you did ok, but you really need to turn out. put a sticker on your inner heel on each shoe. you should be able to see the sticker at all times. and when you turn out you have to cross your feet. practice doing your rallies in front of the mirror really slow to get the beats out and to work on crossing and turning out. after awhile start doing them faster and faster. it'll go great in no time :)
thank you so much for posting this! i am 19 and really want to start to learn -as a total novice speaking, i thought your video was bloody impressive !! i wish i could do that so much! i would love to see what else you learnt from the dvd :) would you recommend it?
make sure your feet don't go outwards on your shuffles. they need to go forward and land behind each other as in you were in fifth position. good job though :)
CROSS THEM FEET if that was me my dance teacher would have shouted at me,especially with the worlds she would have made me do like 15-30 press/push ups!;o she is soo strict!!!
I have to say- this is pretty good for a beginner. I'm trying to learn too...but I'm 12 :) Keep going and try to do that faster- then you'll look like a professional! And also, remember to cross your feet just a little more ;) Nice job!
I am from Ireland orignally, the West of Ireland, County Galway to be more exact, and I thought that your dance was grand. Damn bloody good in my opinion. I can't do it, so more power to ya. I tip me hat to ya mate. Keep up the good work. Sláinte!
Hi! Your pretty good for a beginner! I started dancing when I was 7 and have been doing it for AGES!!! Just remember to crossover and turnout more. It will really improve your dancing! :)
That's really good! Funny thing is, i'm irish, yet i can't irish dance!!! I think you're doing really well and good job ignoring the mean comments. keep it up! :)
hi there! I started tap dancing in my mid-twenties too, I think you're doing real great for a beginner :) your feet are in OK position, you just need to practice the rhythm, make it steady and constant :) great work!
I just came across your video . I learned irish dancing when i was a child but gave up in my teens not long after i progressed into the treple shoes. I recently went back to it as a adult ie 27 and Well done you for learning that off videos. I wish there were more irish dancing classes for beginners adults. Awesome what you were/are doing.
good sound from trebles and good turn out when trebling just remember to keep feet turned out when placing them behind, try to cross them more, if you look at the video you'll notice your feet go straight when you place your feet in behind etc, you are looking for your big toe on your right foot to be pointing to the right corner of the room and the big toe on left foot to point to the left corner of the room at alll times but over all really well done, esp. for someone learning from a video
Hi! Thanks for the video! I'm 31 and started to irish dance 10 months ago! And I love it! Just came back from my first Feis, in Dublin!!! Keep dancin...
@druytfes your're never too old. I have people 40 & 5o odds start starting. As Adults we take a different stance in learning because of our life experiences. we have learned how to learn much better over the years. Somethimes it takes longer to get things but them i think you retain them better. Some of the younger don't remember from one week to the next what was taught but the older ones come in having practised and although technique may not all be there yet, they at least know the step.
@superherongpogi what ever for?! Maybe you'd like to, but you don't NEED to.... and there's no need to be offensive, starters don't automatically know how best to show off the practice. Next time try giving a simple suggestion instead of an insult...
@orchardlea To see the dance if it's right, we can only see your shoes, not the dance. How hard is that to understand? You didn't check your camera if it's in the center of your subject? What a moron.
Well done!!! I started to learn Irish dance at my early 30's (3 months ago!) and even didn't start to practice with hard shoes. This video shows that's not so impossible to learn... thanks and keep dancing!!!
Thanks for posting something like this! I'm trying to learn too, and seeing a fellow noobie at least gives me somewhere to start and makes me feel better that I'm not the only one who needs to watch the DVDs... ;-)
For a beginner, I would say you've done well! You're rhythm is rather impressive too. The only suggestions I would make for next time is making sure that the video catches you from the waist down so we can see your knees. It's very important to see those if you're asking for criticism especially online. Also, keep turning your feet out and dance on the balls of your feet.
P.S. I've been dancing for 13 years. I'm a retired open champion and teach 6+yr olds in the bay area. Hope the advice helps!
@slifer15 I'm sorry you didn't find the video helpful. As my video info section states, I'm a beginner myself and don't want people to copy me, as my technique isn't great yet. I asked for constructive criticism only.
