  • Loved this segment!

  • This is from the onion, is it a parody or just a normal show because I find this interesting

  • Damn, now I want to see The Seventh Continent, sounds like a brilliant plot.

  • Didn't someone remake Last House on the Left???

  • Grave of the Fireflies makes Irreversible look like Shrek

  • Maybe they should have just said "Too Painful to watch Twice".

  • A Serbian Film. I didn't wana watch it again, but I just had to.

  • shit, seeing that monica chick goin' "ooh-ohhh-ooh!" alot...

too painful to watch twice.... c'mon dude, just admit it... you too cheap to pay for the playboy channel.

  • Iron Eagle...

  • Batman and Robin was a pretty painful film to watch. A tremendous piece of shit that I will never watch a 2nd time.

  • A Serbian Film comes to mind.

  • @GoblinGirl

    And Salo.

  • I expected to see the film "Funny games" up there.

  • I would have put in I Am Sam.

I can never watch that movie again. Way to much.

  • You didn't have to show every scene from The Seventh Continent. It kinda sucks for those who haven't seen it.

  • @schoenapan yeah way to take a subtle movie that builds up to events slowly and to show the events, out of place that spoil the impact.

  • Gus Van Sant's Last Days was impossible to sit through. Just heroin addiction portrayed accurately. Not glamorized or even dramatized. Wasn't a very worthwhile watch, though.

  • Precious is pretty brutal to watch

  • I'd throw in Requiem for a Dream.

  • Hard Candy was very painful to watch. I only saw it once and thats enough for me lol

  • Grave of the Fireflies.

  • memento is just like irreversible

  • Space Odyssey 2001; because it's so freakin boring and long

  • Unsolicited advice: I highly recommend that you guys join your local Toastmasters. They'll help you work on your delivery. It's currently a bit lifeless. Also, there's some tidbits in there we don't need to know. It's not necessary to let us know that you actually did watch these movies more than once. Just lie or leave that information out. There's more to say, but I'll run out of my character count. The good folks at Toastmasters can really help out.

  • Irreversible's rape scene is fucking painful to watch. I thought making a sex scene with Monica Bellucci look repulsive was impossible, but holy shit that movie proved me wrong.

  • Deliverance anybody?

  • Mine would be Grave of the Fireflies. Beautiful all around but it hurts watching it

  • The Pianist... very painful but an excellent film

  • And Martyrs, can't forget Martyrs... sometimes wish I could...

  • Before I even clicked on this, I knew Requiem for a Dream and Audition would get some sort of mention.

  • "Irreversible's" camera tricks are really something to watch, and Noe's visual effects are really out there. But yes, all of Noe's movies are really raw and provide some major taboos.

  • Man Bites Dog?

  • @Erilis666 That movie wasn't THAT bad.

  • How about The Ring?

Not so much painful as icky and morbid.

  • @cjwright79 you should watch Ringu, the original japanese one ^_-

  • Virgin Suicide

  • Just watched "Come and See" You'll have a hard time forgetting that one.

  • Requiem for a Dream really is too painful to watch twice. It sucked the first time I saw it, so why would I watch it again?

  • These are supposed to be great films? Or is this a satire of film review TV shows?

  • Jacob's Ladder, so depressing and creepy.

  • se7en ... most depressing film ever

  • @JazzHill lol you clearly haven't seen irreversible.

  • @TheGermandude2 :) I was so depressed after se7en that I'm wondering whether I should give that one a pass...

  • @JazzHill It's not as depressing as it is just fucking shocking lol i didn't consider se7en that bad and i still cant sit through the first 10 minutes of irreversible

  • Why does the miniature of this video looks like a woman gagged orally deep throat style?

  • @kfijatass err yeah i noticed that too

  • Grave of the Fireflies

Thats a good freaking movie!! Loved it first time, can't watch it again

  • I see that Requiem For A Dream is No. 1 there, definitely too horrendous to watch twice.

  • I never want to look at Keith Phipps twice.

  • How is cannibal holocaust not mentioned?

  • @Punkninja12 coz its not great. only painful.

  • @Punkninja12 that movie was just bad. Painful but not at all great.

  • @Punkninja12 that is not a "great" film. its not even good.

  • Audition wasn't painful at all. It was amazingly delicious. Then again, I'm a fan of that kind of subtle freak-out. Audition has to be one of my favourite movies ever and I'll never get enough of it.

  • no movie that is unwatchable the 2nd time is a great film because clearly, the film has neither longevity or subtext worth delving into. These movies are pretentious joyless garbage.

  • I'd say Cache is definitely worth a watch and really has that same property of juxtapositioning outbursts of violence with monotonous daily life in order to give them the extreme feeling of weight they should have. Not many movies have shocked me in the way that one sequence in it does and I don't really have a desire to watch it again.

  • Hanake's movies are too painful to watch Once. I'd honestly put them in the same category as I Spit on Your Grave: Its the psychological equivalent of shooting yourself in the foot (albeit hanakes films are well executed, which is just a way of saying you shot yourself in the foot with a fancy gun).

