  • If only Marcelo and Erik had the same age and weight. It would make the fight of the century...

  • eric paulson can break your bones with moves named in acient times and taught in wigan england about a hundred years ago to a few young men who have passed it on for a couple generations now SCIENCE

  • Why is everyone getting on here and talking trash about everyone else? It's a video to give you some options to use on the mat. That's it. Eddie didn't invent the "rubber guard", he just gave it a flash name hit a bong and tweaked some positions, thats it. It's why the kimura is called a chicken wing or an americana is called a figure four armlock. I am tired of people bickering, watch the videos and appreciate somebody taking the time to try and help folks out.

  • @ActaNonVerba08 TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU.....DONT TALK TRASH. IF YOU DONT LIKE IT; POST YOUR OWN VIDEOS OR REPLY VIDEOS!

  • @TheLockon00 Bullshit. All these vids on smashing the rubber guard & breaking the lockdown are demonstrated against opponents who are performing the techniques incorrectly. It's not a lockdown if the guy isn't locked down. Maybe we should rename this video "Breaking a Semi-lockdownish type o' move with Erik Paulson.

  • @karidaty I agree the dude in this vid ain't throwing on the sickest lockdown, but these moves work. I think you've seen the "Breaking the Lockdown: Buttock Compressor" vid one two many times where Eddie tries to undermine Erik (and Gene Lebell, Karl gotch and others who've used this move) by doing this move wrong. Erik's not dissing the rubber guard or Bravo, he's just showing a counter, but you bravo fans think RG is perfect and without flaw.

  • @TheLockon00 I'm not Dissing anyone. Bike shorts or not, I'm sure Erik Paulson could roflstomp me if he so chose. But he'd have to do it from inside my lockdown, cuz he ain't breakin' the mother fucker =) And if I can get the Bas Rutten arm bar on him he ain't breakin' that either! SCIENCE!!!!

  • @karidaty Are you honestly trying to say the lockdown's unbreakable and that Erik couldn't break yours? cuz both ideas are ridiculous.

  • @TheLockon00 The lockdown isn't 100%. Obviously no guard is or everyone would use it. What I am saying is that a properly executed lockdown controlling your opponents posture and base cannot be broken using these particular techniques. If this guy had solid double unders or over unders, whatever... He's kinda lightly resting his hand on Erik's back and letting him posture up. His poor technique is what's allowing his guard to be broken, plain and simple.

  • @karidaty I'd say the one's where he spins out of it and goes for knee-bars would be hard to do if he had a real tight lockdown, but still not undoable especially if you set it up with the first move. However, these are tough moves to pull off as most escapes from secure positions like the lockdown are.

  • Yeah, ummm... good luck breaking Eddie Bravo's lockdown like that. If your training partner knew how to control posture it would be a little harder to run through him. SCIENCE!!!

  • @karidaty Yeah, Erik would break eddie's lockdown like that.

  • I liked the passes in the vid, but some of the footlocks and ankle locks you may have trouble getting if the opponent is looking to whip up as soon as you move your weight down to attack the foot and ankle

  • Have had the privelage to be taught by Erik Paulson, he is incredible in all aspects of martial arts, JKD, Kali, stand-up arts and especially the ground. He is also one really funny guy and alot of fun to learn from !

  • is it me or is it that eric paulson loves hurting people? what a douche.

  • if there are smart why wouldnt they just come up with you? its better to grab under their legs and butt tightly and sprawl as hard and as fast as you can

  • Im pretty sure what he did to that asian was a hate crime...

  • whats with the clicking of the fingers

  • The problem with this is that the guy on the bottom does not have the lockdown in properly, there's no tight double underhooks and his legs are nowhere near as extended as they should be. I like some of these guy's videos, but this one is garbage.

  • @HIIMMIKE123 Body difference between the two men, the asian's legs aren't long enough to properly secure it. You won't get a move perfect everytime on every person. And a counter like this can work.

  • this is awsome i cant wait to try it

  • I find it crazy how some can so easily criticise these moves. Lockdown isn't exclusive or invented by 10thPJJ. And the IDL is shown not only by Paulson and some catch guys, but Demian Maia (Science of Jiu Jitsu 2) and the Submission101 guys who are 10thPJJ affiliates. If it doesn't work for you there's a good chance you're doing something wrong.

  • This guy is a fuckin genius!!! I love it!!

