  • that unison at 0:41 makes me cry. Someone call 911, I cant breathe

  • liked bass in old school drum corps - only 1 stick required

  • i think that the Cadets are my favorite bass line. this video is life changing :o

  • @tyj0322 watch a day with holy bass-cadets 2008

  • am i the only one that thinks the first bass is huge?

  • Soooo clean

  • holy bass

  • Oh my GOD!!!! Rim shot at :33.... SEXXY!!!!!

  • Dat bass 5 sound.

  • 0:41 = awesome! lol

  • has the old closer parts. good stuff.

  • Damn.. Just noticed that that's a HUGE 1 drum!

  • @treefalse 20" I love cadets bass drum sizing... and the tuning is great. Limited muffling... Makes sense since those unmuffled drums will project more to the audience

  • @Buhzie15 Dude, that's got to be 22"-24". It is a good idea though, I mean, they sound awesome and less muffling is always better.

  • the uniformity in this bassline is always spectacular. love it

  • :33 that shot was beautiful

  • The drums are SO beautiful...

  • top bass is hauling some tail...awesome lick!

  • there bass drums dont reallyy differ in size.

  • @robertthedrummer1 but they have beast tuning.

  • 3:13 beast hahaha

  • Is it possible to find tonal bassline (6) sheet music online? I'm a senior in HS and I can play some of what they do really clean. But HS bass lines suck so I have to practice on my own time cause teaching them is impossible. I need to study much more advanced material for college. Does anyone have any references?

  • @shaun147852 your only as strong as your weakest link. judges look at uniformity - it might suck but its best to try to bring up other members of your line to your level.

  • EWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW so nasty!!!

  • Beautiful!!! The stereotype of marching bass is some guy playing quarters with a big, fluffy mallet.

  • alright so this first bass guy......total bad ass

  • stylishy.....i am a the cadets fanatic fan....

  • GRITS! =)

  • holy bass

  • @DJCatura They sound bad up close but from farther away they sound so much better. and they arent the same size..

  • @aznpwr2

Very true with these Aungst Cadets lines, I hate the way they sound up close but they sound fantastic further away.

  • supe , ótimo , amei

  • those 1st bass rim shots make me orgasm

  • god damn, those splits are insane.

  • Did they say "grits" at 1:11?

  • @Zero15555 yeah, a few before it sometimes they say grinch :]

  • HOLY SHIT!!!!

  • i dunno why but i really liked that top bass at :32

  • flam trips to a bass rim shot :D

  • i dont like the sound of the top bass it is to open he is rippin tho

  • Top bass always best =)

  • really good

  • the amount of power they have in there heads is godlike /bows.....

  • holy shit

  • My man on 5 is strugglin'

  • this is top notch. Bass drumming at its best.

  • This is what Sean Mac does to basslines.... he taught my HS bassline for 2 seasons and we went from crap to insane. I can only imagine having him as a corps tech.

  • bottom bass drum is the best

  • Comment removed

  • top bass aint screwin around.

  • amen

  • yeah i feel you. theres some great cover bands out there. ive been checking them out lately ever since they remaster the beatles albums. they sound great

  • what is that beginning part from? from :0 to :12?

  • The Cadets Drumline Feature from the same Parking Lot video tape. I just haven't posted it. Maybe I will soon. But I've been focusing more on the Beatles Tribute Bands.

  • @RSMRecordingInc Search "Vic Firth - The Cadets drumline 2008 - Drum Break In The Lot" Really good vid of it

  • That would be the drum break from 08

  • lol look at the 4th bass part at 1:21

  • there good just dont like their tuning and sizes of drums

  • i like their tuning but their sizes kinda look weird. haha

  • How big is their bass 1?

  • it looks like their first three are almost the same size

  • Yeah from this angle.

  • yep just the tuning different

  • Yeah that's what i thought.

  • 1 is a 20 inch

  • looks like 1-4 are the same size just tuned differently...

  • HB :]

  • hahahaha dat top bass IS hauling some booty dude. he barely stops moving the whole time

  • HAH, I agree with Brassbones09, #1 is moooving

  • DUT!

  • in the intro what and who is that playing

  • Comment removed

  • it was the cadets drumbreak for the same year

  • its their book for that year

  • umm bass 1-4 look the same size...

  • wha mallets do you use?...so i can buy my own tnx for help..

  • Vic Firth Corpmaster bass mallets.

  • Dang...that #1 is doin' work...

    sounds good all around though!

  • acually the ping noise is a metrnome

  • does anyone know how to make that "ping" sound on the bass drums?

  • Hitting the rim and the head at the same time...aka rim shot.

  • its a rim shot.

  • Comment removed

  • rim shot?? maybee

  • ?? yo idk if the angle of the camera but all the basses look the same lol

  • damn. first bass has it goin on.

  • the camera angle a 1:22 makes all of the drums look the same size

  • so good

  • lol i am a freshmann playing 1st bass and i hope i et to that good.

  • ughh the bass tuning is TOO tight....

  • lololol top - about 4th looks the same :p

  • Is bass 5 leaning back or is the head tilted?

  • the J bars are probably pushing the drum up too much.

  • They dont use J bars anymore. they have the new monoposto thingers.

  • ah true...

    forgot about those things!

  • are you... tone deaf?

  • oh okay :]

  • i dont even see any size difference till bass 4

  • yah i agree i think its jsut the cameras mike

  • i love the aggressiveness

  • Comment removed

  • ok please don't flame me for not knowing this, but it looks like bass1 through bass4 are all the same size. and bass5 is the only one that has a bigger drum

  • it's an illusion due to the way the camera is facing it. they are all different sizes though.

  • lol, they say "HB" as in, Holy Bass (there nickname)...