I understand why his movies were made, but it was irrisponsable for them to be advertized. People who "need to see" those kind of fims will find them by themselves.

  • 7th Continent is the most boring piece of shit ever filmed. Literally nothing happens for 90% of the movie, then everybody dies.

  • @0prahTV Exactly painfully boring

  • Damn, these are some of the most boring and non-telegenic guys I've ever seen.

  • Another Aronofsky film I'd recommend for this is The Fountain. He's kind of good at that sort of thing in general, though.

  • Hello, you forgot A Serbian film!

  • @SouthernOregonOrgani lol gay.

  • Black Swan did it for me. The hang nail shot was cringe-worthy.

  • Saving Private Ryan. Lord of the Flies.

  • Black Swan should be on here.

  • @Theriot6592 Except you have to see Black Swan more than once.

  • I just saw "enter the void"

    It was pretty sad

there were so many many sex scenes O_o

    lol

  • For me "The Fly" with Jeff Goldblum tops the list. Some honorable mentions are "American History X", "A Clockwork Orange", and "Grave of the Fireflies".

  • What about "Jack Ketchum's The Girl Next Door"?

  • Ah! When that guy even mentioned Irreversible, my stomach immediately contracted.

  • rape !!!!

  • 131 people are like..."last house on the left is my favorite movie!"

  • One word: TRAINSPOTTING. Why didn't that make the list?!?!

  • @SilentJ43 Trainspotting was on the list with creepy babies

  • WHY do i recognize the little girl from the 7th continent??

  • never, ever, ever will I watch Irreversible again. Such a double meaning - you can't unwatch something so painful and terrifying. There's a good reason for that.

  • Boys Don't Cry makes the list for me.

  • Did anyone else see that thumbnail and think it was two people hugging?

  • knew audition would be listed im just suprised it wasn't in the top 3 its really unsettling. Like when she serves him the vomit or cutting off his feet.

  • it's already been said, but "a serbian film" puts all of these movies to utter shame. incredibly well made movie, but i'm probably now subconsciously scarred until death because of it. probably.

  • That was fucking depressing

  • @Ifindthevids

Watch the news. Real life is fucking depressing. : / The value is in finding the good things which are priceless.

  • Antichrist

  • Could you guys be any bigger of nerds?

  • looks like these movies are simply shitty

  • @Kinkoyaburi Not true.....irreversible is one the of ten best films i have ever seen, really disturbing but absolutely nothing like anything you have ever seen.

  • I was rooting for you guys to go into Requiem for a Dream. that is one fucked up movie i cannot watch again. ugh too real

  • It's funny that the first two films on the More Great Films ... at the end are two of the films that I expected them to talk about during the episode. i.e. I saw the name of the episode and thought to myself "yep, Dancer in the Dark and Requiem for a Dream are what they were thinking".

  • Lol, I've seen Audition 9 time.

  • this is almost exactly like i spit on your grave but it was made first and the girl survives.

  • Seltzer and Friedberg make painful films to hear about.

  • Uttering Wes Craven's name alongside Noe and Haneke is downright blasphemy.

  • Eraserhead?

  • @28335 very nice choice

  • WATCHING THESE MOVIES TWICE HURTS SO GOOD

  • saw and hostel movies should be one here. trollface.jpg

  • @sinbysin666 oh geez lol. I'm now having flashbacks of Hostel.

  • Schindler's List didn't make the cut?

  • "Too painful to watch twice"

"I think we've all watched these movie more than once."

    Wait what?

  • @shagoosty

They work for the Onion. Leaving your soul in a storage depot for the term of one's employment is in the contract. They mean us innocent mortals will find it to painful to watch twice. ; )

  • @shagoosty it was explained pretty thoroughly

  • @foulbeershits It was a joke dude.

  • @shagoosty ...haha?

  • @shagoosty they did say they were dead inside...

  • for the guy at the end thats a horrible way to go

  • I feel sick.

  • Irreversible, a movie with a ten minute rape scene an opening credit sequence with audio manipulation that supposedly causes nausea, which runs backwards for no fucking reason at all. That should give you a reason why the other guy was looking at him funny and interrogating him about it. Then he says he watched it at least four times...

Any film by Chan-Wook Park might apply; Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance: That should be on here.

  • I am so glad Requiem for a Dream was top of the "More great films" list at the end of this video! I watched the whole thing expecting them to say it and was shocked when it didn't appear. But I understand they have referenced it in several other A.V. Club Inventory videos so I guess they don't wanna sound like a broken record. That film must be special on so many levels.

  • ALL THREE of these films are on Netflix instant queue right now. Netflix rulz.

  • @Tyleriscoolx2 Thanks for the tip mate.

  • Spoiler City

  • I see that Faygo bottle in the background! Red Pop, I do believe.

  • "yeah, the 'undisputed king' of great films too painful to watch twice isn't salo" - a fucking idiot

  • I don't get it.

  • Cutting moments. I dare you.

  • speaking of things that are too painful to watch twice...

