This song is a good example of the hot electro-funk music that was being produced in the 80's. The problem with a lot of the R & B music being made today is: first; the same producers are working with most of the current acts. That's why the music all sounds the same, with no originality. Second: everyone wants to be a star without putting in the work and time that usually goes along with reaching stardom. Hence, there are hardly no real 'bands' today,  But the public should also demand better.