  • really good stuff, makes a person think about all of the things you can do from this. cacc

  • Erik Paulson vs Twister Eddie anyone? cuz its easy to break the lockdown of someone who hasnt mastered it. but Eddie isnt this dude. Monster against Monster

  • @MarcRodriguezMMA Eddie used to train with Erik... He mentions it in one of his books. He has a move that he calls the Paulson.

  • @synergyma01 oh shit i never new that. eddie does talk about incorporating wrestling into his twister side control

  • @MarcRodriguezMMA Eddie and Erik both learned under the Machados, Eddie under Jean Jacques and Erik under Rigan (though different timelines). Just Erik was already adept in subs from Shooto Catch wrestling which is why he's a good leglock guy. One of Erik's MMA fights in the early 1990's was won using the inverted triangle like Jorge Masvidal did in Bellator last year. He's a great guy to learn from if you're in Orange County.

  • This dude come off like a jackass...I'd never train with the douche bag

  • @maleeyang , you don't even know him, you base your opinion on someone by watching a youtube video, and then you call HIM a douchebag? I think maybe you need to look in the mirror if you want to see a douchebag.

  • @brucew22 Oh SNAP son, you just put me in my place somethin' fierce!

I didn't mean to hurt your little feelings, go suck him off if your on his D*** that hard, I thought he came off like a dick who took pleasure in hurting his training partners so I called him a douche...deal with it.

  • Erik is the shit! Love his game, just does what works!!

  • Fuck Eddie and his pipe, Erik actually proved his worth on the mat and in the ring. What's the purpose of developing a supposedly different branch of jiu jitsu if you (the creator) never really applied it to mma or more grappling tournaments? Eddie makes an achievement of beating royler but both didn't even win adcc that year. WTF?

  • i used to hate rubber gaurd and the lockdown but now i love it because when somebody lay and prays or when i get stuck in half gaurd i use them.

and guys saying "this isn't the lock down" this is a demonstration.

you don't freekin see one of eddie bravo's studen't posturing up with both hands on his hips when eddie's trying to show his rubber gaurd or half gaurd. his student breaks his own posture because thats just a humble way to be a good dummy for the person who's demonstrating.

  • none of these work sorry eric!

  • i got told they just open their lockdown up and go to butterfly guard when you do the standing up move?

  • Not very nice to his partner lol

  • wow, great stuff. my brain is actually full

  • does he ever injure anyone in these vids? he always makes guys squirm in the vids. lool

  • I think we will all agree that there are literally tons of techniques in both judo and western style wrestling...but look at the competitions most of those that do well at high lvl have won with the same 3 or 4 techniques...yet they KNOW a ton more.....knowing in case you need is better than not knowing when you do need.

  • I think it's good to have an initial move, which would be kind of like the Cat's. When that fails, you should already have a setup to a second move in your mind, and maybe a third, to keep the flow going.

  • what if there was no tree?

  • Ok the fox and cat story, which I have also heard many times let me give a continuation of it....the cat runs up the tree and as it is looking smuggly down at the fox is grabbed by a passing eagle and carried away......the moral?...well although the mental log jam holds true it is always good to have several options and to have techniques or tactics to back up the initial or in case the initial is impractical.

  • I love Paulson. I use more of his stuff than anything else in my MMA program. It's the most longstanding high percentage material in my toolbox for real.

  • erik paulson is the greatest

  • What do you learn to come up with what works for you as an individual? Or do you just do, and teach what your teacher taught you? ;)

Look in your inbox to the responce to your message to me.

  • Like Rodney Dangerfield says, I would rather see the movie then I am out in two hours. heheheh, no I don't know the story. All I know is knwledge is power as long as you have the reflex to utilize that knowledge spontaniously. ;)

  • The daily decrease leads to limitations. Whats a JKD person who eliminates so much going to do in worse case scenarios with limited tool and knowledge. Sorry but there are some ancient styles that have been proven effective for a few thoasand years and still exist today in some tribes due to what the content is. There is nothing wrong with learning them to increase knowledge to ensure a complete self defense background covering all angles.

  • However I will give you this...I have seen many a JKD person who is a jack of all trades and master of none. There are also some very good ones as well.

  • Word.

  • One thing is about people like the late Larry Hartsell, Dan Inosanto and Eric Paulson is they give credit to where credit is due. They can blend and they can seperate. Either way, they say, "this is JKD" or "this is Dumog" etc, etc. They do not call it all JKD per se like many say they do. To me, its more the love for discovering whats out there due to their passion for martial arts over and above making any claims as to what is what.

