I created my own string art in 9th grade art class in 1975 to satisfy at "3-D art requirement" that I had failed with clay -- dirty, messy clay. It got me an "A" at a time when I was messed up and my art teacher hated me. Thank god for string art. The 70s sucked. by the way, and I survived them, thanks in part to string art. I was really a math and science kid, only taking art so I didn't have to take gym with the neanderthals. I had just developed OCD, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.
When I was in middle school we had to take Home Eco. every year for nine weeks. I always looked forward to string art. Ours wasn't as big or on wood. Just a print out with the numbers on it, a piece of black card stock, a plastic needle and embroidery floss. ♥'s to the sound the floss would make going through the card stock.
i actually was stoked when i saw the title of this installment of decor it yourself. in the house i just moved into a few months ago, there is actually two pieces of string art on the walls of the living room. we have an owl & a giraffe. i'll take pictures next chance i get.
Awesome video! I made some of these awhile back and loved them~ One had 7 or so med sized circles all different colors and another was a mushroom kinda abstract looking. Thanks for posting this makes me wanna get it back out and make some more~
It is much easier to make the circle on the board if you cut a piece of string the radius you want and tie it around your pencil and tack it to the board in the center. It will make the whole process go faster.
Oh my goodness!!! I'm in love with this video!!! I have always loved string art, my grandparents have this wicked butterfly on a black velvet background, i think i should ask them if i could borrow it.... Thank yo so much for the idea. P.S. you could probably put a clock in the center of the circular one, that would make a kick butt present for someone.
i have a gravel/sand art thing my mom made when she was younger, its kinda like sand art but for the lines they used black string then colored it is with little colored gravel... she used a soda tab for the hook to hang it by, it is pretty sloppy but its homemade!! LOL
Forever 21 had adorable string art in their display windows for spring. But this was the store on State Street Santa Barbara. I wish I had taken a picture, but oh well maybe one of you can?
Love this!!!! I just bought a piece of art made from yarn not this string art but I love it. I screams 70's! I will post a pic of it on facebook to show you.
Hey Meg - love your show - I love the 70s - I was Born in the late 70s - I have so many 60s-70s things in my flat - My Mama had string Art Butterflies - black velvet background and gold string - I wonder what happened to them!
Hey Meg!!! You should make a video on building chicken coops (even tho u live in the city), because it's a great way to reduce your carbon footprint by eating your own farm fresh eggs!!
that is amazing

I did something like this in 4th grade. I think thinner string rather than yarn would look really neat on the circle, so it looks a bit less solid.
