  • Darwin wrote another book called 'the fall of man' in which he sowed the seeds of eugenics.

in this book darwin himself who suggested that rich people breed selectively to keep their DNA from being polluted with the DNA of the rest of us lowly cattle.

evolution is great, but darwin was also the grandfather of the idea of racial hygiene, so i'm not sure about celebrating this man, considering the followers of his ideas who were hanged at Nuremberg.

  • Randi is one of my heros

  • Comment removed

  • We need a Randi day :)

  • @MrMohjong Yea...how 'bout Randi month (like February to replace Black History Month). Of course, the media these days makes BHM lasting 'til summer.

  • i wonder if there is going to be a darwin look-a-like contest; it's gonna be hard to decide between randi and dan dennett:).

  • your awesome james randi!

  • Randi looks like Darwin lol.

Darwin day celebrations are a bit silly. I say this as an atheist who is also an evolutionary biologist :)

  • I live in Broward! I can't believe I missed this. Balls, balls, balls ;x

  • THANK YOU RANDI FOR OPENING MY EYES TO THE STUPIDITY OF CHRISTIANITY

Though I'm not a pure Athiest, (well I have no religion at all) because becomming certain of a single belief system leads us away from the Truth besides. I believe that there could be unseen phenomena that we arn't sure of.

You have shown me the extent of Science's application in reaching towards the truth.

    THANKS!

  • @WathCharmedOnline

To be an Atheist is to lack belief in any deity. If you lack belief in any deity, you are an Atheist.

To lack belief is not the same thing as to disbelieve, although they are often conflated by people who do not understand the distinction. For example you may not believe in unicorns and in fact state "I do not believe in Unicorns" yet that is not to say that you believe it is impossible that could unicorns exist, they are two distinctly different things.

  • @moyga what you just described is someone who is agnostic. Atheism is the belief that there is NO god. don't go correcting people with incorrect information.

  • Comment removed

  • @moyga no, I am sorry, but you are mistaken. The definition of atheist is: "Someone who denies the existence of god" which is also known as, someone who believes there is no god. The definition of agnostics is: "someone who is doubtful or noncommittal about something " you can not be an 'agnostic atheist' as you described above because it is contradictory. atheist = 100% there is no god, agnostic = there is a chance that there may be a god. look it up your self if you don't believe me.

  • That is a common misconception. Do you get your information from the internet?

I get my information from sources that are actually authoritative and reliable.

I am a Philosophy major, I study epistemology, formal logic and critical thinking amongst other things. I'm also the promotions officer for my universities Atheist society. I have read widely on the subject. I know the difference. Even the famous new Atheists such as Hitchens and Dawkins do not claim to know that God does not exist.

  • @moyga I don't care where you get you get your information from, the definition is the definition. just because your a philosophy major doesn't mean you know what you are talking about, because you obviously do not. I don't care if you want to be atheist, just understand what it means before you start talking about it. By definition, atheism means that you believe there is no god. that is it, if you don't believe that, then you are not atheist.

  • @tinlab

Sigh such arrogance based on such little research. I study this at university, I have done sooo much research and you do a google search and you think you are infallible. You are wrong about the definitions. Both of those words are latin and if you break them down this is what they literally mean:

    Athiesm:

    'A' (without or lack of)

'Theism' (belief in God or a deity)

    Agnosticism:

    'A' (without or lack of)

    'Gnosticism' (knowledge)

  • @tinlab

By your wrong definition of Atheism, Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens wouldn't be atheists because they do not claim to know that God does not exist. Re-tar-ded. Go and take a critical thinking unit.

  • @moyga LOL, you can't fight the definition. If they do not claim that god does not exist, then they are not atheist, they are agnostic. I'm sorry that you can't understand the difference, but those are the real definitions. if 'Richard Dawkins' and 'Christopher Hitchens' don't claim that god doesn't exist, then they are not atheist. I don't understand why you cant rap the definition of atheism around your head.

  • @tinlab

Ok now I think you are just a troll.

You are wrong about the definitions. Those are NOT the definitions. I could get philosophy professors to second that.

You can be wrong if you wan't I don't care. I just broke the words down for you in latin.

  • @moyga rofl what ever, believe what you want even if your wrong. i don't really care. you're just wrong. it doesn't even matter, believe whatever you want.

  • @tinlab /golfclap

  • @moyga "To be fair & balanced", the internet info is a good deal better than much of the info fr/ tv & politicians & church's. One has to admit that they fool a good deal of dumb asses. That is, ones short on common sense.

