  • This is a great video

  • Bad. Sounds flat like my old drum machine. Needs more dynamics.

  • That's amazing

  • Sounds like the theme song to Beverly hills cop.

  • 1:03

  • good call on the SSL comp.

  • HOW do you Record your screen in Protools "Cam Studio"? Ive been having problems with this...I use Cam studio..I can record anything else through my PCI card, but dont cant get audio when I try to record tutorials.

  • 1:04 uuahhhheeuHHHHHH

  • Great info! Got my kick sound now! One would think that a deeper kick would do the job. But audio is a strange beast when challenged. Thankyou!!

  • 1:03 sample this for a hit dubstep track

  • @SyncFyller lol

  • Hey m8... great tutorials :) I'm having a bit of bother with getting nice snares for my dnb... any tips?

  • where i can get that compressor ?

  • @tushar223 you dont need that exact compressor-seriously...just download a handful and see which one you prefer...alot of them are quite good/do nearly the exact same thing...:)buy wave arts powersuite 5...great plug-ins for not alot of money..

  • @tushar223 its the waves SSL eq - comp combo, think its in the diamond package from waves.com mate

  • I may just sample your voice at 1:05. It sounds like the grudge!

  • i like dnb with subby kick, sidechaining works fine here, there's a real lack of proper mixes in Dnb with all this super cutting of freqs that might clash, Doesn't sound great.

  • gud stuff man, u want bass but i fink ur idea making the sound more prominant is more importand i produce hard house i feel u just need to hear only bit of bass ull have the main bassline come in anywayz

  • @vinel22 u stil want a 'thump' tho lol

  • I would like to know which was your default kick drum. Is it a part of a plugin in Cubase 5?

  • what's that plug in Solid state logic?? is it cubase 5 content?

  • @lych14 It's the ssl 4000 plugin from waves. It's available in vst and rtas but it's pretty spendy.

  • @lych14 It's the SSL4000 plugin from waves.

  • good video man

  • Can I send you a drum loop and you can tell me how I should mix it ? please ?

  • Back again to say this is a really really nice setup for dnb, I started making dnb about 6 month ago, and been looking for a compression to give my kicks that extra bump. Just picked up SSL and it really did the trick for me.

The only thing I need now is a thorough walk through of beat compression, because I haven't really understood what everything does yet.

You know any good tutorials explaining the basis of compression?

    Thanks a lot for sharing!

  • Great bump! Really good tutorial. Thanks for sharing.

  • hey can you eq that sound you make at 1:04 ? it's not sitting to well in the mix. lol

  • Ur a de esser israel95 then compress slightly

  • hey mate im in the process of purchasing a dsp. Im tossing up between liquid mix 16 or ssl pcie card. Just wondering what your thourghts of each are. SSl is alot more expensive but ill save a few more pennies if its worth the extra $

  • @chewydeejay

SSL is going native soon so dont get the duende. Theyre both good. I personally prefer the SSL

  • @chewydeejay GET THE SSL!

  • Where can i find good original kick drum sounds like that? and dont say sample packs cause i got about 100000 and their all shocking.

  • @MrLiquidthought microtonic?

  • nice tutorial man thanks :)

  • oh and I scratch my head at some new trance stuff like testio . The music seem very soft and yet bright . Do pros master each sound then mix them then master the whole track .... I would like to see how the mix sounds before mastering .

  • what is the best compressor for sidechaining ? Im working on a deep trance track right now and not to happy with Cubase Compressor for sidechaining. it takes away some of the natural sound but I need the Airy like Duck. Anyone who would like to check it out il post it to get help on it ..

  • what's the program?

  • @verteful Steinberg Cubase

  • @durimi14 Thanks

  • a problem im having is that my vocals will have peeks like if a say something with a T or something and yes i have a pop filter but its still very loud and harsh on the ears... when i try to compress it the whole track is compressed... do u have any advice?

  • hey i've got a question about cubase. so if I buy cubase 5, does it come with eq's and compressors and some basic effects all wrapped into it or do i need to buy those separately with other programs?

