I got to see Richie at Catholic University in 1971 (I think). It was at the Moratorium against the Vietnam war. There were machine guns on the steps of the Capital and Marines waiting for us at the Pentagon but Richie was sweet. He was so sweet.

The brunette at 0:07 is so my type.. What a great way to start the epic intro to this song. I want to learn this and then I realize I can't make full barre chords with just my thumb and raven claw fingernails. I also don't have the sense of rhythm of Santana's entire percussion section in just my right hand and a voice that sounds like a lispy King Jr. holy child of love and god. Richie's untouchable. What a legend.

I saw him at Ram's Head in Annapolis about 15 years ago. Small venue, about 200 people. It was the greatest performance I had ever been privileged to see. Absolutley perfect. His charisma was something to behold, as well as his gutiar playing. I giant of then and now.

i have about 2000 records , Richie Havens is like the only ones i play ... its in the record player and instead of changing it , i think nah ill just listen to this album again. His music is truely one of those things you can never get rid of just like a heron addiction .... xo luv you Richie !

HI..I didn't know who'd recorded this when I uploaded it. I knew it as the highlight of the Woodstock outtakes on the TV and had serached youtube and found nothing. A friend emailed me this recording, so I thought I'd s'd stick it on youtube for the good of the music. i certainly wasn't trying to pass it off as my own, as it's obviously what it is: outtake professional film footage recorded from TV or video.

If you want to know how Richie plays, pick up his DVD "The Guitar Style of Richie Havens." I know everybody wants instant access to stuff online, but trust me it is worth the cost to order it. He basically gives away all his "secrets" about how he plays ALL of his songs, and performs full versions of several songs. "I Can't Make it Anymore" isn't on there, but once you get the basic concept it is easy to figure out.

I've just had a play along to find them... He's in the key of Db and the chords are as follows..

The first part seems to go round DbM7, Gb, Gbm, until 1:14 when a Db7 takes it to the next bit which is just GbM7, DbM7 repeated.

The next change at 1:50ish where it does a quick Ebm7, Ab7 turnaround, then back to DbM7, GbM7 repeated.

Later changes are just the same ones again.

You should find it ok from that.

@sflowmusic .. I can have a go. He's using a strange open tuning here.. I just found it by ear and standard tuning, so it's not quite the same feel but the chords seem right.

@boo66 it works in the key of D and makes it easier. but instead of playing D, play F#m on the the last 3 strings, and keep the bottom 3 strings open, so you'll b playing A on the G string, C# on the B string, and F# on the high E. it gives it an open tuning sound and i think it is the real way to play it, Em7 and A7 work just fine as the transition chords.

@airnsmke Aye - I'd tried it in various keys and found D or C to be easier not to be relying on barre chords and to get the feel of the song with standard tuning... (A works well too if your voice likes it)

I just posted the chords of the original key 'cause I thought that's the best for anybody to work out their own version from, and particularly if they want to play along to the video..

@boo66 I like the sound of D6/9, so I just usually stick with that. I don't think most people can play like Richie does because of his unusually long fingers and hands, but its worth trying his tuning. I've tried playing some of those open D chords and felt like I was gonna break my hand. :)

"I Can't Make it Anymore" gives you the greatest dimension of art. Richie Havens wasn't singing for himself at all on this song . He offered pure love and a touch of sorrow here, and as an unwitting musician/ poet quietly and officially kicked off Woodstock '69.

UnexpectedExpressive. I first saw hime at the Isle of wight 1969 with no idea who hea was. He had a pair of percussionists and another guitar with him and he was extraordinary.