  • This is for sport, right? Because otherwise, you might as well just nut him, surely?

  • If I may interject here. They DO teach JKD. What would make you think the person who was left in charge by BL himself does not teach JKD? It just so happens that they went beyond JKD the way Bruce Taught it and learned other areas. But they still teach JKD the way BL taught it to them. Do not listen to stupid rumors put out by closed minded people. Go see for yourself first. And look into it more than just a video or a seminar or two.

  • listen to yourself. You actually think you know more about JKD than Tackett and Inosanto. You are so deluded and full of yourself that I would be wasting my time talking to you. While you are regurgitating JKD philosophy, I will spend my time training.

  • been training with both Inosanto and Tackett since 1985, as a matter of fact. I live in socal, not the UK like you do. Anyone that knows anything about JKD respects both of them, and knows that they teach real JKD. For you to try to say they don't makes it sound like you know more about JKD than they do, and that just ridiculous. You should try actually knowing what you are talking about before you make a comment about something.

  • the minute you said Tackett and Inosanto are fake, you lost any chance of me being civil. You know nothing about Tackett and Inosanto, and nothing about JKD, and that is very apparent. Save your idiocy for someone that doesn't know you are full of shit.

  • calling Tackett and Inosanto fake shows that you are a complete idiot. Please walk in front of a bus.

  • @theawakener7 you should be proud to have erik as a former jkd practitioner.

  • To me, Erik's stuff seems analytical and innovative. I don't see that Brazilian black belt death stare about him, but coach and a trainer who is at the cutting edge and looking to use his knowledge to help people train. I'm impressed.

  • @tlapower There is this other guy called Tony Cecchine he does really interesting grappling including something called hooking which is suppose to tear the body badly i wonder if Erik Paulson does that i know that he trains in catch wrestling

  • @Mider999

Isnt hooking just another name for wrestling?

  • TRY THAT TO EDDIE BRAVO!!

  • your a machine

  • Erik is not a "fake" JKD instructor. He has rankings in JKD under Tackett and Inosanto. As to whether he teaches it or not, he does teach certain aspects of JKD, such as half beat hitting, lead leg pendulum round and side kicks, etc. But not the entire art.

  • Erik Paulson is the man !!! XD

  • Eric is a great instructor for MMA I don't know how is he in the other individual styles, but I know for a fact he is a great MMA coach.

  • @MartinezMuayThai He is a Genious in everything he does! JKD, KALI, JUiJiTS, Muay Thai. Man, Erik Is The Man!

  • I remember Erik he used to be in MMA way back in the days, what happened to him? He was known for crazy leg locks!

  • yeah, I would rather talk in person at this point anyways.

  • I didn't threaten to beat up your face, although I certainly would enjoy that. What I said was (this is after you joked about what Erik looked like after his fight with James Warring) is that his face didn't look as bad as your face will look if you ever show up at our gym.

  • and I stand by mine.

  • whats between you and bruce is between you. im just saying your comment about erik was bs, uncalled for, and incorrect. he's one of the best.

  • no no, i mean erik paulson and his student. they've been training together for a long time and know each other well, and erik knows how far he can take the locks, he's been doing it for a long long time, and fought pro for many years as well.

  • @kempobrad Erik was undefeated in shooto for about 5 years. He was a great fighter in his time.

  • evidently you don't get it either, they were horsing around. lighten up man.

  • bottom line..you don't know erik paulson. you judged a man by watching a video. you admit you insulted his teacher...why are you so surprised that he was offended? lol

  • willparadigm is a frickin moron. Go back and read the chain of messages in order. I was calmly explaining to him that Erik is a good guy, etc, and then he starts insulting Erik, and then like a moron wonders why I got upset. He is still too stupid to admit he was out of line.

  • at least he had the balls to get in there and usually win. threatenng to beat your face or what not was a bit immature. but you did insult his teacher. who is a great guy btw. they were just messing around, erik knows what he's doing..the guy was laughing afterall.

  • this "technique" is for use against those who are doing the lockdown wrong - no squeeze, no extension. this is funny.

  • yup, I give up too. Reasoning with you is trying trying to reason with a monkey.

But don't forget, you have an open offer to come by the gym and take one free lesson. Tell em Bruce sent you.

  • you make fun of Erik's face after the James Warring fight, and then wonder why someone would want to punch you?