Please read the info sections and find out what things are meant for before you suggest things are "bad" or that someone should be "ashamed". You might cause unnecessary upset otherwise. Regards.
@bob1oughti2000 that's awfully diplomatic of you... I would have told them to b***** off and watch Colin Dunne if they want a slow, didactic professional lesson! Go you - crossing while tapping needs practise, as others have commented, but can definitely see the effort - I'm sure you've improved tonnes by now! I started when I was 28, so more power to us late starters ;)
Feet out just a little bit more : ) I took some lessons but I've lerned more from watching Riverdance and such slowing it down, watching, and repeating.
i used to go to royal tara dancing academy bt it was seven years ago and i didnt learn very much. leaving was my biggest regret bt i was onli 7 wen i left. i wud lyk to learn again,, did u learn that from a dvd if so wat dvd is it and where can you get it?
I started this year. I'm 26. I'm taking classes at the Niall O'Leary School of Irish Dance in New York City. You should take classes. Its much easier than trying to teach yourself. You are pretty good though. Keep it up!
make sure that your trebles are nice and clear and you cross your feet (this is something my dance teacher always yells at us about) also make sure your hops are really up off the ground and distinct; it makes the dance look nicer and keeps you on time
I applaud the fact that you have been brave enough to post this video as an adult learner.
If you keep posting more videos and take on board the comments above then you can only improve.
Have you thought about practicing in front of a mirror? Also, you would see more and we would too, if you altered your dress code to make your legs more visible. It is hard to see when wearing jeans.
So, I understand that you are a beginner. I would defintiely always advise learning soft shoe first. To be frank, it looks more like tap. Work on crossing!! But your turn out wasn't bad at all. And you also need to squeeze your toes MUCH more. This could just be from not broken in hardshoes, though. Keep working at it! :]
WOW!! THANK YOU for posting this- this is so encouraging- I'm 19 and really want to learn how to Irish step dance, but I have never taken lessons of any sort (I don't think I'm even Irish- but Scottish, which is close!). This makes me think it's not too late to learn... can you recommend any good DVD's?
Hey good work-as the others have said work on turnout and crossing-I'm an adult beginner too-self taught for now-what dvds are you using?I have the olive hurley ones-check out my videos and feel free to leave advice :)
1. Turn out. Make sure your heels are facing outwards towards the wall and there are no gaps between your legs at all times.
2. Trebles. Take a look at your hard shoe. See the very end of the fiberglass tip right before it meets the leather of the sole at the widest part of the tap? That is your sweet spot where the best sound will come from.
3. Get a teacher. It's well worth the time and money to find a class if you really love Irish dancing and there are adult classes!
I did Irish Dancing (in fibreglass shoes) for five years and enjoyed in very much until I damaged my knee, and even though I stopped dancing 8 years ago (22 now), I still can't help having the odd dance in the kitchen.
I was the only boy in the class (apart from the instructor) and my piece was 'Warriors' from Riverdance, perhaps you have seen it?, it is very punishing (hence how I buggered my knee).
treble light jigs can sound great if the timing is correct. as per other comments try to work on the placement of your feet, it was my biggest weakness as a dancer
Ok. i think its great that you are doing this. Some advice :D - Cross your feet more. You have good trebles considering you've just started so i think thats something to be proud of - i've seen people in open championships that still only get 2 sounds to there trebles and it drives me crazy! LOL! As for your posture .. i can't really see it to judge ;) keep up the good work:D
I'd say just try to cross over and turn out a little bit (you're turned out now, but more is better). Your rallies, trebles whatever (people : we've really got to think about standardizing these names) could be a bit more distinct. They kind of run together. But great, especially from a DVD.
trie to beat out all the sounds and make them even..other than that it was really good. its nice to see beginers with such enthusism!!keep it up!(sorry about the spelling mistakes!)
