so stunning. this is Art. the dances are like a series of different paintings in motion. I really dislike most bellydance performances i've seen because they are more like peep shows and retain no mystery. not to mention the tacky costumes and constant smiling. gah. hats off to them though. but the clothes/veils, movements, lighting in combination with the music in this video are far more potent and alluring.
@zannouba75: merci d'avoir faite un show pour les gens qui sont fatiguer du format Jamilla. it's like the only style of belly dance the general public is willing to accept is the hollywood/american style interpretation from the last century.
lets watch this and pretend for a moment that belly dance is an ancient art form that was around long before sequins and hair extensions!!!
I love it. Very artistic! Beautiful color and imagery! I think that if we are going to dance and perform for others its best if we have some intention, some image, some sentment, thought, or feeling we want to share with the world. Obviously, you have a well thought out artistic intention!
@BelleSorceress thanks for your comment... for the moment the show Awadi is no more available because we concentrated on another one, called The Nomad Ball but we hope we'll make it all again soon
I see our show is happily the occasion for many talks and cultural arguments ( sorry for my quite bad english)
As choreographer of the show, here is what I can tell you about these costumes story
First of all, even if we do have respect for persons that dance cabaret style in a fine way, we think that we should not be forced to dress with only a glitter bra to dance oriental , arabic or egyptian style of dance. That is why we created such a show. Others styles do exist
Ce sont Les musiciens du Nil(ils viennent d'un village près de Luxor), l'album est "Charcoal gypsies", ils ont plusieurs albums, je les recommande tous :o), bonne danse :o)
This is theatre (and that is a compliment!) Bravo. So much more entertaining than dancers in a line all doing hip-drops with plastic smiles or trying to look gothly robotic! This was compelling.
The costumes are all based on images of dancers in past centuries. As I see it, the costuming is a way to take it back to a time before belly dance was influenced by the west, with cabaret style bra-and-skirt costumes.
Of course, a lot of "Orientalist" art was done by western artists who had no first hand experience seeing an Egyptian dancer, so it cant necessarily be assumed to be authentic.
I beg to differ Egyptian costumes were never influenced by the wesr , but the costumes in the clip ARE iffulanced by the Italian/Freanch reinessance period.
Due to my interest in the subject, I have done a litte research into the area of belly dance history and costuming. I would recommend to you and to anyone else interested in the subject to check out the book Serpent of the Nile: Women and Dance in the Arab World by Wendy Buonaventura. It has abundant illustrations of belly dancers past and present, with information on how the dance has evolved over time.
Also, read the wikipedia article on belly dance, specifically the section on costume. You disagreed with my statement that "Egyptian costume" has been influenced by the west, but a paragraph here backs me up - "The costume now associated with this dance ... was adopted by dancers in Egypt in the 1930s...... It owes its creation to the harem fantasy productions of Vaudville, Burlesque and Hollywood during the turn of the last century, rather than to actual authentic Middle Eastern dress."
Why would I want to read an article in Wikapidia Any one can write in their! Next you will be telling me that The ancient Egyptians TIME TRAVElLD into the future & got the idea of the pyramids from Vagas! Likewise The Venizians Copied Vagas Casino's. "Get Real" The USA copy's Europe & the Middle East BECAUSE like it or not You all originate from somewhere else & the Migrants took their tradition with them,
The Only True Americans Are The Native American! The rest of you are migrants.
Im not going to tell anyone anything about time travel or pyramids since I know nothing about either. After all I wouldnt want to sound like an idiot. Im also no expert on Venizians, I dont even know what a Venizian is (from Venice? from Venus?)
Now, if you really really want the last word, go for it, past this point Im not going to respond to you. This is a lovely video that I enjoyed very much, and there is no need to turn the comments below it into a flame war over something so stupid.
I see our show is happily the occasion for many talks and cultural arguments ( sorry for my quite bad english)

Not very good, actually, although the intentions are nice .... OK to look at, but not much is actually dance or dance movements belonging to the music....... takes itself too seriously for folk dance
Thanks Dancigirl and Margitno for your comment! This show is a tribute to traditionnal forms of egyptian dance , so we re-interpret saidi, ghawazee, baladi and zar dances , it depends on the choreographies ....
For axample, images with continuous shimmy and a red veil is inspired by gestures and incredible energy of ghawazee dancers , but in the show the music comes from egypt/sudan, as it is a reinterpretation
