hey ciaela cutey, how old were u when u began to learn japanese , and why? im 23 and i want to learn japanese this or next year, i learned a few sentences / words by anime or movies, i want to live someday in japan maybe as a german / japanese translator or something. how long did it take to learn japanese, and how long do u live in japan and do u want to live there forever?
Now, I can't explain my entire plan for my future in Japan and in the Japanese language in general here in this little box, but I just want to say I am seriously thinking about attending NILS. I really, really, really want to do the intensive 2 year program (if I can get the money).
I just wanted to thank you, because I found out about NILS through you! <3
Are you going to stay in Japan for a long time? I mean, have you finally settled down and decided that Japan is where you want to live for the rest of your life? Is living in Japan better than living in Canada? If so, in what ways?
@Ciaela Hello Ciaela, I studied abroad in Japan for a year as an exchange student and I am wanting to get into a language school, but I have a question. Do you know of any scholarships or methods of paying for said language school. that would be easier than my current plan of teaching for a couple years to save up for language schools.
@Ciaela Starting the year after next I will go study abroad in Japan. I will go to high school that the organization I'm going with chooses. Is it possible that I can go the that high school and NILS at the same time??
hi Micaela, my name is Melinda and i live in the U.S, i was wondering if NILS is a college, currently i am applying to colleges and i would like to major in education and teach english in japan. do you think me and this school would be a good fit? any suggestions?
Hi Micaela, my name is Melinda and i live in the U.S I was wondering is nils a college? I really want to become a english teacher in Japan and currently im applying to colleges. i was wondering if this could be the right school for me ? any suggestion ? =] please and thank you !!!
Hey Ciaela, I think I'm going to apply to KCP International very soon. Have you ever heard of that school? Do you think that NILS might be better than other schools for any reasons or?
Oh how I would love to go to Japan to study. NILS looks really good as well. Unfortunately My bank account isn't anywhere near the $10k+ I'd need for fees, accommodation and the need to eat. However I'll be starting University here in Australia soon and they offer things such as 6 month study abroad in Japan funded by the government which is pretty cool.
Hi! :) I'm new to your videos and I'm really curious to see how long you've been studying japanese for? And how long have you been living there for? Just wondering because I want to start learning and It would be my dream to be as fluent as you are! ^^
@IPwnZombis Sorry, I'm not Ciaela, but I'm vegetarian and I've visited Japan a few times for weeks - it's VERY tough to be vegetarian if you're strict about it. If you don't mind beef broth in your pasta and pork or fish broth in almost all Japanese food, you can eat normally, but if not you'll have to avoid eating out as much as possible. I recommend allowing at least broth if you really want to live there (maybe fish), the culture simply doesn't understand western "vegetarianism".
@pratyeka I agree with this comment. When I came back from visiting my family in Canada I decided to try a vegetarian diet, and it soon progressed to a pescetarian, and then suddenly it went to, "oh wtf, there are chunks of beef in the vegetable curry I ordered", and people around me un-necessarily worrying too much about where to eat. "Let's go get some Pizza--OH Sorry, Micaela, I don't think they do Vegetarian there." It's been a rough experience, for sure.
Yay! I'm going next year for a 4 week course! I'm heaps worried about lots of stupid things though like not being found when they pick me up from the airport, sleeping in and missing class, GETTING LOST!!!, and also having to make my own way back to the airport! >.< I'm quite hopeless. lolsipop
You met my sister matya! im her sister =] she went off to japan after this program BECAUSE of you!! thanks ~ now my sister fulfilled her goal in life. I LOVE LOVE LOVE your videos!
Very generous of you! To be honest, if I didn't have any ties in Canada I can totally picture myself just going to japan for a couple years to learn japanese there. It feels like a dream, I'll have to settle with going back on Vacation..
Ciaela - is your (long-term) discount in addition to the $500 discount they list on the site, or is it the same? Also, sorry to be a bother, but do you think it would be tough to get a part-time job in Fukuoka and a work permit? That could make the difference in how possible this is for me.
You know, although I was surprised you didn't get into NextUp, I really think it is because YT recognizes you already make great videos - this is put together better than anything I've seen the winners of that contest do before or after the boot camp. I love that you put the time and effort in to show that we don't need to be coached by Google to make top level YT videos.
Anyway, great video that is going to help a LOT of people out.
Hi Ciaela, how long is this discount good for? I think this school seems like a really good idea, but it would take me some time to save up for some of these fees (I checked the website out ).
This is such an awesome idea! I've been wanting to learn Japanese for a while, but I don't think I'll be going to Japan any time soon. Thank you so much for thinking about us though <3
So I studied in France this summer and the classes were all in French and I found that I did not learn well as I had to use my dictionary a lot and the teacher went too fast, did you have the same problem or is there some help in English?
I'm seriously considering learning in Japan and applying for a University before I apply to NILS (they are my #2 choice in terms of price haha)
Reading your replies I'm wondering, what kind of jobs can I get in japan? I don't imagine it to be easy to find full time or part time work for foreigners but I may be completely wrong. Someone let me know.
Wow your Japanese is amazing! I'm also a Canadian (Toronto) trying to study Japanese on my own. I recalled from your video saying that you're staying in 福岡? How do you find 博多弁or other Japanese dialects..Are they challenging or similar to standard Japanese?
I currently studying at GenkiJacs, in Fukuoka (Tenjin), I saw NILS when I was searching for a school, but the reason I didn't pick it was because of the Class Size. They can have up to 20 people in a classroom, while GenkiJacs has a max of 6 student. GenkiJacs is a bit more expensive when it come to class, but there accommodation are way cheaper. Host family is 56000yen a month and the Cheapest dorm is 40000yen a month. NILS is probably a good school, but when you plan you have to look around.