  • @tinlab

So I would direct your own advise back at you. Considering it appears you don't understand the distinction between disbelief and lack of belief or agnosticism and atheism, yet alone basic concepts such as the burden of proof, necessary and sufficient conditions and the way induction works.

  • @WatchCharmedOnline

Also in regard to you saying "I believe that there could be unseen phenomena that we arn't sure of."

I strongly suggest you watch the video by "QualiaSoup" featured on my youtube page about open mindedness, I think you will find it very helpful.

  • @WatchCharmedOnline The word Science was almost never used in the 18th century, but rather the term: Natural Philosophy. Darwin is and was a natural philosopher, and his father Erasmus Darwin was a founding member the Lunar Society, a society who only met on Full moon. The Lunar society was accused of unregulated empiricism, 'scientific dictatorship'. You might not believe in the important of Magick symbolism, they they sure did.

  • is it just me but are the christians spewing their hatred in this site just legendary in their stupidity? mr mildward here, for example, is an outright racist to begin with. funny religion of peace they got.

  • Good video! Do you think there could be a mathematical base for evolution?

  • Spirituality is essential for

    everyone. I believe Randi

    is just trying to understand

    it's essence.

  • Because the enslavement of the mind is just as dangerous as enslavement of the body. Perhaps more so.

  • paranoid much?

  • Every time I hear someone say that humans evolved from chimps, or that there's never been a "missing link" found, or that evolution is "just a theory", I feel it's my obligation to correct them, even if they won't listen because they're idiots. Far too many people (Americans especially) have incredibly little knowledge of science, and if I can educate even one person, I've done a little good for the world.

  • lol

Oh fuck, you're serious. Let me laugh harder.

    LOL

  • There are no 'stages' of evolution. You've just shown that you have no clue what you're talking about. Evolution isn't improvement, it's change in a population; every single fossil is a "transition", and every single life form changes their species by either contributing or not contributing their genetics.

I bet you think human intelligence makes us "more evolved" than algae, or that psychic powers are our destiny. You're either an idiot, a troll, or both. Your racial slur suggests the last.

  • I can't believe I missed Darwin Day...fuck!

  • Go Randi! <3

  • @jasonmildward34

    Satan only blinds the religious.

If wisdom and truth is God, then Satan is 2000 year old religious mythological dogma that's been interpreted more than 31,000 different ways. (yes, there's that many denominations of Christianity who can't agree on what the bible says)

Science is not blind, it seeks the truth. Those who think the bible is written by or contains God are the blind ones.

  • Has he done any bits on kinesiology?

  • man I spent the whole day at Disneyland and forgot it was Darwin day until half-way through the day. I saw Abraham Lincoln's animatronic (with whom Darwin shares the same birthday). Disney should have an animatronic for Darwin as well.

  • WOOOO!. GO Darwin! I'n Drunkerr than New Yearss!

  • Happy Darwin Day

  • James Randi looks like Darwin.

  • @SivakAurak I've often thought that.

  • I thought this as well.

  • I celebrated DD with my Biology students today, showing a wonderful biography and many guest commentators like Richard Dawkins and others, narrated by Donald Sutherland. It was great. Oh ya, this happened at a public high school in the Southern USA. Darwin for the win.

Looking forward to tuning in tomorrow.

  • I don't think we need a darwin day here in sweden :P

  • I want to touch the top of your head.

    Darwin FTW.

  • Go darwin! :D

  • lol.

Darwin day in 2010? Come on.

  • when did DARWIN die?

  • Glad you're getting better Randi. You're now even more of a walking talking advertisement for the effectiveness of rational science based medicine.

  • I am extremely happy to see that James Randi is getting strong again. It seems that "Big Pharma" and the "Medical Mafia" have not killed him, in spite of what alternologists and more specifically the homeoquacks want their gullible followers to believe.

  • Wish I could be there in person.

  • "Two hundred and first" means 200.1st which doesn't make any sense.

  • Darwin day is also a good time to remember how full of shit creationists are, so it's a joyful event all around.

  • james randi looks like he could be darwins twin.

  • @lhatebobsaget1989

"james randi looks like he could be darwins twin."

Interesting thought, seeing that secret societies and the occult always run in families, just check any freemason book, presidency lineage, royal lineage, etc.