  • Joel is such a fucking beast....

  • man yeh they are. Are you even a bass drummer. They increase a ton as they go down in size

  • and the fact that they are playing in between brick buildings lol can't be the best sound lol

  • also man those basses sound too tin like. They aren't supposed to sound like that with foam on them like that trust i know because i am on a bass drum line and our drums have boom sound not ting sound.

  • thats how yamaha basses work. they sound like hitting cardboard from close up, and great from the box.

i dont think the brick wall and concrete helps either. listen at 1:50 how bad the echo is when the tech is clicking his sticks

  • thats why i love pearl drums

  • cause they sound great from the box and from up close lol. i feel ya. same thing with dynasty, except that the basses have to be cranked about an octive higher lol

  • yeah, dynasty has started making some good sounding drums. i only like the way their snares sound though. their tenors and basses are sounding better. but still not there yet.

i marched cadets the year we switched to yamaha drums and yamaha was trying to make their version of "pearl sounding" drums for us.

Burbank actaully had me play my prepared piece for the yamamha guys on a set of cavies 99, 00 cadets, and the new 01 "pearl" style yamaha tenors so they could hear the differences

  • we have some 06 dynastys at my high school, and they sound good, they just have to be tuned on the high end. Im marching blue stars this year, and the pearls they have sound AMAZING.

i was with the crossmen all they way through the audition process, and i think that the yamaha drums sounded exactly like they do in this video. but they sound good from far away, which is what really matters so its all good.

  • What also doesn't help is tuning a 20" bass to sound like an 18" bass. Although, that top drum looks closer to a 22". Either way, that's how Yamaha's birch basses sound. They do sound better from a distance, but they don't match Pearl's maple drums.

  • im sure it is just acoustics as well making them sound so tight. But, who cares, their sick.

  • true... also the concrete makes it worse

  • Can they crank those heads any tighter?

    They sound like tenors.

I miss the old bass sound (and the old snare sound, for that matter).

  • I like the deeper bass sound myself, But as far as snares go, I like them really tight.

  • i liked how fat the snares sounded last year or this year whatever.

  • Sounds great from the box.

  • this has been and always will be the best bass line in dci

  • blue knights?

and what about bluecoats this year?

  • wow. fail.

  • i agree this bassline is probably the best for 2008. bluecoats were great but not better than cadets.

  • lol at bass 5's drum head.

  • they cant be squeezing the mallets to hard.... look at the notes they are pumping out.

  • ...whatever haters. You can not deny they are ramming sweet beats at a high level.

another observation- it's subtle but right around 3:00 check Rudy's face.. not happy with sounds like a slight 'squishing' of notes. these guys are on it.

    FHNSAB. do it up HB!

  • they definitely have some awesome chops. they got some really nice rolls and splits and i'm amazed at how much 1st bass plays. but whatever the more the better!

  • Sick line! But what's up with the tuning? The drums sound like cardboard boxes.

  • Go Joel! Go Palmetto Percussion! The cadets rule.

  • wow ... love how b1 has to read like snare shit lol ... tap rolls/rolls are incredible .. runs are crazy ... stick heights are almost stick lows cuz of the extentioin ... mad chops basses!!!

  • BASS 5 ROCKS!!! anyone that can talk to me who has been in dci and played BD5 and jus drumline in general please talk with me im really intersted in doing this

  • where is josh and his bass 5? :[

  • he's there... playing bass... 5

  • yeah joel!!

  • wtf lol 2:09

  • Gorgeous Drums! Not to mention what's coming out of them.

  • this is why i love the cadets!! Amazing use of technique and perfect timing!! Absolutly Amazing! Good Luck to The 2008-2009 Holy NAme Cadets Drum Corp Under George Hopkins!!! Espically To The Drumline!!!

  • Their intervals are closer together than what Corps usually have for their Basslines.

Usually it's (from top to bottom); 18",20",24",28", and 32"

I BELIEVE Cadets' intervals are; 20,22,24,28,30. Don't quote me on it, though.

  • I'd be willing to bet you right, their bottom and 4 drum never really look as big as most corps. I would bet on 20,22,24,26,30 though, since the 4 drum just dosn't look 4 inches bigger then the 3rd.

  • ah ha! hadf to log in after viewing.. nice "HB" at the end.

    HB595

  • I agree on multiple levels. Normally is bass 3 up though, but Bass 5 is the loudest, biggest, and most important drum in the section (next to the center snare). I understand not doing anything really to complex because of the loose head, but I would like to see some bass 5 do more then play a unison, hit a quarter note, and then rest for 5 measures.

Oh well, I guess thats how they write now, each bass is just as important as each other though, but more action on 5 is great.

  • i know how that feels. played bass 5 last year... got like no notes even though i was one of the stronger players in my bass line =[

  • What up Docta? This is Zac from '07. You're BA man.

  • 1:30 is RIDICulous

  • 1:30 is RIDICULOUS indeed!!!!!! haha

  • that's what it looks like.. lol

  • this is godly fast

  • that guy tapping sucks at life.. its true

  • DAMN

  • Man that guy sure loves to tap :)

  • Oh my god, the ram in the beggining

  • Oh man I love their drums! When I saw them compete, I saw they changed blue, purple, orange, red, and it was crazy!! They're super good too!

  • im pretty sure those basses are 20, 22, 24, 26, 30.

im not certain on that though.

  • Yes theyare

  • r u sure???

  • is it just me or do all the basses look like their the same size. they all sound alike

  • Its because of shooting in 16:9 and not importing in that way. It distorts the video to look like this. Check out other clips. They are not the same size.

  • i marched with mel. she aged out in 07. and to my knowledge, she's not married. in fact -- she's not married.