I copied (and credited in my "about" information) a tutorial DVD. Which is presumably the effect it was meant to have anyway. This is how people who haven't had the chance to go to dance schools learn to dance and shouldn't be seen as any lesser way of learning, which is what you seem to imply with your "so what" comment. If I have misunderstood your last comment, I apologise, but assuming I haven't I felt this needed to be said.
i noticed in you double-trebles, that your missing the hop between the first & second trebles.... so it's Treble HOP Treble HOP back, exaggerate your hops, and cross a LOT more
your just a beginner?! that was really good. the only thing is that u need to cross your feet more. it will make it look better and cleaner and the sounds will be better as well. it will take some time but it will pay off in the end. nice work though!
umm its ok but a few things to keep in mind cross your feet, turn out and always always always stay off your heels but your rythm is good and even the best technique doesnt get u anywhere without rythm
im 14 ive been tap dancin for 10 years and river/irish dancin for 1 year and still learning a great deal.. great job tho.. keep workin.. it aint easy i no!
def have to agree with the others, cross your feet, and also try stamping harder, this will make you sound more pro and awesome. hardshoe is supposed to be loud defined steps to contrast with soft shoe.
its very good! i have 1 little comment though. try to cross your feet more. it sounds like that would make it harder but if you do, the sounds are even better!
pretty nice for being a self taught beginner :) nice clear sounds and pretty good turn out. I agree with redhead girl cross over is very important! also when you do the treble cuts remember that those trebles are more deliberate. you are rushing them a bit. keep up the nice work!
ya I hear dat! I'm constanly kicking my hands ! always break a nail!I read the comments about breaking in your shoes softglove(baseball palyers use for their gloves)apply it and pop yer shoes in the oven at low temp for about 5 min. cool em' for a sec and then put them on and work on your points & or follow same procedure and then fold them in half laces out and stick em under the couch or in a door sounds goofy but works.
ALSO if you don't have the sued soles your shoes may have a shank that will prevent you from gettin' up on those toes some.(and they won't really bend much) but since your a guy high toes doesn't matter much! keep on dancin'
On the lead round after the "kick knee kick bum" bit, is there a uniform time signature, ie three beats the same length or one long and two shorter ones to follow, or is it down to what you want to do. (Know the lead round itself is traditional.) Thanks for the comment.
Be sure to keep your feet crossed at all times! You should never has space between your legs. Focus on keeping your knees together and it will help a lot. You have a great, clear sound though! Have you ever thought of joining a school?
I've just joined a school now, though concentrating on the steps themselves at the moment. Still working on this though as I'm using to get into good technical habits. Thanks for the comment.
about the shoes, are they stiff leather in between the "tap" parts? that could be why. you need to make sure you can bend your shoes in half... also, they look brand new, so try to soften the leather, but as you continue dancing, they will break in eventually. i'm goign through the same painful process...
Thanks for the advice - is probably a silly question, but do you mean bend the shoes inwards so the lacing is hidden? Kicking myself that I didn't get suede soled ones!
theyre not suede? theres your problem right there...lol. just try bending them anyway you can. the best way is to bring the fiberglass tip to the bottom of the heel. take a rubberband, and leave it there for like a day.
dont worry, i work on turnout by wearing my daytime shoes on the wrong feet (it forces your feet out, and it works too!) and i get some really funny looks when walking cause i look like a waddeling duck! hehe
You already have rhythm that is superior to that of most people in the early stages of learning to dance. That's a good sign! You should consider learning some of the easier dances like the Light Jig and the St Patrick's Day
you shouldnt have only filmed your feet, part of the dance is seeing what your legs are doing it would be better if you shwowed that lol but you are off to a good start =] good job
yah i know how that is either wear them a lot... ie. all the time or do lots and lots of toe raises with them on, and lots of point. Like do some drills which means lots of just pointing in a row, get jean butlers masterclass to understand this better
i have been dancing for 11 years now and i'm a champion as well.
most of the dancers are in the mid twentys now and live in different parts of the world and one of them is now dancing for a world touring dancing group called "rhythm of the dance".
i don't think there will ever be another video anymore!
it was taken so many years ago and Ms Bond isn't in any relation to the dancing school i don't think but royal tara is world class now!