And for anyone who has done his research, knows that Darwin was heavily involved with the occult. But I guess most here haven't done their research, history is a bitch, and it's in heat! :P

  • Evolution is not a religion.

Religion is founded on faith. Theists believe they already hold the answers to the unexplained, before even attempting to pursue it rationally. Religion has adopted a "Why bother, God did it" philosophy.

Science on the other hand is founded on rigorous research and non-biased experimentation. A true scientist doesn't conduct experiments with a biased approach, creating false positives like religion does. They allow the truth to speak for itself.

    Silly theists.

  • @Pepsifx357 Whats your definition of religion?

  • A cult following of believers with an agenda.

  • There is your problem..

"a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, esp. when considered as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs."

Evolution says nothing of the cause or nature of the universe and certainly does not invoke superhuman agencies to explain anything, it also says nothing about morality or its demise.

  • To imply evolution is a religion is to redefine the word religion.

    Fail.

  • @ Scanini

Yep, Religion is based on faith. All fields of science are based on discarding faith and trying to back up what they say with testable and/or observable data.

  • @Pepsifx357, "I cannot imagine a God who rewards and punishes the objects of his creation, whose purposes are modeled after our own -- a God, in short, who is but a reflection of human frailty. Neither can I believe that the individual survives the death of his body, although feeble souls harbor such thoughts through fear or ridiculous egotisms."

(Albert Einstein, 19 April 1955) I guess you have a FEEBLE soul.

  • Wow, someone failed their science class, lol. The theory of evolution has more evidence and science behind it than the theory of gravity.

  • @Pepsifx357 By saying "Religion of evolution" your using the word religion in a derisory way, i agree calling something a religion makes it bad but it surprises me you would...

  • @Scanini (and others)

This video has the exact same effect on me than the scene in the 1988 John Carpenter movie where he's in the store and sees a politician/president on TV that looks like an alien/skeleton (because of the glasses the guy is wearing to allow him to see the illuminati/freemasons/conspiracy people/alien invaders/demons). He sees the guy, and says ironicly:

    "It figures."

I have the EXACT same feeling after seeing this video by the 'oh so wise, never to be doubted' Mr. J.Randi

  • If I state that the sky is blue and then change my mind, does the sky change colour?

Even if it would, it is irellevant, since your statement about Darwin is false.

Although I find the survival of the fittest to be an elegant explanation, I wouldn't cling to it if facts pointed elsewhere. This is pretty much the opposite reaction to what happens in a religion. Some of the brightest minds of the day tried to refute Darwins idea and failed, and since then more and more proof has piled up.

  • The crazed, substance addled, schizophrenic transients in my neighborhood laugh pretty much constantly as well.. I'm wagering that they don't know shit about Evolutionary Theory either..

  • @Pepsifx357 And that you are so stupid that you don't realize that was a propaganda piece fabricated by his opponents and that he never really recanted on his death bed, just goes to show how easily brainwashed and misinformed you can be.

Also, even if Darwin had recanted, it would not make a difference, as Evolutionary Theory, like all field of science, does not depend on the authority of people, but on the evidence, unlike religions which has no evidence and only authority to brainwash

  • @mhrby1985 Likewise...

  • @Pepsifx357 That doesn't even make sense.

Enjoy your life, I hope for you that you one day will see reason, instead of continuing to live a life based on deceit, but I highly doubt it.

Feel very sorry for you, for the crime of brainwashing that was commited towards you.

  • Thank you.

  • Shit, I thought Darwin was the guy in the video.

    (J/K obviously)

  • LMAO

  • you look like charles darwin

  • Last year on my campus we had a lot of Darwin Day things going on. This year, there is nothing. I wish we would have put something on.

  • @rollinglibs101 Hitler was a christian, the roman catholic church held inquisitions, salem witch trials, slave trade.

    christians are evil

  • With pure atheism evil is not real..and free will is just a illusion..Atheism is the most daring of all dogmas

  • He is looking pretty healthy again.

  • We might as well affix Darwin's name to the Winter sostice celebration known as Christmas.

    We can call it Darmas.

  • Darwin's birthday is apparently February 12th, not the 13th...

  • Yes, but as that's a weekday, the events are being held on the nearest weekend. Just like holding a Halloween party on the nearest Saturday to 31 October. Until Darwin Day becomes a global holiday, that is...

  • Whoa! I can see the resemblance between Randi and Darwin.

  • @IrishNickO Haha, I can't help but think that's what he's going for. He can totally pull it off.

