I remember this scene. I've watched it time and again because it reminds me of what a true soap opera used to be......but Ellen Parker transcends this....when she spits "YOU SLEPT WITH MY HUSBAND!!" all of Guding Light came down with her. Killing Maureen Bauer in the aftermath of this sealed the fate of this show and if you want to blame the cancellations of most other soaps (As The World Turns especially), you need only see Jill Farren Phelps' name at the head of the list.
riveting - one of the best scenes in soap ever when Maureen talks with Lillian! Affairs happen all the time on soaps but it was so powerful because it was Ed/Maureen.
i remember all this but didnt know phelps farren was in charge damn we see how gh is right now, how the hell do these talentless hacks keep getting a chance to ruin other shows
I've started watching GL in 1988 and this is still the most powerful scene that the show has ever done. The show has never been the same since they killed of Maureen.
These scenes were devastating at the time, even moreso when they were stupid enough to kill Maureen. That idiot Phelps actually wanted to pair Ed and Lillian up after this, if I remember correctly. The backlash was too ugly for her to consider it. I never forgave Ed or Lillian for this storyline.
"You have reduced us to this ridiculous suburban joke and I will NEVER forgive you for this!" ... Great writing, and a stupendous performance from Ellen Parker, albeit gut-wrenching to watch.
Jill Farren Phelps wrecks every soap she produces. On GL, she fired Mindy #2 and Maureen, and got Beverly McKinsey to walk out in disgust. On ANOTHER WORLD, she killed off another popular character (Frankie) and drove away viewers; AW was cancelled not long after. And every other soap she's run seems to lose ratings while she's in charge. With that track record, who keeps hiring her, and why??
This was the begining of Ms. Phelp's undoing at Guiding Light. She got so much negative press that Ellen Parker was the toast of the talk show circuit. Ms. Phelp's knew her days were numbered when Beverly McKinsey did her last scene before her vacation, and never returned after repeated warnings she wasn't happy. Ms Phelp's reputation has never fully recovered.
Poor Maureen!! Maureen was so reserved at first, the perfect lady. Then BAM - like a volcano erupting! All the years that writers gave stories to others and did not think Ellen Parker could take on a role that had such depth...she proved them wrong!!!!! Damn that Jill Farren Phelps for killing off Maureen Bauer! Guiding Light's heart was lost when Maureen Bauer was allowed to die!
Now this is what a soap looks like!