  • What about the snare? :OOOO Make a tutorial? :D

  • "a compressor like this" *facepalm*

  • Is there something in a pro master mix that makes your tracks sound good on youtube ?

  • I have a Good question ! Why is it when I upload audio to youtube it sounds awful !! ? But then I hear other mixes that sound clear and clean ! Not saying I cant mix well but youtube seems to be anti-underground music . So I just stopped posting music on youtube and looking for a good music site thats not Myspace music or soundclick

  • kick sounds really in the mix, fits perfectly, good job

  • how is this snare sound (sample) called ?

  • what cubase is that!? it looks noooice!

  • lol, so glad tech has advanced since the past. back in 90' i was stuck having to use fuckin triggers to tweak & dampen my kicks. hi-frequency kicks ass though.

  • Yes but what program is this and what is the name of the effect you are tweeking it on???

  • @GanEdenAustralia he is using (cubase 4)as the D.A.W. and (waves ssl400) for eq. and compressor.

  • Well done!

  • '' LITTLE MORE MID '' ??? MID IN THE KICK ??? I dont think you should be spreading faulty information mate. INSTEAD OF THAT dig a huge hole between 350 - 550 hz in the kick drum track....

  • @kanank7

He's not spreading faulty info, you are just retarded.

  • @AquaDonkey

Oh really? and who the fuck r u sir? what do you do in the music industrie? so get lost kid!

  • What plugin are you using here?

  • Great tips for that genre. I produce primarily live bands, and find the principles applied to kick processing almost completely opposite in my work. It's interesting:

2-3db boost between 55-62Hz; 5-10db reduction between 200-300Hz, and a 3-6db boost between 2-4k to bring out the beater. For a punchy, tight live kick, it's a great formula. Cheers!

  • very informative, thanks for taking the time to teach.

  • guess your also a pendulum fan ^^

  • What's the compressor you are using?

  • @HarakiriGTR That's the compressor that's part of the Waves SSL Channel-strip plugin and he's using it in Cubase, Nuendo, Cubendo, or Nuebase, or whatever you want to call Steinberg's DAW's these days. lol..

  • @BluesUnchained Thanks for the tip! :)

  • sidechain the bass Teach me what that means I want to learn !! Also do you have a video teaching what each knob will do please . Iv been playing Piano for 14 years but now I want to lay it out on audio . Please teach me something !!

  • awesome tipz!!! 5/5!

  • i use the waves api eq.. sounds awsome... and ozone 4 as my master limiter

  • next time.. EQ your voice. maybe a HPF at about 140 Hz.

  • @Anzel1023

    agreed :o)

  • @Anzel1023 not bad!:)

  • @Anzel1023 LOLOL

  • @Anzel1023 lol

  • i for one like a fatty tub sound with low sub .. i guess cuz u guys are white u automatically hi pass filter around 25 hurts

i love a nice 50 cycle boost not to much u can mess a mix up by going crazzy but a lil bit goes a long way dont just roll it off.. its not a vocal its a kick drum .. its okay for it to sound like it has balls.. i have a krk v 12 sub

  • You roll off the low end in DnB because you're going to have a huge 60Hz-ish sub bass sitting under it. That has enough "balls" without a subby kick to interfere with it.

  • @johnthesoundman 'i guess cuz u guys are white u automatically hi pass filter around 25 hurts'

WHAT? What the fuck has being white got to do with anything?

  • Hertz abbreviated Hz

  • @djveto

Sorry, I dont need you to correct me - I know that Hz is the abbreviation, I was quoting someone else because they seemed to be making a race/skin colour issue issue. Read and understand the context things are written in before you comment/correct people ok?

