.

  • well, first, my version is slower, the voice sounds sharper, and is definitely more grunge.

  • I think you might be referring to the one that is titled "TORN - EDNASWAP original artists" on YouTube. I think it's better than this one, but that's because I'm more into grunge haha.

  • hey, you're right, it's the one I was talking about. Better than this one indeed.

  • Cool. That one is from their 2nd CD, Wacko Magneto.

  • This sounds a lot like Melissa Etheridge.

  • where can i download this version from?

  • Hendrix' cover of "All Along The Watchtower" was much better than the original by Bob Dylan. Jeff Buckley's version of "Hallelujah" was better than Leonard Cohen's original. And Nat's version of "Torn" is better than any of the original versions by Ednaswap. Great singing, but the playing and production is pretty ordinary. Nat's cover lifts it from obscure to relevant. If there hadn't been a cover version, the song would've been forgotten a long time ago. And Ednaswap got PAID so can't complain.

  • Nope

  • I agree. Nat's version is better. It is less distorted, simpler, and more musically sound. Without Nat, this awesome song wouldn't be known

  • And without this song we wouldn't know about her...

  • well people say natalie stole it but that's impossible the original had to be copyrighted to be on ednaswap's album which means the band had to ok natalie's use of the song
