THE EXORCIST IS NOT I REPEAT IS NOT A HORROR MOVIE THAT WAS NOT THE INTENT OF THE AUTHOR NOR THE FILM MAKER IT IS A VERY ADULT DRAMA WITH SUPERNATURAL UNDERPINNINGS
@TheNiktendo The only actress that I can think of in the last 20 years would be Jena Malone, the young girl who played as disturbing role at a similar age in the movie "Bastard Out Of Carolina".
I wonder if this film could even be made with a young actress these days with all of the changes in the labour laws and union limitations?
@larouxluva Yeah , Merrin even says to Karras " He`s a liar , The Demon is a liar ! Whatever he may say , don`t listen ! Remain focused on the task ! " Although it`s strange that Merrin didn`t recognize The Pale Scarred Face , Yellow Eyes , Rotting Teeth & Voice of Pazuzu considering he`s exorcised him before ! It`s possible he`s exorcised so many Demons and All showed Similar Traits that it was hard for him to tell them apart !
I recall vivdly all the speculation surrounding Linda's supposed melt-down,& the mysterious, inexplicable events during & after filming.Whatever the truth the profile of this superb film was maintained & continues to be.The film played directly to our inner-most fears, that of 'good' versus 'evil' like never before.I seriously doubt that this film will ever be bettered as THE most shocking film of all time!
Her performance was fantastic and utterly convincing. This film is a masterpiece as far a film can be. Also she was and is a very beautiful creature. The really great works of art, cinema and music have been made. We can only copy them.
it mustve affected linda blair in her private time alone and thoughts ,she wouldnt be human otherwise.she mustve had the thought am i evil now? i know i would.
@milewalker1 but you must agree with me she must have had thoughts/worries after she saw the film like i said .she mustve thought am i evil?will i get to heaven, her mum is crazy to allow her kid to do the role i have a son of 14 im 34 but if i had a daughter id never allow that as a parent its unresponsible and fame hungry over her childs psychological condition.
@jimpurdie why would she think that? she spent hours every day getting the make up put on, watching all the special effects get made... she of all people would know it's just a movie and fake.
if you watched this documentary you would see she was smart and mentally stable and she didnt believe in the devil, that is why they chose her....
it's not irresponsible, only idiots can't make the different between movie and reality.
@Stace1976 its still a hell of a load pardon the pun, on a young girls shoulders and when it was released and mothers didnt want their daughters near linda and folk really thought she was evil then suicides and people being commited must have infact we now know she indeed was affected psychologically ,9 folk died making this movie even the man tasked with refrigerating the room where all the scary things happen.good debating with you are you male or female? age group? country im jim 34 from uk.
@jimpurdie you should buy the blue ray some time yit will have ACTUAL behind the scenes not just a documentery on making the film but actual video of it, and you can see how linda is laughing having a great time drinking a smoothy back stage. :)
I think that has to be one of the bravest performances in movie history, especially for such a young actress. I, too, think she should have won the Oscar for this role (thank GOD she was nominated!)
@INTERPOLFAN17 agreed, who cares if she didn't do the voice she still played the part brilliantlly, people forget that acting isn't about your voice, just look at silent films, sure they OVER-act but they still mannage to tell a story without any diolouge and linda's paformance was brilliant weather it had the voice or not
@TheCheetahwings definitely although the voice made it a lot creepier.i think the academy always looks down on child actors they figure hey they have their whole life ahead to win an academy award lets give it to this person who's an adult. ehh what can you do?
As her mother says, it was done in good taste. That is, they were making an amazing piece of art and in the company of good people. PLUS there was a body double for the more "explicit" scenes (such as the crucifix scene). Linda Blair didn't even know what she was doing, as she says in the documentary The Fear Of God.
@pulsedemon Eileen Dietz would kick your ass for calling her A Body Double ! She SPECIFICALLY said in An Interview she was NOT A Body Double , SHE WAS IN THE MAKEUP MORE THAN LINDA ! SHE STILL RECEIVES RESIDUALS !
@1993MovieMan eileen was not in the makeup more than linda.... eileen is in the movie for about 20 seconds at most, and usually are only quick flashes and shots of her back. linda blair did 99% of it.
Linda Blair is a fantastic actress who was outstanding in the role of a possesed kid, and people actually thought she was possesed. How stupid can you get?
Sorry, but the crucifix going into her legs was always there. Take it from one who saw the original theatrical release, the first VHS release and the first DVD. It's not one of the added scenes for TVYNS. And it was one of the films most shocking moments, the thing that, more than any other moment in the film, made people vomit and flee the theater. It's amazing he doesn't remember it.
I've wondered at that statement, too, since I first saw this and all that I can think is perhaps the only copy of the film that Blatty saw was an audience test cut while certaiin scenes, like the below the waist crucifix scene, were still being petitioned to the film board? I know that there was a long drawn out process of getting some scenes passed.
According to Ellen Burstyn the scene that people reacted to the worst was the needle going in the throat for the spinal tap.
Have you seen the movie "Seytan", the Turkish version of the Exorcist with horrible acting and even worse special effects? It's cringe worthy, but a good watch if only for the, "You have got to be fucking kidding me" reaction.
It's like an introductory course Exorcist for the real Exorcist, LOL. Like going from Sesame Street to The Muppet Show.
"We're gonna show you this so that you'll get the gist of what is going to happen in the film and if you can't handle it then no Exorcist for you, young lady :)"
Actually, if you've read Blatty's novel, "Seytan" is very interesting because it contains many elements from the book that were not included in the Warner Bros film, such as the book on Satanism laying around the house, the funeral of Karras's mother, the girl doing poorly in math, many others. I'll have to make a list sometime. Someone involved in the Turkish version read the novel and put some ideas in.
@thegirl44 No, I said it used to be on here, it's long gone now, unless someone uploaded it yesterday. The Turkish version is up, why don't you watch that, don't have to worry about Youtube pulling that! lmao
Turkish Star Wars, Superman and Rambo are all totally hilarious. So bad they are a laugh riot. Never mind the production values, special effects or acting, he story is all over the place and nothing makes sense.
Won't watch the Turkish version of The Exorcist, because unlike those mentioned it's "holy ground" as far as I am concerned
Actually, if you get past the prodiction failings that you've listed that plague Turkish cinema the story as told in the Turkish production is more true to Blatty's novel than the US production, it's just near impossible getting past the production lol.
Ever seen writer-director Blatty's 'The Ninth Configuration'?
