How come none of you guys mentioned a single word about the guy who played 3 sweet pieces on flute from his heart! . just watch him right from the start. He is is the one who actually made the song wonderful! the real star!!
Gopan chetta why are you not posting other songs of the same mumbai show ? In this show (and also the previous year's Bombay show) i played violin for you.
i some times feel, chitra and janaki are better singers than even yesudas. please dont start sending hate comments. it is just my opinion sometimes. not to anger anybody
When you make a comment that Chitra and Janaki are better singers than even Yesudas, I believe that it is not an independent analysis to make a comparison, based on the skills of the singers. All three have their own skills which cannot be matched by others. Yesudas is Yesudas. Look at Chitra struggling to sing the (first line--Yamune--song which was originally sung by S. Janaki.
Regarding pronunciation of "Yadukula", as Gopan said "d" is the proper letter as I have been using Manglish to write the name of Malayalam movies, songs, etc., and sometimes, writing e-mail to people who do not know English.
Where was Chithra struggling to sing the line boss? yes, she was trying hard not to go out of pitch with the orch , thats the challenge in singing on stage.
I think Janaki was a great singer, the but I don't think she was a better singer than Chitra. Chithra possesses all the talents of Janaki plus a well rounded voice.
One more thing, I have never seen any singer deteriorate as fast as Janaki. She was a shadow of her former self since the 80s. Yesudas' voice changed over the years but is still magnificent in Pazhassi Raja. Hope Chithra will sing just like she does today, after another 10 years.
The original song "Yadukula" was sung by S. Janaki and Jayachadran. You must note down the facial expression of Chitra and S. Janaki on any stage program in order to make further analysis. S. Janaki was born on April 23, 1938, and she has been known as the Melody Queen of South India. Yesudas's stage programs reflect his age, but his current songs in the films are good--perhaps as a result of new technology in editing and/or other factors in recording.
Though I wrote about S. Janaki, I also like the songs of Yesudas, Chitra, Sujatha, etc., and I have a large collection of melodies and semi-classicals (1960s to 2000s) sung by them. In addition, recently I bought 1012 film songs of the 1980s for $325 from a person in Kottayam.
I am not in any way undermining the greatness of S Janaki, I believe she is one of the best singers the country has ever produced. All I was saying was that I don't believe she is a better singer than Chithra. As someone else noted in the thread, its impossible to decide who is better- my personal preference is Chithra only due to the fact that her voice is more well rounded.
also I believe facial expressions doesn't mean anything. Isn't it the end result that counts?
As I said in my last comment, Chitra is a great singer, but Janaki is something special. When in her younger years used to sing without any facial expression and movement of hands/legs/body. Compare the ease in singing Janaki's song by others (Radhika Tilak, Gayathri, Cibella). Perhaps age and health (overweight) might have been a problem for Chithra. I liked Gopan's singing better than Jayachandran's in "Yadukula." Thanks for the discussion which ends here.
good discussion, i have to agree with both, Chitra has a slightly better and soothing voice and by 90's, S janaki (may be due to age) became a shadow of what she was in early 80's. But When she was young, she used to sing all those high pitched and otherwise difficult songs with much ease compared to todays singer. But still if asked to make a choice, i may go for chitra by a whisker

i have not studied malayalam as a language in school. but i am sure these kind of things are not tought properly (if taught at all!) in schools and that is why most of us do not know these. most of the things are taught in a wrong way, for example most of the teachers say
ka ikka ga igga nga, instead of ka kha ga gha nga
ok ok, no issues, but i am always worried about poor malayalam used by almost all malayalees, including highly educated. Poor 'akshara sphutatha' (like vidybyasam instead of vidyabhyasam) and other things. Most of malayalees do not know how to talk with respect. for example, when you talk to an elder, you should never say vaa, po tha etc. u shud say varoo, pokoo, tharoo etc. this is only an example.
no, it is true that yadu can be read also as യഡു, but Yathu can be read as യതു or യധു or യഥ , (Tha = ത or ഥ or ധ) in noway it can be read as യദു, which is the correct word
why don't they play a real tambourine instead of the one from that dreadfull drum machine..the real one would have given some life into the percussion
Noone can give emotions to the words like our Chithra chechi does... I mean.. My God!!! wow... listen to every single word she sings here... with so much perfection... She is the Best!!!

Have you seen the expression of Janaki's face, while she sings the song, and Chithra's, particularly on this song?

No, I haven't heard Janaki sing this song live.
