  • thats pretty cool, is it possible to sweep pick and tap on these?

  • Sounds good man. What technique did you use to get the frets out? Then did you do anything to the fingerboard to improve the sound? I've got a Squier that I'm this close to turning fretless, but haven't decided whether to use a glass slab, polished sheet aluminum, or most likely just fill the fret slots and use flatwound strings.

  • Uhm so why did u choose to make a fretless instead of a normal? Is it easier to play on a fretless or what?

  • @dadikiuz

he took a normal guitar and removed the frets. he didn't "make" this guitar. He just wanted a fretless guitar for the unique, new sound illustrated in the video.

A fretless is not easier to play by any means.

  • JesseS420, glad to hear you say i've got an IQ of about room temperature: it's 112 C in my head: that's where i live.

Why are you searching for an argue on a vid you don't even like. hope you'll die in the next 5 minutes

Nice vid btw!!, but there was some "distortion" in the commentpanel

  • nice playing !

  • How did you grind them down? Was the finish on the fretboard compromised? I got an old shitty parts neck sitting here and I wanna do this but I don't want to waste it.

  • re: Dogdashdash

The video blog at youtube v=ec-FFH7CBpA has a demonstration on turning an electric to a fretless.

  • Sounds a lot like Tool, very pleasant to hear, if only the higher notes would not squeak that much...

  • Out of curiosity, mind giving me some tips on how I could make my Johnson fretless? I was never the top of the Design & Technology class. ;)

  • get some fretpuller or go puy a pair of end nippers and grind the face of them on a flat surface.

  • j/w whats the difference with no frets and frets?

  • nothing, except it might be easier to slide up and down the neck.

  • you must be fucking dumb, you just answered you question, it doesn't have any fucking frets, meaning you have to have your fingers in just the right spot to get the note your after.

god i am sick of people with an IQ of about room temperature.

  • ummm what, i said whats the difference between no frets and a guitar with frets?

  • yeah one has frets and the other doesn't have any fucking frets, what do you not know what frets are, if not... well do i have to say?

  • buddy i meant wats the difference playing wise idc care bout the frets...i just wanna know which one anyone here would think is easier to play...or do u have to be a dick bout it?

  • the way you put it you sound clueless and you still do.

yes playing a fretless is a lot harder but offers a fretless sound when sliding.

  • well, he just took the frets off of the guitar and filled the spaces in with wood filler, so he can see where the frets used to be, thats why his intonation is so good.

  • Wow. your intonation is dead on. You can't even hear its fretless for the first minute.

HAs anyone used a fretless with a lot of distortion?

  • I'm almost done making my fretless, now all I need to do is learn how to play it! Any advice on string guages? I think I heard heavier is better? Your thoughts please...

  • ultra light strings

  • is that a little ditty you made up yourself? or is it a tabbed song?

what i wanna know is, at the risk of sounding really, really ignorant, would i be able to play that on my acoustic, or is that kind of sound/song restricted to a fretless guitar?

    thanks :)

  • you could play it on any guitar. its just something i improvised off the top of my head. the only thing thats would sound different is that it wouldn't slide into the notes as much and may lose a little bit of the really dark feel. but it could definitely work!

  • ah i see, that's interesting thanks.

the dark feel is actually what attracted me to it in the first place, but i'll give it a go anyway.

    thanks for that.

  • What strings and tuning are you using, I'm having a nightmare trying to get mine to sound good, I can't get it anywhere near EADGBE and not having too much tension, mines 2 tones lower than that and strung 10-47, which is too light.

  • Why the hell would he regret an Epiphone? hahahaa.

  • Because they're like $800 aren't they?

  • Lolno. Even the high end models aren't very good, in my opinion. Jsut get a lower end Les Paul for that same money for a lot more quality.

  • regret it dont you

  • How is the transition from fretted to fretless? I've been thinking about making mine fretless, as well.

Sounds nice and mellow, but I want more treble, can't you give it some coating and it'll give you a treble-y tone? and what about stuff like sustain and comfort? I heard sustain is absolutley destroyed.

  • go play your banjo, no crap its an epiphone, the other million people on youtube know that what i meant was that i modified it. Go critisize someone who deserves it, like yourself.

  • why would he risk trashing an awesome/expensive guitar over an experiment like this? epiphone is perfect, no loss if you fuck it up eh?

  • WEEEEEWOOOOOO RETARD ALERT

  • lolwtf

  • man, thats class.. sounds like a sitar!! haunting sound.. well done

  • Do you have a particular string you prefer with the fretless?

  • nope, any will do

  • wts the difrence in the sound from fretless to has frets please reply

  • you can slide into the notes instead, and its not perfectly in tune which if played correctly can actuaslly sound pleasing. Its like the difference between a regular bass guitar and a standup, or a guitar and a cello, or a mandolin and a violin. ALso similar could be a guitar using a slide. but the fretless is more mellow sounding.

  • thats cool i have a n old acoustic ill make it thanx

  • i wouldn't recommend doing it on an acoustic, it probably won't be audible, so unless its acoustic/electric, i recommend trying only on an electric.

  • ok i have an old strat i ll try do u use wood filler ?

  • i recommend just taking out the frets and see if thats good enough for you, it was for me.

  • ok thanx

  • It works fine on an acoustic, in fact there's a myspace page dedicated to acoustic fretless guitarists, just google 'unplugged and unfretted.

  • Sounds great, maybe I do one too.

  • Yeah I like that. It sounds great and I like that fact that you are playing it in the western style with it too.

  • Cool thanks for the info, and please do make another!

  • That's cool, I wanna try that with my epiphone that I don't care about anymore.

  • I recommend just removing the frets....taking time to fill in the spaces is a waste or time, a little money and you'll definately end up ruining the flatness of the guitar when you sand the filler....I only filled half the neck....that half doesn't work well....I left the whole lower half untouched and it it smooth as silk. Besides, you'll be playing it in no time.

  • The more notes you slide into, the better it sounds..i recorded this before i found that out, it sounds much cooler now, i'll have to post another soon.