  • @tubemech i noticed when every i see a live show if a white guy is manning the bord theres no low end but if a black guy is doing the sound shyt is thick!!..lol

  • AngellOfficial for your info a Urei 1176 is a Limiter :). if your looking for a good eq from the 80's find your self a GML 8200 or full or mid range Pultec,

woutvgelder any lower than 40 HZ is insane and nearly inaudible low end travels like the flu so be carefull. also this vid is a little less than informative kick recomendations from a pro. boost a bit of 100-150 HZ and boost 3-4.5 k will get you the beater ( snap) also play with your gate and compresion atack and realease to make punchy.

  • @djveto Aware of that! and i have solid eqs already, SSL 4000 Series and they are fantastic!

  • @ Iluvtrance69, you must have something in your ears, you NEED and iLok to try it b4 you buy it wiseguy! To you all, I am a Pro Engineer and if you all keep using shitty stuff, your end product will continue to be shitty

  • U don't need a Ilok!!! I can prove it!! I have every plug in waves made!! No Ilok over here!!

  • @Vstjunkie your on a PC arent you haha! PIRATE! Support Waves, dont steal shit!

  • @AngellOfficial Yeah, hahahahaha

  • the part at 1:04 when he explains proper use of the audio term "ahhhhh" is awesome

  • hey that sounds really good

  • thanks for the tip yo.

    (Benson and Tonic)

  • Hey, I have a Roflcopter and it's about to take off. It's ready to blast off into the sky soon, so come join me. LOL LOL Lollll!!!!

Yay 4 roflcopters. it's taking off people, so get inside it and we'll fly about :D

  • Dumb.

  • @heros2zeros

    Greatest comment ever. :D

  • We should fly about in a Roflcopter because it's fun doing that. When you fly about and everyone lols. It's amazing. LOL!!! :D:D:D:D:D

  • Do a tutorial on a snare drum plllllleeeeeeeeeeeeeease? I love this drum sound, and i want it!

  • can you explain - HPW to compress kick in FL STUDIO ??

  • Comment removed

  • A compressor/limiter is a band-aide solution. Use the right head combination. Tune the drum and EQ properly. If you are using take n' bake sounds, become very skilled with EQ. Remember; when equalizing, you can boost very little but you can cut to the extremes. Overall clarity is the goal.

  • Alot of differnt drum patterns and differents need a different sounding kick and snare....Mostly the slower and more steady the kicks are , the heavier they have to sound to sound good. In this case, the drum rytym is quite quick, so it needs a more 'light' exprience, so the snare and kick are more equal, and blend together more as one. It just depends on the style, and mostly on the speed and pattern for drums you're using what sounds best.

  • Wow! The comments were more entertaining than the vid. Great info though.

To all that are hating on this guy's technique, make sure you know what you're talking about before you go ranting on Youtube.

Compression is not just to even sounds, but to shape the volume envelope, just in most cases, the desired shape is flat. Here, that's not the case, as you want a sharp pop and cut the tail to silence.

  • Sweet! Another Cubase fan!

  • dont get me wrong people, this isnt a guideline for all kicks in all genres. It just may be applicable in some styles of DnB. If i were to boost the fundamental of this kick (approx 60-80Hz) then it would clash with the sub. I could do that but then would need to sidechain the bass so not to clash. Tis just a guide, not the holy grail of guides. U guys dont have to be so serious :o) For DnB, kicks below 80Hz need rolling off generally, not always. Its just a guideline!

  • @specialistsound what is the sub please tell me and what does it do how does it fit in the production

  • @YoungMalcomX1 he talkin about deep bass sounds. look up sub bass on youtube if you need to hear it

  • hey mate.just wondering where i can get this compressor your using.went on solid state logic's site and duende also but cant find this exact compressor.

  • @DtANE86 this exactly plugin is called ssl4000 bundle from waves just go to (waves.com)

  • @specialistsound And a damn sweet one if this your lucky. This was the perfect solution for a few of my tracks!

If anyone would ever say that "this is a wrong way to compress" then they are not thinking about what they are saying.

There are literary millions of ways to tweak and fiddle with every single little detail of every sound in every single digital track ever made, so please don't be so daft to say there is a wrong way of doing something in general =)

  • @FinalFragment I agree! There is no wrong way to mix, everything is subjective and in the end, the finished product is all that matters and no one, will be able to tell what you did if you did it right.

