After reading most of these comments and watching all these videos. I couldn't help but remember all the shows of Oasis performing in Chicago back in the day, being a tejana I also new of La Sombra and my family and I always preferred the music of Oasis. I agree that La Sombra copied many songs from many artists but being part of that era of Oasis at Casino, Mario's & Los Globos I know that El Sapo originally belongs to OASIS MUSICAL.. Thanks for the memories guys..
I give these guys credit for for writing the song, but they're not 10% the band that La Sombra was and IMO La Sombra version of the song is easily much better than the original thats why they were able to go to #1 with it while Oasis went nowhere.
Im my humble opinion, La Sombra was able to reach a higher standing with this song because they were already an established band and had all the airplay connections and promoters in their pocket. La Sombra folks were very good at copying songs from other artists and getting their version to number #1. I grew up watching Oasis in Chicago and they were much more versatile than was the band from Aurora, Illinois - la Sombra. Cumbia is definitelly la Sombra's forte'.
Would you believe that there are a lot of Tejanos in the Midwest? third or fourth generations or even farther back. the Music gets played here, Tejano bands are formed... no surprise there. ; )
A little history on why La Sombra recorded this song. Oasis and La Sombra actually hooked up and did one tour together in Texas. Oasis was promoting "La Cumbia del Sapito" on that tour. Cumbias where not too popular in the Tejano market but this one received alot of airplay. Even on the "Totally Tejano" radio show. After the tour, Oasis and La Sombra parted ways. Oasis decided to go to a bigger market which was the grupero market. It recorded several grupero albums and Toured Mexico and US.
Meanwhile La Sombra stayed in Texas and would continually get asked about Oasis and if the could play "La cumbia de el Sapito". So they decided to start playing it at their dances and finally recorded it. You cannot really compare the two bands. One was a strictly Tejano band while the other started as a pop band, moved on to Tejano because of their recording contract with "Freddie Records", and finally topped it off with some beautiful grupero music.
Let me also add that all of the songs except for 1 or 2 were written by Oasis (you can verify that in their albums). They did not believe in copying other bands material. Did I mention that the Famous Selena was an Oasis fan? When she go to Chicago in the early days, she would always ask where they were playing. Not to take anything away from la Sombra as they were a great band but as cuau said above, "Oasis was more versatile" and loved by many. Not only in the US but in Mexico.
@gomejc Interesting, i remember seeing this performance when i was just a little boy. never really knew the group's name. i knew that la sombra was not the original of el sapo.
I saw this band playing the East End festival here in Houston. Funny thing about his song is that they recorded it first and got nothing, but a few months later....La Sombra covered it and got a number 1 hit for it. I still have the cass. this band made. Thanks for sharing this clip.
Good catch! This is the original band that recorded la cumbia del sapito. This is the band "Oasis de Chicago" who wrote la cumbia del Sapito recorded in Freddy Records back in 1988. It turned out to be a huge hit and the catalyst for cumbias to be accepted among Tex-Mex fans. It was later re-recorded by various other Tejano and Mexican bands. Oasis was the first grupo to add this style Cumbia to the Tex-Mex market. The "original version" is always the BEST!
