This version of the story was relayed to me years ago when I was a kid, visiting Batsto Village, and talking with one of the Park officials working there. Letting go of all the mythology, and supernatural lore that surrounds this legend, the kangaroo scenario sounds most plausible.As far as missing and mutilated livestock is concerned,the Pines had lots of wolves and black bears back then.The reports blamed the devil after people started seeing the kangaroo hopping around.

The Jersey Devil was just a kangaroo brought over here way back when. The ship captain who brought it back from Australia while trading goods, was an alcoholic. He kept it chained up in a shed and beat it bloody when drinking. One night it escaped, or he let it loose. People around these parts never saw an animal like this, let alone one horribly disfigured and scarred from the beatings. To them it was a devil, and the Leeds became a convenient scapegoat,being the black sheep of the area.

None of us had any idea, the road we were on could barley even be called a road, it was just a long narrow trail of dirt and rocks. The trail had nothing of interest on it either, it had a few old deserted houses and things like that but nothing of any reason for anyone to be on it (other then hunting a devil of course ;) ).

The best tip I can give is always be level headed when in the middle of a paranormal investigation, never let your emotions get the best of you. Always look to explain and debunk any and all paranormal activity you may encounter, because something that seems paranormal may be completely the opposite if you come in with the right mind set. A little motto I go by is just because you can't explain it, doesn't make it paranormal.

Yes I have. A lot of the sightings around that era happened in the town I was living in at the time, Burlington, NJ. There have been actually a rare few reports of encounters with what people believe might be the Jersey Devil over the past two years. Nothing as of yet for 2009.
