Super Mario RPG is better if you want an involving adventure game. I like both quite a bit, though EWJ is more accessible. Don't choose between them, simply buy them both.

I would have prefered that Nintendo included Tetris Attack rather than Pokemon Puzzle League. Yes, PPL had better graphics and added a few new gameplay elements but the incredibly gay voices are preventing me from downloading it.

@DanteDMCry galiga is fun for a repeater of a level (like centipede or invaders) gradius is good if you like power ups, different guns, and a big boss at the end. i like river city ransom for action adventure.
It's not your typical shooter, so don't go in expecting Gradius or R-Type. The game isn't about hardcore action, though it certainly gets hard as you go along. It has a lot of interesting ideas, some of which are not fully realized. I say it's a good, but not great, game. But we're talking about $5, it's hard to feel bad about spending $5.
Lords of Thunder is one of the greatest 2D shooters of all time, you should give it a try. Also, I couldn't choose any of the Zelda games on the Virtual Console, since this is the Top 83 Games of 2008. There were no Zelda games uploaded last year.
