I love Joes playin..but a friend of mine who is a very accomplished guitar player..says like many many guitarists joe uses phrazes and partial licks dated back to jimmy page....i dont recognize any of that...but I dont care..i just like what I hear when Joe plays...I still have my les paul that joe signed for me...way cool...
Where in the hell have I been............ where has Joe been -why dont the big media players let this guy out in the sunshine?! Damn, unbelievable !!!!
Joe is the best thing going in blues, despite he is a Les Paul player and I prefer Strats his playing is refreshingly new and different tones. Heard that cover of him doing Page's Tea for One??? Wow.
Joe is my favorite bluesman/rock guitarist and has been for some time now. He is a true genius and fabulous musician, not to mention the outstanding guitar work. The guy never misses a lick, never!!!!
@NKL5050 YOU ARE SO RIGHT! Of all my 40+ years as a drummer, Kenny is one of the tops, right up there with Steve Gadd, Keltner, Johnny Rabb, and any other fine chronometer to date.
I play and have for years. Bonamassa IS thee guitar players player. Honestly, there is Joe and then everyone else. He is that good! Blows my friggin mind. Thanks for cool vid.
Joe wishes he could write like Mayer... Mayer is on a different level, his band is better than any you will get Peno and Jordon are awesome.... Mayer has the songs and doesn't rip off eric johnson like joe does. It's all about song writing not just guitar playing.
@metaloutlander "Mayer has the songs and doesn't rip off eric johnson like joe does" no mayer cant rip Johnson .i suspect he doesn't have the ability to fly like eric and joe can.but he does rip 3 other guitarists of .and he is a poor man version of those 3 players .not to say hes bad player hes not .but dont come here pretending mayer is his own invention and joe is a just a clone .it a fucking nonsense.btw if john looked like gary moore he would not have sold 5% ass well as he did .
It's a shame that Bonamassa isn't as good looking as Mayer, otherwise his music might be more popular. Unfortunately, that's how the music industry works. Pretty people get the most exposure.
It's about the sound you give off, and how it applies to the population. Obviously looks DO matter, but if Bonamossa was playing radio songs, they would be on the radio. Simple as that...
As an artist you need to realize it's more then just slapping songs together. If you want radio play you have to apply to the people that listen to Radio. Which is a young, musically uneducated, popper audience.
@duhg599 yeah.. it's a real shame, but you're right. Look through youtube and there's so much amazing talent out there, most of which will go largely un-noticed. Them's the breaks. I only discovered Joe Bonamassa recently and was totally blown away!! very inspiring.
Absolutely Joe is a great player -I was responding to someone who said Wes was the best guitar player ever, he's one of the all time greats but the best? that's a personal opinion, the only best is whats best to the individual listener.
@ceopirates Great concert.I had never heard of Joe Bonamassa before. A friend of mine had a spare ticket for the concert.Boy was I delighted I went. The man is a wizard on the guitar. You wont be disappointed.

