liked the split-screen performance to compliment the siamese twins/theme. cool how you can comprehend two different perspectives at the same time, which parallels Danielle's split-personality. Margot Kidder did a great job as a french girl too, though until they said she was french I thought she was doing an Italian accent.
I rented this store once in 1991 and loved it so much that I´ve always wanted to watch it again , but could not remember its name ! Thanks for making my dream come true ! :)
Another mistake Benny made was in not scoring the first bathroom scene, when Danielle first takes pillls. It doesn't make sense; this is an important scene; not just a routine shot of someone taking an analgesic (say, a Doris Day scene) but a critical moment & a thematic moment too. Note his scores the later bathroom pill scene.
What I meant by my previous comment about a cue for the "husband," was more like a stinger: a sudden strong chord, to add menace, hence a false narrative arc. But another problem is clearly with the camera and editing. Many scenes look like video with little staging (Salt and "mom" outside the bakery for one example); or the car drive with mother: all in a single take. Many scenes are shot like that w/o interest or focus; no POV shot as Salt approaches the mental home.
To criticize Herrmann might be a sacrilege, like a Catholic criticizing the pope, but had Herrmann composed a sinister cue for the husband outside the building it would have greatly increased suspense, hence interest, in the long prologue to the murder. Moreover it would have created a red herring, along the lines of the money in PSYCHO. The narrative arc would have been on the "husband," and his potential danger to the black guy; instead BH leaves the scene unscored & the sequence is boring.
Actually I prefer Jennifer Salt. Don't know why DePalma wanted that Quebec accent. Herrmann was right that DePalma was not Hitchcock, tho that quote is often taken out of context, as an insult. What Herrmann meant was Hitch could afford to have no action because people KNEW something would happen (PSYCHO), but, as in this case, the film drags in the first part because the viewer doesn't expect something to happen & the early scenes btn the man and Kidder are not interesting enough.
Totally cool youtube addition. This movie was a staple rerun on TV in the 1980s. NETFLIX has these movies where they rush in the streaming rights, where it might run for a week or more, then only the DVD for mail. Here I see SISTERS is available on streaming. Margot Kidder was humorous and lethal as the psycho surviving cojoined sister as a fashion model and her sick doctor. Never trust a birthday cake with a knife given to a sleeping person in bed!
Awesome looking flick! Filmed in my hometown ;) Btw, I was wondering if you had another underrated horror flick which was filmed in Staten Island called "He Knows You're Alone" from 1980?! It was Tom Hanks debut film.
Good film but Margot Kidder's French accent is truly horrific.
