Depends of the character's health. Suppose it was low, when the car entered it changed the car's trajectory Niko was able to be touched by the car's door.

Maybe there something under like a plateau.

If you look at the body as it exits the car, you can see that it passes right next to the spinning car. The immediate high-speed impact of "car on Niko" basically acted the same as if Niko walked in front of oncoming traffic that was going at jet take-off speeds, instantly killing him before he got within 30 feet of the water (based on the visible floors of the building to the camera's right, assuming 10 feet per floor and that Niko is at the top of the third level.

why would he jump out in the first place??? all he had to do is wait for the car to hit the water then he could of gotten out and got back to shore safely. but he had to jump out. and it was all neck impact. the car just passed right through him so he died by neck impact, glitch, or RockStar just thought of everything. it's that simple.

Easy , water turns into a rock depending at wich velocity and high you hit it , and landing with the back of the neck as MikSevilla said will instakill you, ( I mean IRL , dunno if Rockstar made water have that effect) so either it's a bug , or Rockstar thought of everything :P

this is to all of you people who says that i jumped outta heli and survived when i hit the water.you wanna know the reason? have you ever noticed niko supporting his head and crouched up like a ball? there ya go. plus most of the scenarios is you jumping out and falling straight down. in this he was high speed not protecting himself, back vunerable then splashed to the water. he probally injured his back or snapped his neck. i think this is called the whiplash effect.