  • Fellowship of the ring, it's good the first time, then you try to watch it again and it's just frodo complaining and walking the whole time

  • 2/3 of these they watched twice. wtf

  • Did they not remake a movie lately based on that first Wes Craven movie? for the record, my most painful movie was 'Cabin Boy', time wasted I'll never get back.

  • what about precious i walked in on my lady and sister watching it and just hearing their description of the movie made me not want to ever watch it

  • I love watching this, interesting points of view. But one thing I wonder, why the focus on horror and murder? Seems like mostly everything I've seen referenced is rather dark, save the Simpsons and Home Alone.

  • The Mist and Children of Men - Really well made films but wayyy to depressing to watch again.

  • wow, that a bunch of assholes

  • ric a dic a tick tock tick tock tick, ring, ring a ding ding ring a ding ding

  • You folks do interesting research ! Wild stuff I've never seen . Thanks for the dirty work. Really!

  • 'Requiem' is probably so painful, I haven't watched once yet.) As to Joan of Arc, it's not that painfull, although it's powerfull...

  • @dAvrilthebear requiem is amazing and very painful for some bc it will hit close to home for alot of people

  • That what way to painful to watch twice! In-fact I'm regretting watching it once.

  • that guy in glasses looks and talks like a fucking sick serial killer wanna be, but he is too much of a pussy to be one

  • Seventh Continent sounds like it would be horrific enough the first time...

  • @IcarusMoonsight Don't see it. The film has literally no redeeming value. No moral, nothing... just pure, unfiltered emotional trauma.

  • I might watch Trainspotting again one day but I'd need to work up to it.

  • Audition in that list huh... I kinda agree. I think I'd have to put Hostel and Antichrist on that list... and an American short film called Crackerjack that's about a sailor coming into port and looking for a fuck. That movie scarred my 10 year old brain for life.

  • Martyrs.

it's a horror movie, but takes the focus away from the grotesque and puts it on the suffering. Good luck.

  • Was Last House on the Left based on Ingmar Bergman's Virgin Spring?

  • Oldboy

  • You guys have a weird obsession with rape. Freakish idiots.

  • I really enjoy the AV club.*But i fucking hate keith philip's face. no good reason...

  • Comment removed

  • 2/3 didn't do films they thought 2 painful to watch twice.... i don't understand...

  • Wow I bought Irreversible when it first came out and I find myself explain to people how good it is if you can make it through the first half hour. I think this is a genius premise.

  • Two words: Srpski Film.

  • What about "Salo" or "The great feast" ??

  • The thumbnail for this is highly suggestive. I am disappoint.

  • Comment removed

  • Two more films that need to be on this list are:

    Eraserhead

Henry, the portrait of a serial killer

  • @paulbrown06 henry rocks wanted to watch it for years and finally saw it a few months ago!!

  • Downfall.

  • Totally disagree with Requiem.

  • The host looks like a Jeff Daniels wannabe/lookalike!!

  • I can't believe they didn't mention "The Fountain" I could not watch that movie again no matter how good it is.

  • @hihosh1 In my experience, the film is really really good the first time through, but then you watch it a second time and you realized "Wait a minute, this is only a decent film".

  • @JNacho7 I enjoy thinking movies, but The Fountain was good in the beginning though it kept going on and on.

  • If these guys included anime on their list who wants to bet they'd put Grave of the Fireflies on the list? Children being devastated by WWII anyone?

  • These guys can't be the writers for the Onion. At least, not when the Onion is funny. They're too boring and sad.

  • You should create a separate channel for these videos. They do not meet the standard of quality The Onion humor and should not appear in subscriptions.

  • If you look closely, you can see that the title of these videos begin with "A.V. Club Inventory:" This is the distinction you look for when choosing to watch the video in your subscription box or not.

heres a handy tip: if you don't like this series of The Onion, or feel that you will not enjoy it, chose not to click it and the video will not appear!

  • @joosbawks ...though I don't know about everyone else, but I've been getting a bug where videos that I click to delete from my homepage keep coming back up.

  • why can't they analyze more than 3 films? i would love it if they did more

  • Ahh yeah they showed the uh revenge hummer scene there at the end. Gruesome.

  • Is that a bottle of Faygo in the background?!

  • I'm going to start my own list.

It's called "Shows that should get their own channel".

AV Club is going to be #1

  • what the fuck was that at the end?!?!

  • I watched requiem for a dream two days in a row with different people

  • Requiem for a dream is probably my favorite movie. But I've never been able to watch it again. It's just too emotionally scarring. But if anyone hasen't seen it, watch it now.

  • the last house on the left is based on "The Virgin Spring" directed

    Ingmar Bergman...look it up

  • There's an unopened bottle of Faygo Redpop behind Keith! That makes me so happy, words can't even describe...

  • What about "A Serbian Film"??

  • Irreversible gave me one of the best boners of my life

  • all shit movies except maybe the 2nd

  • I sort of expected to see Dogville, Brilliant film, definately painfull to watch the repeated rape and inhuman treatment of the main character, made all the more painful by how quaint and nice the film begins.

Sets you up for a nice feel good movie, then smacks you in the head with peoples capacity for cruelty.

  • Michael Bay makes movies that are too painful to watch once
