@goldinacan You need to buy the Dick Cavett DVD boxset "Hollywood Greats" which has an entire and wonderful interview with Orson Welles in, he recounts this story and many others, including when he shared a table with Hitler. Also on the DVD are marvellous interviews with Bette Davic, Brando, Katie Hepburn amongs others.

The Joseph Cotten version is somewhat different. He said that Orson and he saw Mr Churchill. Orson went up to Churchill, who didn't respond. Later, Orson met Churchill swimming and spoke to him. When Cotten asked what Orson has said he said that he had apologized to Churchill for being "fresh". The next day, in front of the financiers (there were two in the Cotten story), Churchill makes his bow. Welles was notorious for his tall tales.