Would love to know what happened to the people in the DVD - are they still dancing? School's vid is good for beginners as Ms Bond takes you through things slowly and with repetitions, but if they ever do another, could you pass it on for them to focus the camera on the feet and not so much on the faces, lovely thought they are! How long have you been dancing, by the way?
Thanks everyone for the comments - am now working on some exercises until I can get transport to a school. Is it general practice to fold the shoes to help staying off your heels?
It's not so much to help keep your heels off the floor, but to soften the sole and increase the arch in the shoe when you point - your arch is a big part of what judges look at in competition. It also makes it easier to do certain steps. Staying off your heels is pure effort, concentration and strength of your calf muscles.
you did ok, but you really need to turn out. put a sticker on your inner heel on each shoe. you should be able to see the sticker at all times. and when you turn out you have to cross your feet. practice doing your rallies in front of the mirror really slow to get the beats out and to work on crossing and turning out. after awhile start doing them faster and faster. it'll go great in no time :)

Can you teach me how to do this im Irish and i dont know how. or atleast make it Slow motion
coolgaljose 3 years ago
turn out and cross over, but still great!
i envy your trebles abit.....; )
Gigdoat 3 years ago
your beat sounds very good, turn your feet out. Keep up the good work!
eiredance92 3 years ago
A few small tips:
LunaLovegood22 3 years ago
I think you did pretty well :)
I did Irish Dancing (in fibreglass shoes) for five years and enjoyed in very much until I damaged my knee, and even though I stopped dancing 8 years ago (22 now), I still can't help having the odd dance in the kitchen.
I was the only boy in the class (apart from the instructor) and my piece was 'Warriors' from Riverdance, perhaps you have seen it?, it is very punishing (hence how I buggered my knee).
junkmailstephens 3 years ago
aww that sucks u damaged ur knee i wud die if i cudn't dance!! i use to irish dance but then i moved :(

treble light jigs can sound great if the timing is correct. as per other comments try to work on the placement of your feet, it was my biggest weakness as a dancer
johndeane1989 3 years ago
Ok. i think its great that you are doing this. Some advice :D - Cross your feet more. You have good trebles considering you've just started so i think thats something to be proud of - i've seen people in open championships that still only get 2 sounds to there trebles and it drives me crazy! LOL! As for your posture .. i can't really see it to judge ;) keep up the good work:D
clickyfeet 3 years ago
f-kin' difficult isnt it ;)
mtomczykpl 3 years ago
I'd say just try to cross over and turn out a little bit (you're turned out now, but more is better). Your rallies, trebles whatever (people : we've really got to think about standardizing these names) could be a bit more distinct. They kind of run together. But great, especially from a DVD.
ghillies4life 3 years ago
trie to beat out all the sounds and make them even..other than that it was really good. its nice to see beginers with such enthusism!!keep it up!(sorry about the spelling mistakes!)

please stop discussing about who created what. lets take it easy and have fun with it :)

I agree completely! Thanks for the comment.

If I have misunderstood your last comment, I apologise, but assuming I haven't I felt this needed to be said.
bob1oughti2000 3 years ago
my dancing teacher copied ur dance or u copied it of her
cutey4ever 3 years ago
The dance is taken from the Royal Tara School DVD (the one with Maolisa Bond) and is a few years old now. I suspect it is a traditional dance.
bob1oughti2000 3 years ago
@cutey4ever does that even matter?
Jammy010495 1 year ago
cross ur feet nd hop all the time but good for a beginer =)
clairedancechick07 3 years ago
Hey its good :D but u need to cross your feet and u have very good trebles :D and if u dont mind please viset my two irish dancing vidios :D xx
ttuuyyuutt 3 years ago
gd but you need to cross ur feet !!!
gemzbabi26 3 years ago
i noticed in you double-trebles, that your missing the hop between the first & second trebles.... so it's Treble HOP Treble HOP back, exaggerate your hops, and cross a LOT more
FeisGirl 4 years ago
good job. remember to keep those feet crossed ;)
irishdancin02 4 years ago
Yeah, cross your feet a bit more and keep them a little more turned more out : ) Great job!

cross ur feet
cheezymouse3 4 years ago
This is the exact treble jig I learned for the first time, I was 14.
