During WWII, John Wayne, who was in a lot of war movies, was booed by marines when he tried to make a patriotic speech to them. If he was so fucking patriotic, why wasn't he in uniform? In the sixties, when I was a Vietnam soldier, he was still the super-patriotic asshole. A guy, like Bush Jr., a war-monger who can't be bothered to serve.

John Wayne tried to volunteer to serve in the United States Navy but he was considered too old and the Navy said that it would be better for him to remain in Hollywood and support the morale of the nation and our troops as an entertainer.

Wayne never volunteered for any service and was not to old serve. Wayne was born in 1907' many others like Clark Gable born in 1901' & Eddie Albert born in 1906' served and saw combat.
John Wayne was exempted from service with a 3-A (family deferment)in 1941'. In May, 1944, Wayne was reclassified as 1-A (draft eligible), but the studio obtained another 2-A deferment.

Although there was no war going on when I was in, I have an uncle with a Silver Star from Korea, one with a purple heart from Italy in WWII, one who lied about his age to join the merchant marines in WWII, one who was an MP and three cousins who served.

But all in all, I think his best service was the credit he gave to the military and its fighting forces in all the great movies he was in--that people flocked to see in droves, and still do today, long after his death. So from that perspective, I think he did serve. So when Veterans Day comes, and I turn on TV, I can see John Wayne in the Sea Bees, or charging through the Sands of Iwo Jima. I just don't see Bill Clinton.

The Duke wasnt drunk. In 1964 he was diagnosed with lung cancer and had his left lung removed along with four ribs. He sounds drunk because he often wouldn't take his oxygen with him during public appearances. He was in the Army between WWI and WWII. He was and is still a great American. Sadly I believe he would be ashamed if he'd seen what his beloved country had become.

In 1944' Wayne was re-classified as 1-A draft eligible but Republic Studios who held his contract got him re-classified 2-A until the end of the war.

The Duke was an American icon more than an American hero. A great patriot of his country without a shadow of a doubt. He gave a face to real men on the big screen who were certainly honored to be portrayed by none other than the Duke himself.
Was he a hero, no. But he never claimed to be either.

john wayne never ONCE wore any uniform outside his movie roles other than when he played football in college. Idolizing wayne for being anything but a great actor is like the worship of Ronald Reagan, who didn't have to serve on the front for not being able to see " fine details" but could still see well enough to run a movie camera. you'd think the army couldn't give him a pair of glasses and send him to the front.

You don't have to wear a uniform to be a true patriot, in fact there are some in uniform that are not patriots at all. I think he did a service to the military and Americans by playing the parts of great uniformed and non-uniformed heroes. Just because you didn't serve in the military or haven't seen any action doesn't mean you are incapable of being patriotic. Sure he made money, it was his job after all, but not many actors speak to the youth and advocate for America like he did.

@1944jhd John Wayne wanted to serve during WW2. However, he was disqualified because of old football injuries, his status as a husband and father of four and his age (34). He personally went to DC to appeal the decision and join the Navy.