  • haha I was thinking the same thing. gotta love Randi.

  • I was going to say that!

  • "Charlie Darwin"? I prefer to call him "Chuck D".

  • natural selection doesn't work? wtf?

  • @james1x1x1x1 True, Darwin didn't know 150 years ago what we know today and made mistakes, but the evolution theory has yet be proven wrong after all this time. New finds, like DNA-research, only support evolution. I would regard Darwin a prophet and a god if 150 years ago he came up with all we know today and we will know in the future. But of course he was just a man, like Newton, Einstein, Hubble and you. So what did you contribute to science?

  • LOL!

  • Like saying Daimler's idea of a car was wrong as it didn't have an airbag.

  • "i would like think science is past him, he wrote that stuff over 100 years ago, and alot of is found to be not completely true these days"

    That isn't accurate.

Darwin's model was incomplete (no dna) but substantially the same as the core of today's theory of evolution. The modern theory is more refined and exhaustive, but virtually none of 'the origin of species' has been found incorrect in light of newer evidence.

  • Go Darwin!

  • Darwin is a highly overrated person. A lot of his ideas had already been expressed by others, most notably Russel Wallace.

  • Darwin discovered the ideas long before Wallace. Wallace just published first.

  • @rollinglibs101 Atheism is a religion like someone who doesn't collect stamps is considered a non-stamp collector. Makes a ton of sense doesn't it?

  • So all Christians have multiple faiths too. They have faith in the existence of Yahweh and faith in the non-existence of Thor, Shiva, Apollo, Ukko etc. Not to mention the faith one must have in all the possible things which one cannot disprove like faith in the non-existence of fairies, a fridge sized diamond 50 meters under my back garden and the famous teapot orbiting Saturn. It must be hard having enough faith to disbelieve all those things?

  • Atheism is just the lack of belief of any deity. Its not making a positive claim and therefore is not based on anything other than the lack of evidence for the positive claim put foward by theists. Atheists can and do believe in a wide array of "theories" there is no compulsory beliefs to adhere to. The only thing they share in common is the unbelief in god or gods.

  • @rollinglibs101 You just contradicted yourself like whoa...

"atheism ... is based on fact and not at all on faith" then "atheism is, in fact, based completely on theory and faith"

You may have a misguided idea of the definition of the term scientific theory.. maybe you should look it up if you've never had it explained to you. Atheism is in no way shape or form based on faith - with any stretch of the imagination. Faith requires willful ignorance to a lack of evidence. Think about that.

  • Incorrect. They are not "Impossible" to detect, they simply don't emit electromagnetic radiation. If they were impossible to detect, how do we know they exist?!

  • @TheFifthApes We don't. Technically we can never observe a black hole either, but lots of evidence points to their existence.

Dark Matter is the blanket term scientists use to describe the mass that *should* be there but we can't observe. We 'observe' it in the gravitational imbalances in planetary and other systems. Dark Energy is a similar beast.

Both are, at best, hypotheses—they would explain the other phenomena we see. They are supported by observed phenomena, whereas a Creator is not.

  • We do. We just don't know what it is yet. Observing the influence of an object by gravitational perturbation is not much different than inferring the existence of a planet around another star using the same method.

You're right, we can't directly observe a black hole with light, but we can with gravity, what's the difference?

We know dark matter and dark enegy exist to the same degree we know black holes exist, but we don't know what any of them are (Including black holes).

  • Correction, for God there is no evidence what so ever. Science may have ideas how certain things can be explained, but will always look for evidence to back up these ideas. If evidence can't be found, or contradicting evidence is discovered, then the science adapts. Religeon doesn't adapt, it is certain it is always correct... which has already been proven countless times to be not the case.

  • @rollinglibs101 there is no secondary evidence for god, at least not in the scientific sense you're implying.

  • I take it you're unaware of the cosmological constant, which we know is exactly .0000000000000000000007 ?

We have super computers that can MODEL THE UNIVERSE. You see, without dark matter, no one has ever been able to make a model that worked. Only when you fine tune this required force in the universe can you actually produce exactly what we see in reality.

So much for that scientific debunking escapade, huh? Hope you wore a mouth guard because the way you fell on your face looked painful.

  • @pokerslut530 Great post.... until you stooped to a fifth grade level and threw stones.

@rollinglibs101 The key difference: scientists believe their theories because they're based on tested observations. Indeed, they actively try and DISPROVE a theory, and when that fails they grudgingly accept that it *might* be true. In contrast, I could make up a hundred explanations for the attributes of God, each equally likely.