@takedat489 me too dude, i think of all the albums JM has John mayer trio try album was the best blues he has ever played but JB is better in the blues department for just a bit in my book.
@takedat489 I love both as guitar players, but I think on a certain level that it's unfair to compare the two. They have very sounds as far as blues go. In my opinion, Joe is a better technical player, but I'm more into Mayer's style of blues. It might be that Mayer plays almost exactly what I want to hear out of a blues guitarist. Mayer has done his best to keep old school blues alive, whereas Joe puts a new spin on it.
Compare, judge???? I have bene a player myself for longer than any here have lived, this guy is a REAL talent, a REAL talent. He is unique combining a lot of influences like we all do. I hear a lot of Page and Beck in there and he has his own twist to it, that's what we all do. This guy is a real treat to listen to, that Tea for One cover was astounding, Jimmy could not carry that tune live. Joe killed it. There is no more exciting thing going on in Blues since SRV.
What are you 12? I suppose the teenagers you listen to have achieved a master player status? Who under 40 these days can actually play?
Some kid with too much gain to cover up their lack of ability?
Bonamassa is a true talent. One of those gifted persons who is born with it.
Beck is like 60 now, can you outplay him or attain his level of noted material? I am playing better now than when I was 20 and a legend in my own mind. I am like the same age as Metalica and such, should we quit?
Carvin Tone , Yeah maybe YOU should quit . I'm 51 years old . Started taking lessons when I was 8 . Gave up playing at age 25 due to a serious injury . Picked it back up about 6 years ago . I play better now then I did way back then , primarily because I cannot read music any more . Am I as good as Beck , Bonamassa , Buddy Guy , BB King , or Gary More ? No of course not but I can hold my own jamming with most Blues bands .
I'm 52 and I really play heavy fusion these days. Blues is a little boring for me, except I like Bonamassas twist, it makes it interesting again. After 30 years of playing and experience improvising and creating spontaneous music I never try to copy anything unless its just a goof.
amen to that brother.... for me...joe is like all the good ol guitarists...he just plays the fucking thing...with good inspiring riffs...not obsessed with pedals or effects..or speed..... its just like we want it... RAW
Sure. Mayer's voice was always hard for me to get used to. I do think Bonnamassa has a new tone on the blues, I really like what he is doing. He did a cover of Page's Tea for One (see utube) just amazing. Pagey could not hold that song live as well as Joe took the time to work it out. Impressed me and I am a hard sell. I get a kick out of Joe's amp fetish, this guy has more vintage and good amps than I have ever seen. It's over board for my tastes. A good player can make anything sound good.
@CarvinTone while i agree with your statement, i think its pretty egotistical and presumptuous of you to say that you've been playing guitar longer than anyone on this site have lived... LOL. calm down man.
@CarvinTone My friend just told me about Joe and I am so psyched to see him this Nov in Fla. Your right, we've been starving for this since Stevie Ray Vaughn passed away.
@Tweekerhead Exactly Joe is totally unique. I have heard him compared to Eric Johnson, but he is just an assemblance of ALL his influences wrapped up into ONE Great BIG Innovative Genius.
yeah thats what my mate said ry cooder.but as someone comented earlier i tend to agree that for sure can hear influences of both jeff beck and gary moore in his playing.all the same top drawer playing
It sure sounds like he's working off of one of Ry Cooder's themes from the Crossroads movie, to me anyway. If you go and check our Ry's disc titled "Music by", you'll hear a lot of stuff these same melody lines. Joe certainly has good taste.
Might be, but Joe said himself that this is mainly taking the violin intro from a Django Reinheart song, hence the name, and the song inspired the name of the album: You and Me.
PS you can see one very responsible feature of Joe's presentation here - you really have to look because the lighting is what it is and the camera is what it is, but he's got the two
4 X 12's behind Plexiglas. The drums, keys and bass are too. This lets the stage amps run at whatever level Joe wants to make THE SOUND but tones everything back so the FOH mix can be just that, a proper MIX for the audience in the smaller halls. Quite unique.
To those who don't understand, blues is as much about FEEL as speed. This mans talent is so far off the scale, it's out of sight. In the years to come his name will be written next to the best of the best. Keep them jumpin' Joe
I believe he signed an exclusive deal with Gibson. When I saw him in a tiny bar in Winter Park (early 2007), he toured with a rolling case of 13 guitars. Not anymore. Three or four Gibsons at the show in August. They're good guitars, and Joe gets the most out of them, but I miss the range it gave him.
No matter what we all may say, this guys just leaves us smiling and happy having listened to him playing. And that is whats most important.I also bet thats exactly how Bonamassa wants us to feel...!
I know lots of people seem to be saying he sounds like every other Blues player, but that's the point...it's a very limiting genre, and he's getting crucified for showing he's got it all down and can be reverential to the greats? (Maybe he knows how to build a rep in the Biz more than y'all do.)
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
he´s great, but it seems like everything he´s playing i´ve heard before - jeff beck, eric johnson, billy gibbons, clapton... they´re all there! great playing and great tone, though...i don´t really know what to think of him - he´s great but i´ve heard it before...
Amazing...the last 5 or 6 dolts on here are actually dumping on this modern day "guitar god'. None of you here, or for that matter, anyone out there now, can touch this guy.
All the greats have 'stolen' from bluesmen of the past. But did we dump on them? Nooooo!
Just appreciate the guy for what he is....a frikkin' AMAZING player!!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Not so much dumping, just trying to educate. This guy is a good player, but he's not unique. He's not an innovator, nor composer nor stylist of any merit. Derek Trucks, if you need someone under the age of 40, is. Derek is unique and extremely talented. Joe is a great player who brings nothing new to the table. He's a talented yet vanilla player. Roy Buchanan for example, never had joe's speed or dexterity, but he was uniquely Roy. Get me now? Good. Class dismissed.
Unique and original are NOT synonyms for good. They may be...they may not be. Consider this, how long have cars been around? The point is this, in every classification of automobile there are subtle refinements that make them better year by year. I like that. Yes, I've heard these riffs before, but....not all in one show, with such execution and sound. Excellent vibrato, excellent speed, excellent phrasing. Original no, excellent yes. Derek Trucks unique? you're joking right, how old are you?
you said and anyone that doesnt hear it is the fuckin moron for not listening to the originals. Joe's a great mimic, no doubt. The guy can play, trouble is he has nothing 'his' or to add to the blues. At any given time he's copying Gibbons, Beck, Johnson, Clapton or even SRV - but not like THEY copied their heroes - they stirred the pot and made it their own. Joe is the world's greatest bar band guitarist, something to be proud of. But not RnR HOF material, no.
Joe is great but he is no was near the pure artisrty of Jeff Beck. A Strat in Jeff's hands is pure unadilterated genius. Look at this way, If Jimi was a bluesman from another planet, Beck is Django with a Strat (wammy bar included) and a Marshall cranked way up. So there you are. So, like Picasso said "great artists steal"
Like picasso said "good artists imitate, great artists steal" Joe's tone is amazing. very close to that of Eric Johnson and he admits that Eric "has the signal train down to a science" but the comparison's to Beck is where it stops.
I like Joe. Seems like a nice guy, a good player with good tone. So I feel bad slamming him like I'm going to here. Joe needs to find his own identity. All I ever hear from him is derivative me-too wannabe licks from Clapton, Eric Johnson, and now he's apparently been stealing Beck licks verbatim. The whole first section is a blatant Beck rip off. What's the point? At 5:50 he's blatantly ripping of EJ.
And you people are proclaiming him one of the greatest ever?? I'm sorry, no.
ZZ Tops publishing company bitched to youtube about a couple of my video's. Zakk Wylde and THe Hoax, playing ZZ Top songs.... my account got deleted because of it. PUNKS!
The best? Man, I can never narrow it down that tight. Joe is great--I'll be seeing him in a couple weeks, but if you like him, check out Chris Duarte, Melvin Taylor, Bernard Allison (have to see them live to get the real deal, though). What about buddy guy? The Walter Trout duel that comes up with Bonamassa ought to show you something, too. Jeez there's just too many for the comment box!
Well, he's definitly up there with Eric Johnson, Jeff Beck, and all the great virtuoso's that we know and love in the talent department, give him a few years and he may just take that title!
Why can't we just enjoy an artist's talent without having to quantify and compare it to other artist's? Who cares who is the "best"? That's so subjective, anyway. Does that take into account the genre, the age of the artist, where the artist is from, the credentials of those bestowing the title? I know, most of these are inconsequential characteristics and factors. That's my point. There is no "best" anything. It shouldn't matter. Just enjoy the damn music already!
Well, for your info, I didn't SAY HE WAS! I was merely responding to SOMEONE ELSE who was asking if anyone else thought he was! I'll give him the opportunity to prove he is or he isn't! I agree with your assessment COMPLETLY! No need to get TESTY!
Who's getting testy? Besides, I didn't take umbrage with the fact that you guys were debating whether or not he is the best. It's the fact that I feel that it is contrary to a musicians nature to compare artists in that context. We play because we love to play. Critics quantify, classify, categorize, and create competition. No offense to you, personally. I was just putting in my two cents, as were you. That's still allowed here, right?
Oh you can say whatever you want! it's just when you post to ME, please be aware that I am not the one who initiated ANYTHING THAT PISSES YOU OFF! I simply commented on someone ELSE suggesting Joe was the best! To avoid confusion, post a GENERAL post at the bottom of the page RATHER than a direct reply to someones post that didn't do what you accuse some of doing!
Look. I wasn't accusing anyone directly, first of all. Second, based on your comment "give him a few years and he may just take that title!" I would have to say that you most certainly participated. Having said that, I stand by my statement that music is an art form, not a competition. Having said that, I do so enjoy riling people with these little postings. It's all so ridiculous, don't you agree?
Amen, brother man, finally somebody finally said it. If you like it, listen, if you don't, find something else. Really, who cares about anyone else's opinion anyway? That's my opinion.
did anybody bother to notice that the first (instrumental) 5 minutes of this is a song by the king - Jeff Beck. And by the way - Joe Bonamassa is one of the best pure guitar players out there. referring to his style as shredding is just plain NUTS.
it sounds totaly like a little nice clone of jeff beck's style and tone, and that's a compliment

