  • best intro, best game.

  • The Myst series is one of the few series that did FMV right.

  • 1:50 The part from here on when the RIVEN-Logo comes is just EPIC!!!!

  • Hair raising... ♥

And I still find Atrus so sexy... LOL :D

  • This intro is so well made, and I still get goosebumps every time I see it. Riven is an incredible game.

  • This is one of my favorite Playstation jewels..( From 1998, til now, I still own the 5 disc set )... a 11 out of 10.. THE FAZEONES LOUNGE....

  • Every time I see this I get so immersed I can't wait to play the game!

  • This is one of my favorite games to this day. It's one of the few games I've ever played that seems flawlessly made in every way possible.

  • @TReynard1 LOL! I did that too! I wish I still had my big box copy of Riven :( The CDs came in a really nice cd-box type thing.

  • This is the best computer game of all time

  • God I so want to play this. I'd love to install the Myst series on my near-future Ubuntu system.

  • HARDEST game ever.

  • @Left4Bread676 lol i tried playing it as a 5 year old, i got so frustrated. Now I play it as a 17 year old, I really wish I did not cheat as a five year old because I know that now I could beat it without walkthroughs :'(

  • riven is amazing. every time they make a new game the plot thickens and the ages grow ever-more wonderful. but riven had a particularly good plot i think - it's worn-out and abandoned look with eery music and an evil creator give it a sense of sorrow and emptiness you experience when playing the game. although it is one of the older games - it is my favourite myst game of them all.

  • This game was one hell of a mystery. After beating it, Disc 3 broke.

  • haven't played Riven yet(still.........??). the graphic seems upgraded tenfold, more in tune with nowadays 3ds max graphic, so how long were they apart?? its funny to see the comparison between Myst and the Real version, if one judge it bases on current standard and terms.

  • @keithktam The game is beautiful. The only reason why they were able to achieve this in 1997 is because all the moving scene are prerendered videos, and everything else is still images (edited in Photoshop). Nothing in the game is drawn in 3d using the players' computers.

  • @DattuWarptera

i mean, yeah. to use pre rendered method was a great innovation of their time. nowadays, since the chip's power is so powerful, none of these seem matter anymore, the market although more mature, but it has gotten narrower. do miss the good old day where the industries and market were fresh and young, more diverse.

  • Rand Miller is actually a fairly decent actor, although he's slightly over dramatic. He pauses too much.

  • I just love how atlus "If this all goes well i might be to get you back to the PLACE you came from" which is basicly saying he's not from earth, which makes even more mysterious

  • actually if you read the books and journals you find out that D'ni, the ruined city where Atrus is and whom himself and his father are the last descedants of, is underground somewhere in the Mojave desert. Also the guy playing Atrus is actually one of the co-creators of the Myst games.

  • @TheBlackEternalWings That line always gave me chills

  • One of the best intros ever..Really sets the atmosphere for the game..I remember never skipping the intro, when I played Riven a few years ago now, it really put me in the mood for playing this awesome game!

  • this gives me an idea the panel+rickkroll=lol

  • if you look carefuly at the linking book at 1:52 you will see ghens face. this was intentional, it was put there to make you think ghen was watching you from the very begining.

  • The eyes of Gehn flash on the panel several times in the opening sequence here. Very nice, subtle way of instilling the atmosphere of Riven.

  • I paused the video randomly while it was doing the distortion thing, and I saw some eyes and was creeped out.

  • Those are meant to be Ghen's eyes, and you're meant to be creeped out! Ghen is watching you!

  • GHEN IS WATCHING YOU MASTURBATE

    D:

Also, I have my father's old copy of Riven, but it doesn't want to run on my XP. I read in the manual something about 'ActiveX 5.0', I think the current version is 9 or something.

When I click on the Riven icon on my desktop, nothing happens. No loading screen, no hourglass, nothing. I guess I'll have to wait for Cyan to release Riven for the iPhone.

  • You have to run Riven in Compatibility Mode. There are some guides online if you use Google.

  • Dude, you totally save the day.

Now I can play Riven! :D

  • Yeah! Glad to help.

  • Got the game to work, but a weird problem comes up.

I can't hear voices! Background music is perfect, but I can't hear the people talking!

The whole time I was going 'WHY THE HELL AM I IN THIS CAGE, WHY DID I JUST WILLINGLY GIVE UP MY BOOK, AND.... DID A NINJA JUST SAVE ME?!?!

  • I think it might be my sound card. Duke Nukem 3D also had sound problems on my computer, so after I come back from this party, I'm going to install it on my father's computer and see if it works there.

  • Wait...if you can't leave that room on K'veer...where the hell did you return from that constitutes a "thank god you've returned" ??

    XD

  • from Myst Island, there's a linking book on the desk

  • OH YEEEEAH. Haha I forgot he let's you go back!

  • One little detail that was lost to me (at least) is that the intro with Atrus is framed like a scene from Myst (down to the setting in K'Veer and the screen resolution). However once the title appears the screen shifts into the higher details of Riven (in fact compare the quality of the background behind Atrus to the images once the game properly begins).

