Leija lost this fight but he ended up beating Nelson two years later in the last of their four fights and compiling 2-1-1 record against The Professor. He doesn't get much credit but Leija was a terrific little fighter.
Funny thing about referee stoppages is that you can tell by the amount of resistance the fighter can/will put up to the call. Leija knew it was the right call, he was 1 punch from being KO'd.
@Adrianmc78 yeah he was done, and he knew it. He wasn't throwing back and he was wobbling around on week legs. This was the right call not just because of the cut but because of the beating he was taking.
Richard Steele belongs in the amatuers refereeing fights. He too safety concious. However I seriously doubt the outcome of this fight was going to be anything other than a Nelson victory. Leija was weakening and badly cut. Actually Steele really saved him from further damage. I just like seeing fighters go out on their backs.
@bluemoonomen You like seeing fighters go out on their backs? I seen a kid in approximately '97 get killed in the ring. He was a nice kid, in college from the state capital. Ever since then I hope whoever I'm going for wins by body shot.
@TheMexHurricane yes, I like seeing fighters go out on their backs, i.e. I don't like quick stoppages. I didn't say I like to see fighters get killed. Steele has a habit in my opinion of stopping fights too quickly. It's a brutal sport: some say it should be abolished. All I know is as long as its legal I want to see throwdowns.
Leija was catching leather and losing the fight, but he had his legs underneath him and was still throwing back. And Leija had beaten Nelson in their last fight...more than enough proof that he could have rallied in the later rounds.
The cut? It looked bad, but was it hindering Leija's ability to fight? No. I get so sick of refs calling off fights for no better reason than they're squeamish at the sight of blood.
To watch Azumah fight was, always an exciting bout. Fast and furious!

@Kedbuka He was, especially considering all of the things he had working against him, like paper thin skin and a pretty light punch.

Typical lousy call by Steele.
