They don't die in water. Otherwise, they'd all be gone when you take a shower. Hot water will kill them, but not as much as dry heat. Heat will kill them. Only that and chemicals. Or something high in oil. Oil suffocates them.

This is why I would do a head lice treatment before I went camping and immediately after getting home from camping. We'd go like a couple of weeks or longer in the woods and there would never be hot water enough to clean up properly. Lice are disgusting.