@EckoStream On the NILS Website, It clearly says dormitories are 25,000/month for a private room. If you have a shared room it is even cheaper, only 17,500/mo... But I'm sure you made the right choice for you.
Geez people, the quality of the video is not the end of the world. Stop bugging her about what quality YOU watch in. The information in the video is what you should watching it for. Not how pretty the quality is. Don't throw a tantrum like a little brat.
So my main question is how do you pay for it? Because I know that you didn't just have $7000 in your pocket already in place when you applied, right? Are they're any kind of grants/scholarships for this program? Or is there like a payment plan for you after you graduate?
@Psychooncrack8 I worked one full time job, and a part time job on the weekend, and one in the evenings during the week. If you are interested in payment plans, please contact the school themselves, I've heard they do a lot to accomodate their students. Explain your situation and see what they can do for you.
I've been watching your videos for a while and I would really like to ask you a question because I'm a girl from Canada really wanting to study in Japan.
What made you decide to go all the way to Japan to study Japanese? Did you go with your family? And how old were you?
I really want to go, but I'm thinking that maybe I should go after I finish my four years of university. I would really would like your insight on this :)
@KiBaLoVeR494 I was 17, I went on a highschool exchange, no, my family didn't come with me. I decided to come to Japan because I wanted to do something exciting with my life. I chose Japan because my only other option was an exchange to Quebec, and I wanted to go to a new country instead of somewhere else in Canada.
@blackhat2005 Why don't you check the website? You would get your answer so much quicker! They have dorms, and individual apartments if that's what the students want.
If I may ask... what do you work with? Because I have heard that it is very difficult for a foreigner to have a job, even if they can speak well japanese. the only job is being: English or any kind of teacher!...
So my question is that true or not? I want to have information from your perspective ^__^
I have thought seriously to study Japanese in that kind of environment, but I'm really sad because my parents won't let me go... They're worried I'm going to lose my head in Japan :P
Thanks for this video. I was thinking of going there but I'm not sure I would be able to afford it even with the discount. But I still have to do some research :)
@freezkeer I really only learned it out of necessity. After living in Japan for a long time you sort of just, start to recognize the kanji you see every day, and since you're constantly using it, it just starts making sense.
@lissheim Hehe, I've learned that as a child from watching the animation "Nils Holgersson". It was much much later that I found out that it was actually a japanese animation...
I found a Japanese shop in the netherlands finally after 1 year of searching i kept looking for away from home to find out one is only 30 minutes away from my home so i will go there to learn the basic stuff and after that i would really like to go to NILS XD
That's a kind offer, Ciaela-san! I doubt it would be practical for me to come to Japan foe a school like this in the foreseeable future. But I acknowledge that learning Japanese in such a "hothouse" environment would have many advantages, and would undoubtedly speed up my learning. It's going at tortoise pace in a non-J environment....
Great well saving money is hard for me in a way I wanted to learn Japanese and that is awsome that you learn Japanese very well in Japan well for me here is kinc of hard because their are not enough Japanese speakers in a way I do like to boost my life in all aspects and its never too late to inspire my dreams well I hope you could sugest me something.
ug....you are living my dream, that i will never accomplish because of my autism :( i'm glad though that it worked out for you ^^ thanks for sharing how you did it :)
Hmm, Is this a good idea for people who know little to no Japanese? Or is this a program for those that know basic but wish to advance their Japanese?
I would totally do this, but I'm already planning on another program that would send me to Tokyo over summer to take classes. However, the classes will be in English (I'm already taking courses taught in Japanese, not too difficult) but I've never been to Japan before and my Japanese has a lot of improving to do. XD
I think to get advanced in a foreign language, you need to be immersed in a country where that is the primary language.
I have been learning Indonesian for 8 years but, I feel like I'm not getting any better. I think that that's probably because I'm a bit lazy, but I think living in an Indophone country would make me more advanced. Yeah!
@bloc22 Honestly, nobody watches it in anything higher, and it's not worth spending the extra time to render and then upload a large file, especially for something not-gorgeous, like this.
@Ciaela The resolution does not matter as much as the bitrate. You can find videos on YouTube at 360P that look better than videos in HD, but HD video with high bitrate will look better. Your videos are really well done though.
The dollar has been bad exchange rates with yen. I don't think it's a good time to come to Japan. However, I've heard English tutors make easy money. So I recommend you to learn how to "teach" English beforehand.
I've been interested in doing that. But thus far I've studied Japanese on my own for about 3 years and I've seen the progress of being self taught. I'm aiming for the 2kyuu next year, 1kyuu (or N2 and N1 now) the following year. I fill my life with Japanese and work in an environment where most of my co-workers do not speak English. I know that school could benefit me, but other than time, I think I could get just as much on my own, and save money.
For any J students here I strongly recommend u contact the nearest Japanese consulate & request literature about the "Mombusho Scholarship Program" --they pay your ticket 2 Japan, your tuition, even your room & board for 1 full year. It's really an amazing program.
In previous comments you lived in Japan for two years before you attended NILS and went to Japan in high school. Were these two years in high school? Either way, how did you get there? As in were you a foreign exchange student for a year or attended an international school?
@Standard420247 J keyboards are 95% the same as "our" keyboards --roman letter input is converted into kana, then kanji candidates are automatically displayed. The typist then rapidly designates which kanji of those displayed are appropriate. This romaji-->kana-->kanji sequence is done rapidly and reliably. In fact YOUR keyboard can almost surely function as a J keyboard --u simply have to turn it on. U must download the East Asian Font Language Pack + turn it on.