  • I really don't care if you change your opinion on Erik. You have made your mind up after watching a 5 minute video.

You don't see me getting on a public forum and bad mouthing ANY instructors, especially legends such as Erik. From what I can tell, you are a 10th planet JJ student, and I have nothing but respect for Eddie Bravo and his cadre of instructors. I am surprised someone at your age thinks it is ok to call a well known respected instructor a "dick" on a youtube.

  • he was demonstrating a technique for a video. He wants to make sure that everyone understand it works. That smaller student is an instructor under Erik as I am, and doesn't mind him demonstrating a hold like that for a video.

You never considered apologizing for starting this whole thing off by calling Erik a dick on a public forum, have you?

  • Go back and read your posts. You started off by calling Erik a dick, and I didn't get upset, just told you that he is a nice guy and you don't know him. Then, you called him a dumbass for not cutting his hair. Then you asked me what his face looked like after he fought Warring in a smartass way. That is when I got pissed, and I think anyone reading the chain of messages would agree that you were out of line. This is a public forum, and you seem to enjoy denigrating a legend in MMA.

  • oh and by the way, far as messing up your face, I was talking in the cage. And this was after you made fun of what Erik's face looked like after his fight with James Warring, which by the way was in 1995. You were probably like 10 years old then.

  • who said anything about wanting to kill you? And you are a complete moron, you get on a public forum and bad mouth a legend like Erik Paulson, and then act surprised and offended when someone like myself gets upset about it. If anyone has done a disservice, it is you, badmouthing Erik on a public forum. Go back and read your comments.

  • go to Erik's website and figure out yourself. Come by sometime for a free lesson.

  • are you a moron? You are talk about Erik like that, and think I am not also going to exercise my rights to tell you off? I don't want to "assault" you, I was hoping you would be man enough to square off. Instead you prefer to hide behind your computer like the loser that you are.

  • I didn't say I was nice and humble. Start talking about my friend that way, and you are damned right, I am going to speak up. I am sure you are too much of a keyboard warrior pussy to actually come down to Eriik's gym and talk that way. But I sure wish you would, you could learn a good lesson in manners.

  • not near as bad as your face is going to look if you ever get the guts to come down to CSW and talk like that.

  • I was in Erik's corner for that fight. He didn't cut his hair because he had a movie part that required him to have long hair. You are the fucking dumbass for talking about him like that.

  • your loss. He is a legend in MMA and submission grappling.

  • Erik Paulson is one of the nicest, most humble instructors I have ever trained with. You obviously have never met him.

  • This is disappointing...

this is what you do against traditional half guard; if you can stand or get your leg out, your opponent is doing it wrong.

  • that is a good technique but he is doing the lockdown wrong. its not extend its squeez

  • you are an idiot

  • vagina lock down.

  • even sambo has a version of the"lockdown"

  • That kid wasn't doing a eddie bravo lockdown, you have to be squeezing that leg. You want to essentially be trying to squeeze as hard as you would choke someone, so you will be able to take some of the effectiveness of his base away from him. The lockdown isnt a 100% sure thing, but some of those defenses Paulson displayed wouldnt always work.

  • yeah I guess you would know better than Erik does, because you have rolled so much more than he has.

  • I'm not taking anything away from Erik, the guys a friggin legend in the submission grappling scene, trust me I know that. But my point is, against a high level 10th planet jj player, not all those defenses would work effectively; especially the very last submission he showed with the sort of figure four lock. Again, I'm not taking anything away from the man... just merely making a comment.

  • why do you say a against a high level 10th planet jj player, and not just a high level jj player? Is 10th planet jj that much better than all other jj?

  • 10th planet promotes the lockdown. And these work, but not all the time, just like everything else. But a player could use these attempts to sweep. I play the lockdown and use these counters too. Its cat and mouse.

  • judo uses the lockdown also.

  • true some will work better than others on certain fighters but thats why sensai showed us so many different kinds

  • Reason why is Mr Paulson is much bigger and if use str and size it will work alot. At Idaho semenar working with Ari we learned some very good escapes one was the Butt Blast, and the Capo Pass.

  • come too zuma and try it on me

  • mean so learn something or you think it will not work? If get enough I will help ya with showing ya that my friend

  • @statechamp86, i know this move works i use it all the time... I don't even know what i was commenting on with that last thing i said, i thought it was against some one shit talking Eric.

