This is the VSOP band. I heard it way before this movie even came out and have the solo memorized on trumpet. Sorry, I'm sure the Japanese guys are good, but not this good.
@ezrich12 Exactly. There's no mistaking Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, Wayne Shorter and Freddie Hubbard. I read elsewhere online it was recorded in a studio in New York in 1980, but do you know what album it's on or where you heard it before the movie?
This music is part of what makes Cowboy Bebop so great. When Spike is fighting alongside this music and you feel like he is just moving to the groove.
the song you are thinking of is probably Big P, by Jimmy Heath. I stumbled across it in the fake book, and the A section of Clutch is similar to the head of Big P, most likely based on it.
But it's Japanese musicians!!!!! Not VSOP!!!! Stop spreading lies!!!!
OMG! That's IT! 8D That's the song! Do you have a link for it? If not, I'm sure I'll get a hold of it eventually. Thanks so very much though! A 2 year old mystery, FINALLY solved =)
I've heard a song that sounds VERY similar to this one once. The first 9 seconds are IDENTICAL to a similar jazz song I heard about a year ago. Which is what RIPDarrellAbbott may be reffering to. But I cannot for the life of me, find the name of the song. If anybody out there knows what I'm talking about please don't hesitate to reply :) Thanks
No way those are the artists. No freckin' way. Someone has been going around and editing the wiki pages and such on cowboy bebop, saying that great guys like Josh Redman, Gary Bartz, and Chris Potter are playing on these tracks, when they aren't. If you want to see the New York Musician personnel, buy the soundtrack. There is no 1980 recording of clutch. It's the Japenese musicians listed in a previous post. Pranksters...
Absolutely right. I had a hard copy of this album and I think I'd remember if the "New York Personnel" were listed on there. Besides that, I don't think any serious jazz listener would take that to be the VSOP quintet.
Wikipedia lists the drummer as Joe Chambers. What a joke.
@PetrichorAllegory LOL who would believe it too? no offense to the bebop soundtrack, i love it, but guys like potter tend to leave their own stamp on the way they play thats completely their own. anyone who knows anything about jazz would shout bullshit!!
Yep. This wasn't recorded for the show though. It was recorded way back whenever and it was just put onto the Cowboy Bebop Future Blues OST. I think it's the only non-original trak on there.
Are you getting this from Wikipedia? The Future Blues article has the V.S.O.P. Quintet members listed for Clutch, but I'm certain this is not true. The musicians performing Clutch are:
drums - Yasuo Sano
bass - Tadashi Sase
guitar - Kazuhiko Michishita
piano - Yukiyoshi Arimasa
trumpet soloist - Tomonao Hara
saxophone soloist - Masato Honda
Also, all the CB soundtrack articles have the label listed as Blue Note, which is not true - all CB soundtracks were released by Victor Entertainment.
No the ones in the description are correct. This song is an overdub of the boys in the description from the 80s. I can say with 100% certainty that the soprano saxophonist is not Masato Honda because it is not the same tone or style that he has when he plays soprano...listen to his other stuff as much as I do and you will be able to say the same
Simply amazing; the work of great artists. Props to Yoko Kanno.

Some of the parts of this song remind me of PlayOnline's background music.