For more on this, read David Hume's "Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion."

  • I think your comparison is completely inaccurate. Dark matter is a placeholder name to describe whatever the source of a great deal of gravity for which we cannot account otherwise. Science really doesn't know what it is yet, and we are continually investigating. We know the gravity is out there because we can observe it. However, science doesn't "believe in" anything other than the need to explain this phenomenon.

  • rollinglibs101: You have greatly misunderstood the concepts of "science" and "theory". Science never believes. Science invariable says: "I have a theory. From this I made a model. As far as I can make out, so far, this model behaves in a way that is similar to what we can observe that the universe does".

Sometimes, science will come up with a theory and a model for behaviour we have not yet seen. Then it's *unconfimed*, until we observe something that validates or rejects it.

  • Clearly, Randi and Darwin are the same person! Notice how you never see the two in the same room together?

  • Yes... yes! It all makes sense now!

Do you think that Darwin used his knowledge of evolution to become immortal?

  • No; it's just that Galapagos finch drumsticks are anti-agathic. Who knew?

  • hey .. I said it first some month ago!

  • I'm glad his beard is coming back in after his cancer treatment!

  • You can say you're now "beardglad".

  • Is there a site where I can find all the days dedicated to various scientists?

It'd be nice to see if there's a Archimedes day.

  • Randi is a hero and a national treasure. I am proud to know the man, speak with him, and be able to listen to his wonderful stories. Darwin Day will ROCK!

  • Next up: Randi Day

  • has anyone else notesd how much jame ranmdi and dawin look like each other?

  • I have to wonder given the history of Darwin would he aprove of a day all he really wanted was the advancement of science and a quiet family life. If he's being celbrated as the father of modern biology then thats fine otherwise I just see it as bear baiting relgious people and most of them are so wraped up in their faith that they take the bait and end making a fool of themselves.

  • look at the event website and decide for yourself why this is happening

  • Wish I still lived in Boynton Beach. Well not really...

  • A day for Darwin? Will the Darwin Awards be there?

  • O_0 having imaginary friends at your age is lame bro.

  • @OVSMOKE I thought he was dead?

  • I wish you a successful and interesting event - for all involved, perhaps especially those who do not accept the truths of historical evolution.

  • he should grow out his beard more. i swear i though that picture of Darwin was supposed to be a picture of Randi.

  • @Renshato

    LOL

He looks like the wizard toy he had beside him on one of his videos.

  • During those last few seconds-the physical resemblance between Randi and Darwin just struck me.

    I've never noticed before.

Two great men who look a lot alike...

    Huh!

  • I don't get some people.

Evolution isn't matter of belief, its a fact.

  • people who normally believe in blind faith in a divine power, naturally expect that all other things in the world must also e based in blind faith and therefore just as vulnerable and easy to refute as their own religion. if we can decide not to believe in religion, hell they'll just decide not to believe in evolution. they just don't understand the difference between fact and fiction.

  • I'm still dumbstruck by the fact that days like these are even necessary. People rejecting observable reality because their storybook doesn't line up with it is the special kind of crazy we have insane asylums for, right?

  • i'll be there randi :]

  • randi(dot)org sounds like a swanky porn site.

.... bad thoughts- excuse me while I gouge out my short-term memory.

  • Ow thats nice it is being broadcasted. I wanted to be there, but i live in holland, and i cant buy a ticket so this a cool way of still being there!

  • In 200 years they'll be celebrating James Randi Day.

  • Will AronRA be there?

  • Yeah he made a video saying he was a speaker.

  • Oops, wrong day 2/13 is my b-day, not the 12th

  • Charles D. and myself were born on the same day!!! I feel even more special than before!!!

  • Wow! You're old.

  • James Randi is Charles Darwin reincarnated. Seriously, you guys look alike.

  • NO, HE AIN'T! The Amazing Randi is the living incarnation of Lucifer and my cult worships Him.

    Hail, Randifer!

  • James Randi is the man!!!

  • Excellent!

I am so amazed at dumb ppl who do not understand science.

  • I already marked my calendar 2/12/10 and I've been telling everyone about it (yup , I'm a huge nerd).

  • Darwin! the great emancipator! Freed humans from the design trap and made it possible to explain life rationally.

  • Pfft. You just endorse Darwin because you look like him.

  • ROTFLMAOPIMP