  • Why does he snap his fingers to tap..... strange

  • It's an alternative to tapping the mat, perhaps quicker and less annoying then saying "Tap"...

  • I guess, its something that would get on my nerves thats for sure hahah!

  • i think its clever to snap your fingers when sparring. This will build an alternative reflex action to tapping which in a comp would mean the end of a fight. you can unknowling and reactivly tap when your body thinks its in danger but the head knows its okay. Could also be if they hear a snap/click they know to stop too :-)

  • It's fucking annoying.

  • It is real easy, Just go down to CSW in orange county and take a class. Ask to roll with him he will, he never hides behind his students. Then come back and let us no how it went with your half guard lock down Lolol

  • I respect Erik Paulson and all but that is a weak lockdown. Both of his legs should be locked over the calf at the very least. That "lockdown" can be escaped by just about anybody.

  • When it comes to leglocks there are few people I would rather have teach me than Mr Paulson. I am inclined to believe him if he says this will work.

  • Instead of dividing into nut hugging camps and insulting each other, perhaps you'd all be better served by expanding your horizons.

Erik Paulson is a grappling and MMA legend. I dismiss on it's face any suggestion that he would demonstrate BS technique.

The lockdown being demonstrated isn't the JJ or 10th planet version, but the catch wrestling version.

The escapes and counters work on either version.

Quit acting like romo's and look beyond your own borders. It's a big world :)

  • That is most retarded lockdown I've seen. Number 1. Number 2, the technique is going to work for white belts on his their first day of training who will just lay down there and not do anything to counter.

  • I do agree, breaking the lockdown is not that easy but Paulson is still a genius.

  • THAT IS NOT THE LOCKDOWN!!!!!!!! Do your homework DA@*.

  • No disrespect to Erik Paulson, he makes some very good points, but I agree that is not the Lockdown. Everything he demonstrated would still be valid as demonstrated, just not for the 10PJJ Lockdown.

  • yeah, i have to agree, but i totally dig erik paulson too. i'd like to see him give some instruction against a 10PJJ style lockdown.

  • Just look for the submissions 101 vid on this....credits to mr. Paulson :-)

  • You actually watch Submissions101? On purpose??

  • hahaha .. yeah... it's pretty good to get some ideas to apply on the mat dude :-)

  • Paulson is the man - thanks for posting vid

  • Can you try with a resisting, bigger guy. the dummy you train with is much smaller so you can easily reach for his legs and other parts of his body. His legs are almost the same size as your arms so you can submit him easily.... just want to see if this will really work. thanks.

  • Hey... who you callin a dummy?!? :)

  • the small guy who cant stop laughing

  • I seriously dought that both of his legs will break before your single one does but I do believe the submission will work.

  • What do you mean? Which technique are you talking about?

  • mabye the one where he's using one of his legs to TRY to break both of yours?!

  • Well, he's not doing that in any of those techniques, that's why I asked, but I assume you mean the one where he's standing up. The reason the move works, is because when Eric stands up, he puts his foot in the mat where his leg is stable and at the same time putting his opponent in a position where his legs are crossed and twisted outwards and his own body weight is resting upon those legs, making them powerless. It's very painful and it is possible to surprise the opponent with it sometimes.

  • Awesome leg locks. Eric is great. Love the knee buster/indian death lock.

  • Thanks Eric very entertaining as always!

  • Awesome Brian...I like the Knee Buster where Erik stands up. (btw, my sound was off-sync throughout the video...)

  • Erik Paulson is amazing!!!!!!!! I train 10th Planet and this video is definitely not what a 10th planet person wants to see. Thanks

  • To me, with the lockdown you always straightened your legs, lifting the guys leg up, destroying his base, which Paulson's partner wasnt doing, he was just sort of lying there in a crappy traditional half guard position and with a pretty much non existant hooks (which is how Paulson could grab his toes), whereas proper Lockdown has either over-under or two unders, each with the gable grip (which you cant break just by leaning towards the feet. I dunno man, seemed a bit weak to me.

  • If the guy straightens your legs, you just lift your foot and turn it out like Erik said in the video (0:35 - 0:50).

If he uses a "whip up" he will undo his gable grip for you and if you're on the ball you can time it so that it's relatively easy to stand up while he moves you upward and forward. Otherwise you just put a forearm in his throat or across his face.

And dude, where we come from, its cool to let the demonstrator show you the move, rather than resisting every which way possible.
