I'm sure you've already picked one but if not take a look at the Fujifilm S1000fd. It's CDN$299 so it should be close to being under the price you're after.
I would suggest lookng at the canon cameras, as well as the nikon coolpix lines. With what oyu wante though it sounds like the Nikon will be the better choice for you.
At electronics store where I work they have a camera called the Casio EX-S10BE and it seems to be sold out constantly. so I played with one and the menue is super easy to use. not a lot of buttons and quick at taking pictures.
My brother who uses high end film and digital SLR cameras says you should get a nikon or a cannon. He says HP tend to make good ones too. He says stay away from fuji film polaroid and other companies like that. Also you need to make sure that either A.) the company/ the camera have drivers for OSX or that it is a camera that OSX already supports via it's bult in drivers.
I have a sony cybershot and its the easiest camara i have ever had and i have had a whole lot of camaras, Nikon are good though if you dont get a sony, if you have the money get a nikon digital/slr
not sure but let me tell you what NOT to get. the sony cybershot. its awful. its touch screen & VERY CONFUSING. its a $400 camera that takes crappy pictures. do not get a sony!
I'd have to agree with other people on this one, the Panasonic DMC-TZ4S looks like a great buy at Amazon right now. I have two different Panasonic digital cameras, and they're great. I'd be very reluctant to choose any other brand. Good luck! You deserve a nice camera MelissaJenna because you're awesome!
Oh yes, and you'll want a good size SD card for those. I prefer cameras like Panasonic because they do use SD cards, which tend to be inexpensive, rather than something proprietary, which would be more costly. If you get an SD card make sure it is Class 6 so you can take advantage of the camera's speed. They have had great prices on those at Newegg, and I've seen free shipping too. And again, good luck!
I use a Cannon PowerShot SD1100 (Digital Elf) Its more camera than you'll ever need it snaps pretty fast and has a video feature. Its got tons of features and does lots of cool color swapping and such but is still incredibly simple for point and shoot. Nikon has a great line of cameras too, their screens are a bit bigger but i didn't think their interface was as intuitive as the Cannon. (I've had both over the years). My $0.02 Stay away from Kodak..... they're terrible!
About 2 or so years ago, I was in search of a camera with the same criteria. I purchased a Canon Powershot SD800IS Digital ELPH. The main reason I bought this camera was the wide angle 28mm lens. You can take pictures in tighter areas than most other cameras (usually 35mm).
But I would definitely recommend a Canon Powershot ELPH series camera. Take a look at them in the store!
all the cameras you'll find that are decent will have what you need.. the best for the price are the sony w-150.. has one of the fastest shutter lags and takes great pictures. 3200 iso (takes pics well in low light) can be found on sale for 180 or so. if you don't like the proprietary memory card the canon s790 does well as well.. both have large screens, personally the sony takes great shots and you'll be happy with it.. uber easy and just has a simple dial with pictures for the shooting modes
nikon coolpix is wonderful. I'm technology-challenged but the touch screen is the easiest thing ever and takes up almost the entire back of the camera. It's really fun to use.
Slim, big screen, rechargable battery, red-eye reduction, and all that is totally my camera... The Canon Digital Elph! :) Mine is the "SD630" one, but there are newer ones.. And the price is right too.
After you get a bunch of suggestions go to the Cnet website. There you can read more reviews AND you can do the side by side comparison with each camera you find interesting. Good luck.
HP makes a series of inexpensive, easy to use cameras that have all or most of the qualities you ask for.
I have a Photosmart R742. It maybe takes a second to focus and then take the photo, is slim (5/8"), has a 2 x 2 1/2 screen, 7 megapixel, but its battery must be removed to be recharged.
Mine is over a year old, so I'm sure they have improved, and I know they have 9-10MP cameras.
Hey Melissa, I have the Canon PowerShot SD750. I really recommend this camera because it has a fairly big screen, REALLY simple to use, relatively fast shutter speed, and it also an above average video quality. If you ever wanted to record something. Anyway hope this helps!
I don't know much about P&S (point and shoot) cameras because I have a DSLR but I would like to make a few points.
1. Don't let any one try to sell you a camera just because it has a certain megapixel resolution. It's really not that important unless you want to make poster size prints or if you're going to be cropping your image a lot.