Carvin Tone , what are you like 90 years old?
Videowatcher76 2 years ago
What are you 12? I suppose the teenagers you listen to have achieved a master player status? Who under 40 these days can actually play?
Some kid with too much gain to cover up their lack of ability?
Bonamassa is a true talent. One of those gifted persons who is born with it.
Beck is like 60 now, can you outplay him or attain his level of noted material? I am playing better now than when I was 20 and a legend in my own mind. I am like the same age as Metalica and such, should we quit?
CarvinTone 2 years ago 3
Carvin Tone , Yeah maybe YOU should quit . I'm 51 years old . Started taking lessons when I was 8 . Gave up playing at age 25 due to a serious injury . Picked it back up about 6 years ago . I play better now then I did way back then , primarily because I cannot read music any more . Am I as good as Beck , Bonamassa , Buddy Guy , BB King , or Gary More ? No of course not but I can hold my own jamming with most Blues bands .
Videowatcher76 2 years ago
I'm 52 and I really play heavy fusion these days. Blues is a little boring for me, except I like Bonamassas twist, it makes it interesting again. After 30 years of playing and experience improvising and creating spontaneous music I never try to copy anything unless its just a goof.
CarvinTone 2 years ago
amen to that brother.... for me...joe is like all the good ol guitarists...he just plays the fucking thing...with good inspiring riffs...not obsessed with pedals or effects..or speed..... its just like we want it... RAW
pmay222 2 years ago
Carvin Tone, have you heard the John Mayer Trio? Mayer is an AMAZING blues guitar player. I'd say he's right up there with Joe!
murfdog19 2 years ago