LordoftheDance7 4 years ago
your just a beginner?! that was really good. the only thing is that u need to cross your feet more. it will make it look better and cleaner and the sounds will be better as well. it will take some time but it will pay off in the end. nice work though!
amazingdancer5 4 years ago
It was good actually!
Your feet just need to be a little bit more turned out.
xLynsieMarie 4 years ago
umm its ok but a few things to keep in mind cross your feet, turn out and always always always stay off your heels but your rythm is good and even the best technique doesnt get u anywhere without rythm
FeisGirl 4 years ago
Thanks - am working on it!
bob1oughti2000 4 years ago
im 14 ive been tap dancin for 10 years and river/irish dancin for 1 year and still learning a great deal.. great job tho.. keep workin.. it aint easy i no!
greenwallsRcool 4 years ago
I have'nt read all comments, but I think you should add some music an 2nd you should (also) make a video from the backside
Regards from Vienna, Austria
Cuchullain10 4 years ago
def have to agree with the others, cross your feet, and also try stamping harder, this will make you sound more pro and awesome. hardshoe is supposed to be loud defined steps to contrast with soft shoe.
skyefi 4 years ago
Thanks for the suggestions - currently trying to do some exercised on the techniquey bits.
bob1oughti2000 4 years ago
its very good! i have 1 little comment though. try to cross your feet more. it sounds like that would make it harder but if you do, the sounds are even better!
dacnceirish17 4 years ago
oh you give me hope:)
horsechick2006 4 years ago
pretty nice for being a self taught beginner :) nice clear sounds and pretty good turn out. I agree with redhead girl cross over is very important! also when you do the treble cuts remember that those trebles are more deliberate. you are rushing them a bit. keep up the nice work!
kelleebell 4 years ago
Thanks for the comment! Am doing exercises for the cuts now (guess who'se got bruised hands.. I'll get there!)
bob1oughti2000 4 years ago
ya I hear dat! I'm constanly kicking my hands ! always break a nail!I read the comments about breaking in your shoes softglove(baseball palyers use for their gloves)apply it and pop yer shoes in the oven at low temp for about 5 min. cool em' for a sec and then put them on and work on your points & or follow same procedure and then fold them in half laces out and stick em under the couch or in a door sounds goofy but works.
kelleebell 4 years ago
ALSO if you don't have the sued soles your shoes may have a shank that will prevent you from gettin' up on those toes some.(and they won't really bend much) but since your a guy high toes doesn't matter much! keep on dancin'
kelleebell 4 years ago
Might be a bit more entertaining or easier to follow if you added some light traditional music in the background.
Sozzles 4 years ago
I am going to be just like you in my starting Irish Dance. I have always wanted to learn. So if you can do then so can I. Keep up the work.
dbtmellis 4 years ago
You have made my day! Thanks for the comment - great to know you're going to start learning. Good luck!
bob1oughti2000 4 years ago
2 things you'll hear the most - point your toes and cross your feet.
redheadgirl121983 4 years ago
On the lead round after the "kick knee kick bum" bit, is there a uniform time signature, ie three beats the same length or one long and two shorter ones to follow, or is it down to what you want to do. (Know the lead round itself is traditional.) Thanks for the comment.
bob1oughti2000 4 years ago
woooo cludzy here!! O.o its hard to copy^^
PuccaFan4Eva 4 years ago
Well done! You are doing really well for a beginner!Just watch your turnout but other than that its great!
hearttodance 4 years ago
Be sure to keep your feet crossed at all times! You should never has space between your legs. Focus on keeping your knees together and it will help a lot. You have a great, clear sound though! Have you ever thought of joining a school?
irishdancergal 4 years ago
I've just joined a school now, though concentrating on the steps themselves at the moment. Still working on this though as I'm using to get into good technical habits. Thanks for the comment.
bob1oughti2000 4 years ago
about the shoes, are they stiff leather in between the "tap" parts? that could be why. you need to make sure you can bend your shoes in half... also, they look brand new, so try to soften the leather, but as you continue dancing, they will break in eventually. i'm goign through the same painful process...