  • That was so the K'veer scene looked identical enough to the original, so that the player knows whats goin on. I think it may be even the same original render. they did, thankfully, upgrade the composition and video quality. I think Rand got a little better at acting as well.

  • Where did he come from?? Who IS this person, who came out of a void in Myst I. The void is so weird

  • You should read the book trilogy, it will clear everything up, and they are VERY good books.

  • If you haven't played the games there's no point in reading the books, but they put a lot of work into them and it shows.

  • I couldn't disagree more. The books themselves are phenomenal reads alone. The stories are fantastic, and you certainly don't need to play the games to understand them.

  • what a truckload of memories, riven took me 5 years and 3 pc's to beat... that's not even funny I was so obsessed so as to dream about riven, that intro send chills down my spine. god I can even recite atrus' And Cho speeches

  • I could be wrong but according to the entries of both Atrus and Gehn's journals, Riven begins 17 days after Myst ends.

  • Man, I still haven't finished Riven. I'm gonna give that one another try someday.

I had to use a hint guide for the puzzle with the rolling balls scattered over the island, AND I never figured out the number system for myself.

Kinda makes me wish that I could wipe the answers and start over, enjoying it properly.

  • this game is an IQ test from hell; the only reason I finished it was because the one I bought came with a free game guide. I used the hint-only section to avoid spoilers, but it was hella hard. T_T

  • dude i feel you, the puzzles forced you to think outside the box and the solutions were scattered all over the islands, sometimes not even on the same one. Man I love these games, but this one was definitely the hardest.

  • yeah this really does test your intelligence. so does myst, they were wonderful games. i wish they would remake them into the same form as exile, where you can look all over the place. would be great

  • one of the hardest best games that me and my bf finished!

  • I always got chills when I saw that intro... Still do today, too...

It just lets you know that you're in for something. Great game...

Never could beat it, though... Too slow of a computer back then to actually work with the game.

  • The appropriate response to Atrus at this point:

    "HELL NO!"

  • Hahaha <3

  • LOL, definitely. I'd be, like, get me that friggin Star Fissure code and let me get back home! I already saved your life once!

  • I could never finish this game! It was damn hard.. (I was 8 years or something like that back then in the good days)

Now selling the game on a auction site :)

Played a lot of point and click games though!

  • It took me 5 years to beat it, I think I was a little bit older than you were though

  • it took me nearly 9 years to beat the original Myst!

no im not trying to gloat. im just saying how hard it was to figure out most of those puzzles in all the Myst games

  • It was hard.. BTW what's a gloat

  • a gloat is where you make fun of someone else for not being at the same level you are.

  • i feel you on that one, it took me a good while to figure out the railroad puzzle X.x

  • definately best game ever. period

  • Who plays artus?

  • Rand Miller, one of the original creators of the series.

  • I find the 2nd one and the ones after that hard to follow

  • damn this brings back so many good memories, playing it in the dark with the volume up, and playing it till like 2 in the morning. ah those were the days :)

  • Damn straight. Those high-tech 2-D environments... That music...

These games raised me. God bless the 90's PC games.

  • OMG that says it all. All you can see is the screen, my dad coming up the stairs like "YOURE STILL UP?!"

    Good stuff.

  • lol, hell yeah! :P

  • Memories memories....

  • i love this game so much!

  • ah that intro still makes me cum in my pants

  • Comment removed

  • I haven't played Riven (yet) I played Myst and Exile...but that looks like that room in Myst where you return the book thing to him

  • That's because it is the same place. :p

  • it is. its called K'veer.

  • Riven is the best ! :D

I Have a new computer soo riven dosen`t work at it xF

Thanks for posting this video :D

  • it will work if u right click on the riven icon and click on properties and then "run in windows 98 mode"

  • Watching this still give me chills. Thanks for posting it :)

  • god, every time i turn down the lights, up the volume to play riven, i get chills whenever i see this scene. thanx soo much for posting this ^^

  • Great intro, looks like a movie intro, truly great atmosphere around it, dialogue is great and kinda badass:p dont know why i think that last but it sounds cool:P this intro really starts you up , you zap in the bool and tadaaa youre in a prison:P simply brilliant

  • this is an amazing intro, so amazingly cinematic. (in fact, the first time my dad started up this game and I saw this, I asked him what movie he was watching. LOL)

  • one of the best of the series to me!

  • I never figured out this game. Only a few puzzles.

  • Myst and Riven were so awesome. The atmosphere surrounding it was phenomenal. But Riven was soooo difficult! Never completed the game.

  • great!!! thanks for post it!

  • I love the ambient noises in the game. This opening was epic.

I mean it takes place directly after the good ending of Myst. I luve it.

  • Riven is such an amazing game. The only thing is that I still haven't managed to finish it yet. That damn waffle iron is nigh-impossible to figure out.

  • All you need to know is the 6 Riven colors (Which you can discover by watching the lights in the Wahrk pool) And the locations of the Domes which you can find with the 3-D map grid on the map island. The map is the grid and the colors are the domes. You'll find each color written in D'ni on each respective dome.