  • what your saying cannot be applied to every genre... this guy is talkin about DnB, and what he is talkin about most DnB guys do.... whats there to hate?

  • I compared Waves SSL and DSP Board SSL with the same settings, they sound different, DSP sounds more natural, and yes, i have SSL Duende

  • It sounds good with the SSL Comp but you could eq it (properly) first and take some of that low end out. Then maybe you wouldnt need to be so aggressive with the comp? To me it just sounded like the kick had more attack but the annoying bass frequencies were still there, albeit not as dominating and noticeable as before. Also, I thought it ended up too loud in the mix.

You should take frequencies out before adding them shouldnt you?

    Thats just MHO anyway.

  • maybe it sound good in your studio , but in a club it gonna sound awfull ...

  • This trick works with modern electronic and dance styles of music because all your really listening too is the ambience of compression and eq. Its like it breathes.

There is so much 'noise' up there, you need to add hi freq to a bassdrum just to hear it.

Tradtionally, this is actually a bad mix being over compensated, but for drum and bass in this example, it sounds more exciting since drums are the focus.

  • Without Duende DSP board, SSL EQ is crap...

  • Why Crap ..... isn't they same vst

Do you have the Duende DSP board ?

  • hey......thx to ya! had the same probs and no

mixing tutorials helped me, but your video did!

    greetz

  • IT'S FREAKING CUBASE!

  • its Cubase... and I think the EQ is Waves SSL EQ... not the gratest sounding EQ.. but its good.

  • what's better as a plugin?

  • "not the greatest sounding EQ.. but it's good. "

    LOL LOL

    But I understand.

I said the same thing few years ago, and I said that because i knew nothing about sound and EQing.

Today, I only use SSL and API.

    And you will soon.

Just because they are the greatest EQ ever made on vst.

    :D

  • I am not saying SSL stuff are bad.. have you used PULLTEC EQs? (I dont know if they make plugin virsions... but why not)

If you used pulltec right.. I doubt you come back for SSL..

Also, try NEVE, Universal Audio.. cant beat them.

  • Whats wrong with the SSL? are u a fan of the API collection? Sonnox oxford?

  • Disagree, the SSL G & E series Eqs are probally some of the most frequently used Eqs in the music industry (Plugins or Externally), topped off with the all famous SSL Stereo Buss Compressor, if you have the cash, SSL eqs and compression will never disappoint. if you have a Dongle iLok, go to Waves and download a demo and see if you dont miss it when the demo is up

  • what program is that??

  • It looks like the Sonar 7

  • but its cubase

  • cubase

  • Nice!

  • The bass should leave room for the kick, and all the midrange instruments should leave room for the bass.

I would use hi-pass filters on most instruments above the bass to leave room. Another trick is EQing the kick and bass towards different frequenies; one high, the other low. Doesn't matter which, could be bass around 100Hz and kick around 50-60Hz, but together you get so much more clarity that way than attempting to mesh them together along with the lows from the guitars.

  • nice example......people forget that kick should be 'snappy' best word for it ....leaves room for bass instruments

  • Thats helped me alot, thanks for that, ive been having trouble with coliding frequencies. Thats a tight Kick and snare sample youve got, ive been looking for samples like that for ages!

    take it easy

  • Nice.

  • 15 Hz ???

    People can't hear 15 Hz ;)

Our ears go from 20 Hz to 20.000 Hz (20 KHz)

  • shuurup ye blonk

  • You can feel 15 Hz though.

  • Yes, feel, but not hear it :P

And manny speakers are stopping at 35 Hz.

    And subs at 20 Hz.

  • he says 50 Hz

  • Yeah, he said 50hz not 15hz. I'm sure your pitch conception can't be that bad. Beside, human are animal. Dogs are animal too. How come they can hear 15hz and we can't. Not cool man.

  • Oooo, okay.

    Mistake.