If you are interested in payment plans, please contact the school themselves, I've heard they do a lot to accomodate their students. Explain your situation and see what they can do for you.

How hard is it to find a job there?
Emo0Yaoi0Kage 3 months ago
I've been watching your videos for a while and I would really like to ask you a question because I'm a girl from Canada really wanting to study in Japan.
What made you decide to go all the way to Japan to study Japanese? Did you go with your family? And how old were you?
I really want to go, but I'm thinking that maybe I should go after I finish my four years of university. I would really would like your insight on this :)
KiBaLoVeR494 3 months ago
@KiBaLoVeR494 I was 17, I went on a highschool exchange, no, my family didn't come with me. I decided to come to Japan because I wanted to do something exciting with my life. I chose Japan because my only other option was an exchange to Quebec, and I wanted to go to a new country instead of somewhere else in Canada.
Ciaela 3 months ago
@Ciaela wow! that's actually amazing :) You are soo lucky to do that!
I'm really considering doing some sort of an exchange! I really want to experience something different from Canada, you know? :p

The Japanese teacher reminds me of one of my university Japanese profs. ^^ So cute.

What about living arrangements at NILS? Do they do dorm style, or each person has to get an apartment?
blackhat2005 3 months ago
@blackhat2005 Yeah i want to know that to xD
klefje2 3 months ago
@blackhat2005 Why don't you check the website? You would get your answer so much quicker! They have dorms, and individual apartments if that's what the students want.
Ciaela 3 months ago
If I may ask... what do you work with? Because I have heard that it is very difficult for a foreigner to have a job, even if they can speak well japanese. the only job is being: English or any kind of teacher!...
So my question is that true or not? I want to have information from your perspective ^__^
diiiva2001 3 months ago
I have thought seriously to study Japanese in that kind of environment, but I'm really sad because my parents won't let me go... They're worried I'm going to lose my head in Japan :P

Thanks for this video. I was thinking of going there but I'm not sure I would be able to afford it even with the discount. But I still have to do some research :)

I`m really struggling with kanji. how long did it take you to learn and do you happen to have any handy advice?
freezkeer 3 months ago 5
@freezkeer I really only learned it out of necessity. After living in Japan for a long time you sort of just, start to recognize the kanji you see every day, and since you're constantly using it, it just starts making sense.
Ciaela 3 months ago 13
@Ciaela I can read up to about a 3rd 4th grade level but beyond that my brain stops functioning. Super frustrating. Wish I was as smart as you.
Thanks for the reply, you`re awesome.
Peace.