2. Stay away from digital zoom - it's a gimmick. It's the same thing as cropping an image yet it's done in camera. Optical zoom is good and what you want.
One of the biggest selling point-and-shoot cameras is the Canon SD1100. In a leading non-photo magazine that's for consumers that I probably can't mention (initials CR) said it was one of the best. I have the precursor (SD1000) and love it. At a large website named after a long river in South America beginning with A., it is $156. Hope this helps!
i'm bit of a camera buff with all the gear so when my fiance needed a little thing that fit in her handbag i went off and did the research. Following all the same criteria as what you're setting, i decided on the Canon Ixus 80. It's a great little camera that takes great photos and great video too (not HD video though).
next on the list would have been a Lumix for similar money.
i have one, and there's so much you can do with it, and it's cheaper for a good camera, it's thin, takes quick pictures, i have one, best camera i've ever had.
Go with canon or nikon. Don't go for casio or any other company. Canon and nikon are camera companies- you won't be disappointed. Don't pick that new one that is all touch screen, it gets very irritating to not be able to control things quickly.
Go to Consumer Reports and look for digital cameras. You might have to go to your local library to see past editions :) I think you have to pay online for their information.
Another vote for the Canon PowerShot 8.0MP Digital Camera SD1100IS. Pretty much perfect for your needs. It's simple to use and affordable. Comes in a variety of colors and is stylish and functional at the same time.
your friend is right .. fuji makes good camera's .. that will take good pics.. it's a 12mp so you can crop photo's later and they will still look good. and it has 5x optical zoom ... that's what matters ... some say digital zoom .. that's no good at all trust me and your friend I have a fuji 8100 and I take lots of pictures at hockey games .. some from over 150ft away. send me a message if you would like me to send you a picture of what this camera can do or look me up on facebok jayson Moonie
Check out the Kodak Easyshare models. They are easy to use, have a large view screens and when you change settings text appears to explain what the setting will do. Fits in your pocket. Mine cost about $100 bucks. Plus it does those thing you don't care about. Very Cool!
Hey, MJ! Great videos! This past October, I was looking for a camera with about the same specs you mention. After trying out the latest Kodak and taking it back, I fell in love with my Canon SX110.
BTW, for any camera that takes an SD card, you can take pictures A LOT faster if you get a high speed memory card and turn off the preview function of your camera.
Since I recently was on the hunt for an upgrade myself, I'd be happy to share more information if you're interested.
Good point, ogier1, about the Lumix. Just played with it at BestBuy and not-so-sharp photos. Strange such a basic thing would be poor with a higher end pocket digital by Panasonic. -George
i got a Cybershot sony cam i love it 8.0 MP i think it is W-35 i think.. i'm not sure but if you like simplicity that's what i would go for and it cost me 200 bucks at the time which was when it came out now i'm sure it would go for like 150 bucks
Also, Kodak has some very good cameras. I just bought one, so I can't be sure if I like it or not just yet. If you want to have the option to shoot high definition video, you should definitely look at the Kodaks. They're reasonably priced.
If your looking for a comparison chart, look at Best Buy's website just to get an idea of what you want.
Then, to get the best deal, do a search on Amazon. Also, send an email to Chris Pirillo to see if he can hook you up with some coupons.
I would check out the new Nikon. I can't remember what the model is, but it's the one with the touch screen that is advertised by Ashton Kutcher. That camera looked pretty cool.
A 10X optimal can make a nice difference in the photos you can take at a distance. Stabilized helps with lower light conditions. 8MP has 2.5" display and 9MP has 3" display, both large enough on the Panasonic Lumix units.
Amazon is a good place to read reviews, as most professional write-ups are unreliable and pull too many punches. Many digitals have issues, and are much less reliable than I thought at first. Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ4K 8MP 10X optical, image stabilized, my lst choice so far to replace my older digital. $199 at Amazon. Excellent reviews by users.
it has a really easy interface, with image stabilization, face detection and the likes (i know you didnt need it but its cool to have) the screen is almost the entire back other than a few buttons and the scroll wheel, if you want fast pictures you can turn off the face detection and image stabilization and it takes pictures as fast as you can click which is good. Check it out i give it a 5/5 for under 200 dollars :D
