I tend to believe the magic side, because if its NOT magic, then how on earth do you get an explanation for the magic fights that we CLEARLY were shown. (don't even mantion that Schrodinger's cat crap) Unless at the end someone says "and this proves that everyone in and connected to the ushiromiya family is psychotic". That and without magic, higurashi is a major mindfuck, as it has been almost outright stated that Higurashi=Bern vs. Lambda.

ryuukishi07's Visual Novels always look like this with the initial releases. It's so he can get the stories out as fast as possible (remember, he sometimes only has as short as 4 months to get it out, since he releases them every Comiket). Higurashi no naku koro ni looked the same exact way. They'll probably update it with more anime-style character models with the anime voices and remastered/ more music.