Nils is actually a Swedish boy's name....anyhow, very nice idea!

Can I go NILS Japanese School even if I live in Sweden?
OnniGames 3 months ago
@OnniGames Absolutely. They get students from Sweden often, I think!
Ciaela 3 months ago
@Ciaela Sounds good to me :) But first, I will need to finish school.
OnniGames 3 months ago
That's a kind offer, Ciaela-san! I doubt it would be practical for me to come to Japan foe a school like this in the foreseeable future. But I acknowledge that learning Japanese in such a "hothouse" environment would have many advantages, and would undoubtedly speed up my learning. It's going at tortoise pace in a non-J environment....
Expresso98 3 months ago
Great well saving money is hard for me in a way I wanted to learn Japanese and that is awsome that you learn Japanese very well in Japan well for me here is kinc of hard because their are not enough Japanese speakers in a way I do like to boost my life in all aspects and its never too late to inspire my dreams well I hope you could sugest me something.

Hmm, Is this a good idea for people who know little to no Japanese? Or is this a program for those that know basic but wish to advance their Japanese?

Is it hard to migrate to Japan ? :/

I love this!
disneykid1 3 months ago
I would totally do this, but I'm already planning on another program that would send me to Tokyo over summer to take classes. However, the classes will be in English (I'm already taking courses taught in Japanese, not too difficult) but I've never been to Japan before and my Japanese has a lot of improving to do. XD
HowAboutLauren 3 months ago
That's really nice of you to do this for your subscribers! I won't be able to attend, as I'll be in university next year, but thank you!!!
laura121684 3 months ago 7
I think to get advanced in a foreign language, you need to be immersed in a country where that is the primary language.
I have been learning Indonesian for 8 years but, I feel like I'm not getting any better. I think that that's probably because I'm a bit lazy, but I think living in an Indophone country would make me more advanced. Yeah!

Only 360p? :(
bloc22 3 months ago 7
@bloc22 Honestly, nobody watches it in anything higher, and it's not worth spending the extra time to render and then upload a large file, especially for something not-gorgeous, like this.
Ciaela 3 months ago 7
@Ciaela Eh that's true.
bloc22 3 months ago
@Ciaela double objection!!
shippalrus 3 months ago
@Ciaela The resolution does not matter as much as the bitrate. You can find videos on YouTube at 360P that look better than videos in HD, but HD video with high bitrate will look better. Your videos are really well done though.

@Ciaela 360p makes you less gorgeous. hahahah. jk.

@Ciaela 360? That's an odd format isn't it though? First I've ever seen it I think.
GmasterRED 3 months ago
@Ciaela I disagree. 360p seems blurry and so 2006.I always watch in 720p when possible.

The dollar has been bad exchange rates with yen. I don't think it's a good time to come to Japan. However, I've heard English tutors make easy money. So I recommend you to learn how to "teach" English beforehand.
KamedaFamily 3 months ago
I've been interested in doing that. But thus far I've studied Japanese on my own for about 3 years and I've seen the progress of being self taught. I'm aiming for the 2kyuu next year, 1kyuu (or N2 and N1 now) the following year. I fill my life with Japanese and work in an environment where most of my co-workers do not speak English. I know that school could benefit me, but other than time, I think I could get just as much on my own, and save money.
shearoberts 3 months ago
For any J students here I strongly recommend u contact the nearest Japanese consulate & request literature about the "Mombusho Scholarship Program" --they pay your ticket 2 Japan, your tuition, even your room & board for 1 full year. It's really an amazing program.
blondecrazygaijin 3 months ago
@blondecrazygaijin can you message me more information on that. Like how would I find a Japanese consulate?
ratm239 3 months ago
In previous comments you lived in Japan for two years before you attended NILS and went to Japan in high school. Were these two years in high school? Either way, how did you get there? As in were you a foreign exchange student for a year or attended an international school?

Where's the video about japanese keyboards?!
Standard420247 3 months ago
@Standard420247 J keyboards are 95% the same as "our" keyboards --roman letter input is converted into kana, then kanji candidates are automatically displayed. The typist then rapidly designates which kanji of those displayed are appropriate. This romaji-->kana-->kanji sequence is done rapidly and reliably. In fact YOUR keyboard can almost surely function as a J keyboard --u simply have to turn it on. U must download the East Asian Font Language Pack + turn it on.