Casio Exilim EX-Z9 PK. As a photographer, it's my favorite budget, consumer grade, compact camera. -8 Megapixels (good for the size) -About $100 -2.6" LCD (which is HUGE for its kind) -Lots of colors, sleek looking -Good battery life -Fits in your pocket -Turns on in less than a second -Simple user interface -Shoots instantaneously -Records video (youtube ready too) -A little internal memory
you used to actually be somebody on youtube, but then you got all racist with your politics and now you're a nobody. people like you shouldn't be allowed to breed.
I just bought the FUJI FILM J10. I like just about everything about the camera. Very simple to use, small, light, takes great pics. It also shots video, but the sound quality is its only downside. It is horrible. For pictures though its great. I paid something like $125. at Walmat. I would recommend it. P.S. love your vids, keep-em coming:-)
Canon are the way to go. . . i know they have good deals. . and the quality is beautiful. . and u don't even need to get the " newest " one. . for the stadards ur looking for. . . i'll check up on a few brands. . & list them
I'm a Canon fanboy, so I'm gonna have to go with the Digital Elph series. Just pick whichever of the Digital Elphs that fit your budget. I have an SD300 that I bought over three years ago and still love (and I'm an avid amateur photographer).
Usually canon cameras are the BEST They have large screens EXCELLENT quality in ANY light and very simple menu... even my dad figured out how to use it. but test out the canon sd880.
I thingk you'd be better off shopping around and trying them out yourself. Take everyone's suggestions into consisderation but remember that everyone has their prefered camera features that made them chose that camera... and some are just die-hard fan of the brand-name gadgets.
BTW, depending on camera settings, camera may have some shutter delay, specially when used in a limited lighting condition without a flash. Night mode usually does this because it needs time to get the right exposure.
MJ, pretty much all of Digital cameras today have those features that you mentioned. Canon and Kodak cameras have better picture quality than others, IMHO. Kodak has a docking station where you can easily download or print out pictures... likewise, Canon has printers that can print out pictures directly from camera without remiving SD/MS/CF cards and downloading it to pc.
I have a Canon they are good but the one I have is kind of big so im not to sure about one you can get that can fit in your pocket. Good luck with your search there really are tons of camera out there,
I have a Canon Powershot that works really well for basic stuff. I used it in Colorado this summer on vacation and it took incredible pics of scenery and action as well as taking decent video.
I have a Kodak too. The technology in it gets old fast. And the form factor always shows its age within a few years. You can tell it's old by looking at it.
I have a Casio Exilim. it's good it's about $200. I like it alot and i film my videos with it and it's generally easy to use (it also has an easy mode if you need something easier)
I actually really like having regular batteries - that way if my battery runs out, replacements are readily available, instead of having to wait for the rechargeable to be ready. I would recommend rethinking that requirement.
or you could buy two sets of rechargeable batteries an have one set charged on stand by. if u just get normal batteries ur just wasting a whole lot of money
I have a Canon PowerShot SX100 IS, which I absolutely love - I added up the cost of the second battery compared to the # of times I've had to replace my batteries, and I haven't used half the price of the rechargeable. I've had my camera since June.
I agree with you, sbconle. I ADORE my Power Shot SX110 IS, which takes AA batteries. At first, having a rechargeable battery was one of my requirements, also, but I purchased a rechargable battery kit that charges the AA batteries in less than 15 minutes, and I couldn't be happier. The camera was 250 DOLLARS in October, and I never have to worry about my camera running out of juice.
lol yeah I know what you mean about big cameras. I currently have a Kodak Easy Share DX-7630 which is 6 megapixel. It still does take great pictures but it is bulky. I just recently bought a JVC Everio GV-MG230 digital HDD video camera and I know it takes great pics too as well as video! Anyway, just want to say that your awesome! ;-) lol
I got a Pentax Optio for my wife last summer, she loves it. Most of the back is a big screen, 2 buttons on top, pwr and shoot, has a zoom. If she can use it, anybody can, takes a nice picture. I use a real camera with lots of buttons myself...
If you ever didn't get your camera.
Today best small cameras are : Fuji Finepix F200EXR, Panasonic DMC-FX40 or 48, Canon Powershot SD 880 IS or Ixus 870 IS.

