This is a song that a woman played for me just after I returned from overseas and said to always remember her. Her name was Deamnna Simms, if you are out there Deanna respond to this comment with something can identify with Rocky.:)
This has got to be one of the smoothest songs ever! The bass line is genius, as are the accents played by the organ. Amazingly simple, yet brilliant and Babara's voice just puts it over the top! I wish I could have written a song like this.
While this does seem to be slowed down, I still think what I've always thought about this song ... that it's one of the most sensual songs ever written.
any chance you could post barbara singing "its magic" cant find it anywhere ?? many thanks for posting this, real nice little memory jerker, regards dave
can no one, can sing this song like queen latifah even thou when i first heard it , growin up in the era!! mind u ,i was only 10 yrs.old ! no disrepect! to the orignal artist but when i heard the queen latifah sang dissss blew me away!!!!
Hello Judy-I'm so glad we're not strangers anymore. It's been a mighty long time. Baby I'm yours. Come back to me and I'll make you my baby. Indiana Dave.
I wish they would bring back songs like this, the 60's were a great time for me and so was the music. They had meaning for me some good some bad. But mostly good. LadyProwler100
This classic was done over forty years ago. The original had the Mighty Dells singing background. Queen Latifa should have asked them to perform on her version. Now that would have been Majestic for the Queen.
@Dsheik911 I had no idea that was the dells. I grew up down the street from Chess records and didnt know it was making history. Is Barbra from Chicago as well? I know there were great acts coming out of Chess, including Maurice white, Minnie Ripperton, Even the Chi lites did some recording there. and of course the Mighty Mighty Dells.
I always felt that this song was misnamed! "Hello Stranger" is only said at the intro..But the recurring theme should be the title---"Seems Like a Mighty Long Time"!
when i hear that barbara lewis hello stranger sound like something that Smokey Robinson and the Miracles will sing and sound and with Billy Preston on Organ.Billy preston shouldve joined and play with motown, barbara lewis shouldve joined motown instead of stax records, she and smokey are from Michigan in the motor city.
Smokey shouldve sung it to Baby Im Yours and Hello Stranger
A #1 hit for Barbara Lewis on the Rhythm & Blues charts. It was the 114th #1 R&B song of the Rock Era. It also hit #3 on the Top 40 charts. Her biggest hit.
To the reviewer who thinks this is slower than usual, if you are under 40 it is just you and the rest of everyone else that is younger. This is what Hello Stranger sounded like when I first started hearing it in 1970. The frequency of the C key needs to go back to what it was from the mid 80's on back to the 1800's. I hate today's standard concert pitch and how music has actually all been raised one comp-lete half step from yesterday. C major, this song's original key, is now old D-flat.
I understand that on this touching, bluesy, 1963 classic, Barbara Lewis was backed by the great soul group, the Dells (1968's "Stay In My Corner," etc.)
@HOT923LosAngeles I wish I had my 45's carrying case still...before my time I know...what do you think. Is there a lady on planet earth who can sing her song even as nice!....HOT923LosAngeles woe!..FOX!Rock'sCzar!51!

This is slower than usual. Or is it just me? The pitch is a bit lower too. Maybe it's one of the first pressings that was transferred to CD.