saoirse3473 4 years ago
Thanks for the advice - is probably a silly question, but do you mean bend the shoes inwards so the lacing is hidden? Kicking myself that I didn't get suede soled ones!
bob1oughti2000 4 years ago
theyre not suede? theres your problem right there...lol. just try bending them anyway you can. the best way is to bring the fiberglass tip to the bottom of the heel. take a rubberband, and leave it there for like a day.
saoirse3473 4 years ago
this is pretty good for learning on your own. you have great turn out, just need to overcross a bit, and that lovely turn out will really show!
saoirse3473 4 years ago
you are goood!!!! ou just need to cross your feet over andd you have a lovey turnout..!
thementalmoose 4 years ago
Thanks! I work on my turnout waiting for the bus - gets some very odd looks!
bob1oughti2000 4 years ago
dont worry, i work on turnout by wearing my daytime shoes on the wrong feet (it forces your feet out, and it works too!) and i get some really funny looks when walking cause i look like a waddeling duck! hehe
saoirse3473 4 years ago
hey really good start but can i just say from experience let ur foot fall a lot looser huny its very tight at the mo but u good
twixmalt 4 years ago
O.o That's good!
pinksquishyllama 4 years ago
You already have rhythm that is superior to that of most people in the early stages of learning to dance. That's a good sign! You should consider learning some of the easier dances like the Light Jig and the St Patrick's Day
Irishlad23ni 4 years ago
Thanks - Currently have two light jigs under my belt and am in the process of learning the St Patrick's Day. Thanks for the encouragement!
bob1oughti2000 4 years ago
you shouldnt have only filmed your feet, part of the dance is seeing what your legs are doing it would be better if you shwowed that lol but you are off to a good start =] good job
RaychL1991 4 years ago
also point your toes more
jooleeyah 4 years ago
I've not actually been able to point my toes in these shoes at all (Pacellis), no idea why. Any advice appreciated - thanks for comment!
bob1oughti2000 4 years ago
you just need to break them in if they are new. Wear them around the house, or find a better way to loosen up the leather
gdmidirish 4 years ago
yah i know how that is either wear them a lot... ie. all the time or do lots and lots of toe raises with them on, and lots of point. Like do some drills which means lots of just pointing in a row, get jean butlers masterclass to understand this better
knossienne 4 years ago
i have been dancing for 11 years now and i'm a champion as well.
most of the dancers are in the mid twentys now and live in different parts of the world and one of them is now dancing for a world touring dancing group called "rhythm of the dance".
i don't think there will ever be another video anymore!
it was taken so many years ago and Ms Bond isn't in any relation to the dancing school i don't think but royal tara is world class now!
hannahbanana600 4 years ago
omg dats mi dancin skuls dvd!
hannahbanana600 4 years ago
Would love to know what happened to the people in the DVD - are they still dancing? School's vid is good for beginners as Ms Bond takes you through things slowly and with repetitions, but if they ever do another, could you pass it on for them to focus the camera on the feet and not so much on the faces, lovely thought they are! How long have you been dancing, by the way?
bob1oughti2000 4 years ago
good trebles!
emilyhiller 4 years ago
Thanks so much - really determined to keep going now
bob1oughti2000 4 years ago
i can do trebles
emilyfl1 4 years ago
you're doing well so far. just make sure you turn your feet out and cross a bit more like suzeee3435 said.
leeciepie 4 years ago
Thanks everyone for the comments - am now working on some exercises until I can get transport to a school. Is it general practice to fold the shoes to help staying off your heels?
bob1oughti2000 4 years ago
It's not so much to help keep your heels off the floor, but to soften the sole and increase the arch in the shoe when you point - your arch is a big part of what judges look at in competition. It also makes it easier to do certain steps. Staying off your heels is pure effort, concentration and strength of your calf muscles.
Kirvin3 4 years ago
I think that if you truly want to learn how to Irish step dance you should find a dance school in your area. You can only learn so much from DVDs.
You're off to a good start but a professional teacher would help you progress a lot faster.
Lovelylisa90 4 years ago
good rhythm! just need to cross over more
