This beautiful and popular air was originally called "Dr Mackay's Farewell to Creagorry" by its composer Iain McLachlan in the late 1950's. When David Silver of Inverness was asked to write a song for a 1963 BBC Scotland thriller called "The Dark Island", filmed in Benbecula Uist, he used McLachlan's air and set it words to it.
well to clarify for you - the tune is a traditional tune . But was recorded by Ian Powrie;s band in the 60s. Jimmy Blue played the button key accordion as the solo introduction. I consider it to be the best rendition of this traditional tune - albeit that words have been added at various stages over the years.
RosythBornNbred - yer no quite right there.... itstrad and Ian powrie with Jimmy Blue on box made it famous for the TV series and then the first of the new age recording and probably still the very best
thats the first song i sung tht was ever givin a decent rating at my fife scholl i later on became the head choir girl and did 2 professional plays with companys around scotland its a gorgeous song
Very good work!
