Gus Van Sant's Last Days was impossible to sit through. Just heroin addiction portrayed accurately. Not glamorized or even dramatized. Wasn't a very worthwhile watch, though.
Unsolicited advice: I highly recommend that you guys join your local Toastmasters. They'll help you work on your delivery. It's currently a bit lifeless. Also, there's some tidbits in there we don't need to know. It's not necessary to let us know that you actually did watch these movies more than once. Just lie or leave that information out. There's more to say, but I'll run out of my character count. The good folks at Toastmasters can really help out.
Irreversible's rape scene is fucking painful to watch. I thought making a sex scene with Monica Bellucci look repulsive was impossible, but holy shit that movie proved me wrong.
"Irreversible's" camera tricks are really something to watch, and Noe's visual effects are really out there. But yes, all of Noe's movies are really raw and provide some major taboos.
@JazzHill It's not as depressing as it is just fucking shocking lol i didn't consider se7en that bad and i still cant sit through the first 10 minutes of irreversible
Audition wasn't painful at all. It was amazingly delicious. Then again, I'm a fan of that kind of subtle freak-out. Audition has to be one of my favourite movies ever and I'll never get enough of it.
no movie that is unwatchable the 2nd time is a great film because clearly, the film has neither longevity or subtext worth delving into. These movies are pretentious joyless garbage.
I'd say Cache is definitely worth a watch and really has that same property of juxtapositioning outbursts of violence with monotonous daily life in order to give them the extreme feeling of weight they should have. Not many movies have shocked me in the way that one sequence in it does and I don't really have a desire to watch it again.
Hanake's movies are too painful to watch Once. I'd honestly put them in the same category as I Spit on Your Grave: Its the psychological equivalent of shooting yourself in the foot (albeit hanakes films are well executed, which is just a way of saying you shot yourself in the foot with a fancy gun).
I understand why his movies were made, but it was irrisponsable for them to be advertized. People who "need to see" those kind of fims will find them by themselves.
For me "The Fly" with Jeff Goldblum tops the list. Some honorable mentions are "American History X", "A Clockwork Orange", and "Grave of the Fireflies".
never, ever, ever will I watch Irreversible again. Such a double meaning - you can't unwatch something so painful and terrifying. There's a good reason for that.
knew audition would be listed im just suprised it wasn't in the top 3 its really unsettling. Like when she serves him the vomit or cutting off his feet.
it's already been said, but "a serbian film" puts all of these movies to utter shame. incredibly well made movie, but i'm probably now subconsciously scarred until death because of it. probably.
@Kinkoyaburi Not true.....irreversible is one the of ten best films i have ever seen, really disturbing but absolutely nothing like anything you have ever seen.
It's funny that the first two films on the More Great Films ... at the end are two of the films that I expected them to talk about during the episode. i.e. I saw the name of the episode and thought to myself "yep, Dancer in the Dark and Requiem for a Dream are what they were thinking".
They work for the Onion. Leaving your soul in a storage depot for the term of one's employment is in the contract. They mean us innocent mortals will find it to painful to watch twice. ; )
Irreversible, a movie with a ten minute rape scene an opening credit sequence with audio manipulation that supposedly causes nausea, which runs backwards for no fucking reason at all. That should give you a reason why the other guy was looking at him funny and interrogating him about it. Then he says he watched it at least four times...
Any film by Chan-Wook Park might apply; Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance: That should be on here.
I am so glad Requiem for a Dream was top of the "More great films" list at the end of this video! I watched the whole thing expecting them to say it and was shocked when it didn't appear. But I understand they have referenced it in several other A.V. Club Inventory videos so I guess they don't wanna sound like a broken record. That film must be special on so many levels.
Did they not remake a movie lately based on that first Wes Craven movie? for the record, my most painful movie was 'Cabin Boy', time wasted I'll never get back.
I love watching this, interesting points of view. But one thing I wonder, why the focus on horror and murder? Seems like mostly everything I've seen referenced is rather dark, save the Simpsons and Home Alone.
Audition in that list huh... I kinda agree. I think I'd have to put Hostel and Antichrist on that list... and an American short film called Crackerjack that's about a sailor coming into port and looking for a fuck. That movie scarred my 10 year old brain for life.
Wow I bought Irreversible when it first came out and I find myself explain to people how good it is if you can make it through the first half hour. I think this is a genius premise.
@hihosh1 In my experience, the film is really really good the first time through, but then you watch it a second time and you realized "Wait a minute, this is only a decent film".
You should create a separate channel for these videos. They do not meet the standard of quality The Onion humor and should not appear in subscriptions.
If you look closely, you can see that the title of these videos begin with "A.V. Club Inventory:" This is the distinction you look for when choosing to watch the video in your subscription box or not.