@CarvinTone SRV??? awesome!!!

Tweekerhead 2 years ago 2
@Tweekerhead Exactly Joe is totally unique. I have heard him compared to Eric Johnson, but he is just an assemblance of ALL his influences wrapped up into ONE Great BIG Innovative Genius.
phallystorm 2 years ago
yeah thats what my mate said ry cooder.but as someone comented earlier i tend to agree that for sure can hear influences of both jeff beck and gary moore in his playing.all the same top drawer playing
strumfellow 2 years ago
i have heard this opening solo before somewhere only i cant remember does anyone care to tell me thanks
strumfellow 2 years ago
It sure sounds like he's working off of one of Ry Cooder's themes from the Crossroads movie, to me anyway. If you go and check our Ry's disc titled "Music by", you'll hear a lot of stuff these same melody lines. Joe certainly has good taste.
stanculler 2 years ago
Might be, but Joe said himself that this is mainly taking the violin intro from a Django Reinheart song, hence the name, and the song inspired the name of the album: You and Me.
ScageyGuitarist 2 years ago
Its got a Mark Knofler thing going on for me, his soundtrack type stuff. He opens his new dvd with this track.
toby1kenobe 2 years ago
His phrasing reminds me a lot of Gary Moore's
anongogone 2 years ago 3
I can hear some Jeff Beck in there with the whammy
JmAA7192 2 years ago
Off the charts. Beyond anything I've ever heard a blues player do. A lot of Eric Johnson influences as well in his phrases during the solo. Amazing.
coughforme21 2 years ago
PS you can see one very responsible feature of Joe's presentation here - you really have to look because the lighting is what it is and the camera is what it is, but he's got the two
4 X 12's behind Plexiglas. The drums, keys and bass are too. This lets the stage amps run at whatever level Joe wants to make THE SOUND but tones everything back so the FOH mix can be just that, a proper MIX for the audience in the smaller halls. Quite unique.

Ya'll just watch and listen and stop comparing apples to bananas.
Saw Joe melt paint in a little 300 seat theater in Ridgefield, CT last winter.
mavis41558 2 years ago
To those who don't understand, blues is as much about FEEL as speed. This mans talent is so far off the scale, it's out of sight. In the years to come his name will be written next to the best of the best. Keep them jumpin' Joe
TheMrboots 2 years ago 4
Always loved Joe on the strat. He needs to make friends with Fender again!
dynamohums 2 years ago 5
I believe he signed an exclusive deal with Gibson. When I saw him in a tiny bar in Winter Park (early 2007), he toured with a rolling case of 13 guitars. Not anymore. Three or four Gibsons at the show in August. They're good guitars, and Joe gets the most out of them, but I miss the range it gave him.

Man, This is food for my soul. I miss this in today's music scene.

No matter what we all may say, this guys just leaves us smiling and happy having listened to him playing. And that is whats most important.I also bet thats exactly how Bonamassa wants us to feel...!