You look like you're in the market for a cell that's a sharp camera, but more important takes GREAT video.
Perhaps GREAT video in such a unit is not yet out.
The combo together is SLIM.
The price for cell contracts that also bundle BLOGGING/YOUTUBING videos/pictures should grab.
Perhaps video capture "Megapixels comparison" should be final selling point:
"How many MPs is enough for first consideration of video capture GOOD ENOUGH?"

it has a really easy interface, with image stabilization, face detection and the likes (i know you didnt need it but its cool to have) the screen is almost the entire back other than a few buttons and the scroll wheel, if you want fast pictures you can turn off the face detection and image stabilization and it takes pictures as fast as you can click which is good. Check it out i give it a 5/5 for under 200 dollars :D

I'm a Canon fanboy, so I'm gonna have to go with the Digital Elph series. Just pick whichever of the Digital Elphs that fit your budget. I have an SD300 that I bought over three years ago and still love (and I'm an avid amateur photographer).

Usually canon cameras are the BEST They have large screens EXCELLENT quality in ANY light and very simple menu... even my dad figured out how to use it. but test out the canon sd880.

google : cnet+digital cameras and you will find in depth reviews and a perfect camera for you!

Night mode usually does this because it needs time to get the right exposure.

go to CNET for chart comparison of cameras. Canon powershot is the best. YOu do not need anything greater than 7-8 megapixel resolution.

I seen that you toned down your accesories
Drav1212 3 years ago
MJ, pretty much all of Digital cameras today have those features that you mentioned. Canon and Kodak cameras have better picture quality than others, IMHO. Kodak has a docking station where you can easily download or print out pictures... likewise, Canon has printers that can print out pictures directly from camera without remiving SD/MS/CF cards and downloading it to pc.

I have a Canon they are good but the one I have is kind of big so im not to sure about one you can get that can fit in your pocket. Good luck with your search there really are tons of camera out there,

I have an older Canon Powershot that has served well so far. Bit limited on video but I'm not ready to replace it yet.

I have a Canon Powershot that works really well for basic stuff. I used it in Colorado this summer on vacation and it took incredible pics of scenery and action as well as taking decent video.

Don't get a kodak. All the ones I had were bad. I have a Canon PowerShot SD880 IS. Its a really good one.

I have a Kodak too. The technology in it gets old fast. And the form factor always shows its age within a few years. You can tell it's old by looking at it.

I have a Casio Exilim. it's good it's about $200. I like it alot and i film my videos with it and it's generally easy to use (it also has an easy mode if you need something easier)
sopeauh 3 years ago
I have a couple of people I know who also have that. What is this Youtube video capture setting it has?
ACTORDAVIDTRAN 3 years ago
what do you mean?
umm.. it records in avi so you can upload it directly from the camera
sopeauh 3 years ago
On the website it talks about a Youtube video mode.
ACTORDAVIDTRAN 3 years ago
basically it means it can record video and you can upload straight from your camera with sound and all.

I actually really like having regular batteries - that way if my battery runs out, replacements are readily available, instead of having to wait for the rechargeable to be ready. I would recommend rethinking that requirement.
sbconle 3 years ago
or you could buy two sets of rechargeable batteries an have one set charged on stand by. if u just get normal batteries ur just wasting a whole lot of money

I have a Canon PowerShot SX100 IS, which I absolutely love - I added up the cost of the second battery compared to the # of times I've had to replace my batteries, and I haven't used half the price of the rechargeable. I've had my camera since June.
sbconle 3 years ago
I agree with you, sbconle. I ADORE my Power Shot SX110 IS, which takes AA batteries. At first, having a rechargeable battery was one of my requirements, also, but I purchased a rechargable battery kit that charges the AA batteries in less than 15 minutes, and I couldn't be happier. The camera was 250 DOLLARS in October, and I never have to worry about my camera running out of juice.

you should get that flip camera that everyone got at the youtube gathering. (i just check the flip website after typin that) flip mino HD $229.99

lol yeah I know what you mean about big cameras.