    Shame on myself ;)

But I think, dogs had an other hearingsystem than humans.

  • WE are not animals NathanLee0921.. We are Humans.. Animal cells are diff from humans. Too much Darwin on your system...

New borns and very young kids can hear well but as you grow old, 20kHz is a thing of the past..

And yes to your question... a compressor smacks down anything pass the threshold you set to attenuate.... Can also be used to accent transient..

AND for all.. 44khz is already High Def.. any other square harmonics over 44k is a waste of hard disc space.

  • @woutvgelder , Glad someone knows that, i always see sessions people send me where kids are trying to pump out low frequencies from there sub and kick. SECRET is though, on on your kicks and subs and basses, come up with a method where you can boost between 30hz and 80hz and cutoff at 25hz, reason being, in the club when your shit is playing loud, noone can hear below 25 hz, its just unwanted muddy noise

  • "come up with a method where you can boost between 30hz and 80hz and cutoff at 25hz,"

    Use a 31-band EQ + compressor / multiband-compressor.

End a 25 Hz hipass is great ;)

  • can you do a snare vid as well please? i like the song also, want to send it to me!?

  • Comment removed

  • Is this song finished? I like it = )

  • Handy advice! I'm curious as to what VST you're using for compressing / EQing the drums though. I haven't seen that one before!

  • Waves SSL compressor is used in this video...

...good sounding but not good as API or UAD stuff :)

  • for your info, waves ssl eqs and UAD eqs are modeled after the same types of outboard eqs made in hte 80s! Like the 1176 UA

  • good stuff mate. i'm sure a lot of guys really appreciate this info. keep it coming.

  • really nice sounding track/

  • "I know very little about recording"

    yeah. i can tell.

  • you clearly know little about recording mate, so zip it if your gonna slate stuff you dont know jack shi** about.

  • thats not a real kick whats the point of adding comp ?????????

  • ? what do you mean exactly? sounds like a kick to me....

  • Nice video, and nice mix!

  • it's amazing how such a simple effect can affect the output so much.

  • what compression vst are you using? thanks!

  • He is using waves - SSL 4000 channel strip

  • not at all Fukdyamum..Clipping in a 24 bit domain is still (even tho i may have the headroom) a no no. Dianna gutted is right. where a limiter can brickwall a signal over a threshold (given the algorithm/VC spectrum of given wiring within given hardware amps/comps etc), a compressor allows you to shape the sound (similar to an ADRR) to alter given points within with ADSR to how you want it and by how much.

You're over criticising for the sake of it. At least lets banter in dialogue :o)

  • The compression setting used allows for the first part of the kick to come through before the compression effects the tail, this gives a snappy sound. The EQ before the compressor is used to bring up the higher frequencies and the compressor controls it. A compressor is not just a limiter it can also, as in this case be used to alter the shape of the sound.

  • yes by clipping it

  • Yeah that would be one way of altering the shape of the sound and you may want that type of sound but the video shows (although there is no mention of) a compressor set up with a few ms of attack to allow the initial kick of the beat to come through befor the compression is applied.

  • if it sounds good. it is good.

  • @fukdyamum

"a compressor is an adjustable limiter for when u have no room left to gain"

Are you being serious here? If that's all you use compressors for you are seriously missing the point.

Compressors can be used to affect the dynamic qualities of a sound. Compression brings up the overall noise floor while not allowing the sound to clip. So the sound is squashed but not distorted. This means you lose dynamics, but gain phatness.

Without compression dance music would not exist!!

  • set a threshold to -0.1db, set your attack to 0.0ms release to as high as possible there you have a clipper, it can be used for effects also, like sidechaining the bass or synth to the kick, it is to level out dynamics so they sound as full as all the other sounds in the track, dont talk to me like i dont no what i am talking about, its an (adjustable) cliper the reason it makes things more dynamic is, it clips off wave peaks so the quiter elements in the sound will now sound louder

  • So you mean a compressor lower the louder dynamic while keeping the soft dynamic the same? In this way the song will sound more evenly?