I don't care who y'are, that ZZT sh*t's Metal !
I know lots of people seem to be saying he sounds like every other Blues player, but that's the point...it's a very limiting genre, and he's getting crucified for showing he's got it all down and can be reverential to the greats? (Maybe he knows how to build a rep in the Biz more than y'all do.)
I hear more than enough to keep me interested.

he´s great, but it seems like everything he´s playing i´ve heard before - jeff beck, eric johnson, billy gibbons, clapton... they´re all there! great playing and great tone, though...i don´t really know what to think of him - he´s great but i´ve heard it before...
illernbengt 2 years ago
Amazing...the last 5 or 6 dolts on here are actually dumping on this modern day "guitar god'. None of you here, or for that matter, anyone out there now, can touch this guy.
All the greats have 'stolen' from bluesmen of the past. But did we dump on them? Nooooo!
Just appreciate the guy for what he is....a frikkin' AMAZING player!!
rich655 2 years ago 14

Not so much dumping, just trying to educate. This guy is a good player, but he's not unique. He's not an innovator, nor composer nor stylist of any merit. Derek Trucks, if you need someone under the age of 40, is. Derek is unique and extremely talented. Joe is a great player who brings nothing new to the table. He's a talented yet vanilla player. Roy Buchanan for example, never had joe's speed or dexterity, but he was uniquely Roy. Get me now? Good. Class dismissed.
ih8thishit 2 years ago
i have to agree. Every time I hear him, i just hear other bluesy guitarists.

Derek Trucks unique? you're joking right, how old are you?
guitarguy10000 2 years ago
you said and anyone that doesnt hear it is the fuckin moron for not listening to the originals. But not RnR HOF material, no.
ih8thishit 2 years ago
i would agree he is an amazing guitar player, but i have seen nothing different
richiemabie 2 years ago
Joe is great but he is no was near the pure artisrty of Jeff Beck. A Strat in Jeff's hands is pure unadilterated genius. Look at this way, If Jimi was a bluesman from another planet, Beck is Django with a Strat (wammy bar included) and a Marshall cranked way up. So there you are. So, like Picasso said "great artists steal"
vibroluxe 2 years ago 3
Like picasso said "good artists imitate, great artists steal" Joe's tone is amazing. very close to that of Eric Johnson and he admits that Eric "has the signal train down to a science" but the comparison's to Beck is where it stops.
vibroluxe 2 years ago
I'm sorry, no.

actually the first part isnt just a sick solo, its his song called django
burke925 2 years ago
"Django" sounds a lot like Jeff Beck; in fact, a lot of Joe's recent playing sounds very Beck-influenced (especially when he ditches the pick).
Kirok 2 years ago 3
yes ur exactly right. it sounds just like beck. listen to becks song jb blues and it has very similar tone and sound
burke925 2 years ago
Jeez there's just too many for the comment box!
hipgnotist 2 years ago
does anybody think that joe is the best guitarist in the world today? I think he very well may be
canucklehead2004 3 years ago
Well, he's definitly up there with Eric Johnson, Jeff Beck, and all the great virtuoso's that we know and love in the talent department, give him a few years and he may just take that title!
umbilical007 2 years ago
Why can't we just enjoy an artist's talent without having to quantify and compare it to other artist's? Who cares who is the "best"? That's so subjective, anyway. Does that take into account the genre, the age of the artist, where the artist is from, the credentials of those bestowing the title? I know, most of these are inconsequential characteristics and factors. That's my point. There is no "best" anything. It shouldn't matter. Just enjoy the damn music already!
theonlybyrone 2 years ago
Well, for your info, I didn't SAY HE WAS! I was merely responding to SOMEONE ELSE who was asking if anyone else thought he was! I'll give him the opportunity to prove he is or he isn't! I agree with your assessment COMPLETLY! No need to get TESTY!
umbilical007 2 years ago
Who's getting testy? Besides, I didn't take umbrage with the fact that you guys were debating whether or not he is the best. It's the fact that I feel that it is contrary to a musicians nature to compare artists in that context. We play because we love to play. Critics quantify, classify, categorize, and create competition. No offense to you, personally. I was just putting in my two cents, as were you. That's still allowed here, right?
theonlybyrone 2 years ago
Oh you can say whatever you want! it's just when you post to ME, please be aware that I am not the one who initiated ANYTHING THAT PISSES YOU OFF! I simply commented on someone ELSE suggesting Joe was the best! To avoid confusion, post a GENERAL post at the bottom of the page RATHER than a direct reply to someones post that didn't do what you accuse some of doing!
umbilical007 2 years ago
It's all so ridiculous, don't you agree?
theonlybyrone 2 years ago
Sure! i'm not riled at all! God bless!
umbilical007 2 years ago
Amen, brother man, finally somebody finally said it. If you like it, listen, if you don't, find something else. Really, who cares about anyone else's opinion anyway? That's my opinion.

did anybody bother to notice that the first (instrumental) 5 minutes of this is a song by the king - Jeff Beck. And by the way - Joe Bonamassa is one of the best pure guitar players out there. referring to his style as shredding is just plain NUTS.
