At 15:25 the camera should've just stayed there :) But really, the woman is actually saying that the rich people shouldn't get social security, isn't she? Only "people falling through the cracks"? Which makes sense, if it's a "safety net", then it should only kick in when you're having problems on your own, shouldn't it? If you're doing just fine after retirement on your private savings, why should the goverment look out for you?
Hoover doesn't quite get that the govt does not "take care of people" on Social Security. The Government administers the retirement fund that American workers contribute a portion of their earnings into. Why do they need a safety net? Because some people decide to feed their kids instead of investing in their retirement, some company executives raid pension funds, some 401k programs sink like a rock...things happen. Social Security belongs to the people who paid for it & it is solvent.
Social Security and Medicare are NOT a handouts! Workers contribute to the programs, investing in their retirement for decades. Recipients have not had a cost of living increase in over 2 years, thanks to manipulation of the market basket! Now, Republicans have the nerve to try to TAX seniors (cutting benefits = TAX) so that the wealthiest Americans can have permanent tax cuts! Bush's unfunded mandates have already increased state & local taxes. DON'T TAX SOCIAL SECURITY!
While I rarely agree with TYT, this is a fantastic interview. It was a great, frank conversation handled respectfully on both sides discussing pros & cons of different political and social principles. Well done TYT and Ms. Hoover.
Cenk is an idiot, laffer didn't invent the idea that low taxes can lead to higher receipts and it has nothing to do with supply side economics. It is just a basic observation.
The difference is that during Hoover's time, economics wasn't developed enough to know what to do during the Great Depression however Bush didn't have that excuse.
what safety net? we had and still have charity to take care people who do need real help. when you put big gov in to "take care of people' big bureaucracy and big corruption will happen.
Man, these are two intellectuals. That was a really intellectual talk, where I think sadly only about 10 percent of the population can even understand.
So the people so vehemently opposed to Fox News, I wonder, when you watch MSNBC do you consider that station only slightly liberal to moderate? I've watched both stations and from my POV as (overall) mostly a moderate, MSNBC is way more on the fringe than Fox News is. If what offended you most about Fox News is that they skew the "truth" as you see it, then I would think MSNBC would offend you more, unless you believe all the news they (do/don't) report.

This guy's thought pattern is what is wrong with this country. He is a freaking moron. Notice how he cannot effective debate an issue he flips around on every possible subject and can't complete a debate on single subject.
This guys does not know his history, Nor does he knows government. He tried beleives he may be smarter than Ms. Hoover when it turns out he's really dumb in asking questions with no real background check.
Herbert Hoover was an Idiot.Like the guy in the white house now. J.Edgar Hoover was a Homosexual who a Homophobic. Even while taking it up the backdoor all his life. She's a damned fool.
Oh, and we don't have a "free market". Big and important industries are heavily subsidized by the government. That's not exactly "Free market" economics.
Pres.Hoover is probably turning in his grave over her support for Bush and today's GOP.
He was probably the last peace president. He pulled most (if not all) troops from Latin America and went on a goodwill tour there to re-establish friendship again. He helped out suffering children from post-war Europe. He was a good caring and anti-imperialist (to a limit) president. Everything opposite to Bush and today's GOP.
We'd be waaaay better off with a Hoover than any GOP short of Rep.Paul.
Her grandfather ruined himself by collapsing our country like the current president. Poor girl, she will never be ale to run any office in this country. Her last name alone will send shivers through peoples spines. If i was her, i'd have my name changed. You never want to associate yourself to a loser.
She made good sense on the side of the selfish or the me-against-them crowd. It illustrates a lack of compassion on conservative side. When the government spends taxes on the wealthy, it's good business, but when it goes back to the people it's suddenly welfare.
Bring Margaret to TYT. Hell, bring Margaret to the White House. Conservative, Liberal... there's not that much difference anymore between the two, in the U.S. We just need COMPETENCE in the White House at this point.... COMPETENCE.
It's so rare to actually see an intelligent conversation these days, where the opposition actually has some points which you could disagree with but still has some truth to it. As opposed to an opposition party that had three nominees for the nomination of the PRESIDENCY not believe in evolution.
M Hoover: We spend the money we should have saved for social security, so we can't make it work anymore, so let's just forget about it! Robbery without consequence..Let's hope she needs it some day..
I like her. My problem with the medicaide system is that nursing homes and hospitals are set up to drain a person's resources until medicaide kicks in. The REAL problem lies in healthcare costs...Look at how nursing homes charge for their services....frightening!
It was a valiant effort Cenk but she simply wasn't listening to your argument. You listened to what she said and tried to see things from her perspective but she didn't reciprocate. The best we can hope for is your ideas would come back to her and she'll reflect on them. If only...
Of course she has a flaw in her argument. It is a safty net, but once we limited to only those that "need" it, it then becomes walfare, and she wouldn't like that and they would do away with it at that point. Can't win for losing here huh?
I disagree with her but atleast she intelligent it seems like ever damn conservative you see on tv or the internet isn't that bright she does argue her point very well.
Margret Hoover the ideologies that you propose are fine if you're born with a silver spoon in your mouth.
Regulating and enforcing tough Tariffs is not what caused the great depression. Totally corrupt deregulation mainly coming from REPIGZ NEOCONZ in the government stretching back to Taft and previously to the Aristocracy controlling the government during the Gilded Age is what caused the depression. Corruption, Graft and Deregulation.
Very well played on both sides of the table. It was amazing to see a fox news employee debating honestly, and openly. I did not agree with her side on the issues that were discussed(except somewhat on her family's place in history). However all her arguments were delivered with sincerity and intelligence. It was a refreshing debate, and I hope TYT has her on again.
Let's be honest the cause of the current economic problems have been caused primarily by supply side economics, deficit spending, and Friedman inspired deregulation.
There is a lot of misconceptions about Hoover, and though I do think he played a part in causing the Great Depression here in the states, it's not necessarily the reasons people suspect. For instance, he wasn't totally "laissez-faire." Harding was much more minimalist and laissez-faire and the downturn during his presidency was much quicker. Also, if it were just a problem of laissez-faire, the Depression would've ended once FDR got in, but it didn't. It lasted his entire presidency.
What caused the Crash was first credit inflation which took place during the Roaring 20's and the subsequent credit deflation that was inevitable. Hoover had little to do with that.
But enough with that topic, this lady can talk extremely fast.
Forgot me mention, Bush is anything but laissez-faire or fiscally conservative. He's the most fiscally irresponsible president in US history. The absolute worst. So he can't really be compared to Hoover--or any president in US history for that matter.
With the estate tax, then the truly "surplus" portion of social security benefits (those going to rich people) end up right back in the public coffers anyway. So unless you're in favor of eliminating it (I realize that Republicans are because they're rich, uncaring people), there's no problem with it. Duh.
This sounds harsh, but you can tell a liar when they struggle through a verbal olympics to try and explain their views. Truth spills out, truth oozes out. This lady doesn't believe her own words and it's obvious.
She's mixing up the situation. Canada does have a Registered Retirement Savings Plan, which allows for tax deductions of up to 20%. This has not impacted on the Canada Pension Plan.
There has been no privatization of the health care system here whatsoever. We simply balance our books, by taxing as much as we spend. It's called responsibility.
i like her. i don't agree with everything she said but i like her. She's intelligent and articulate. This is a healthy non-violent debate. But i did checkout 15.16. Man i'm a loser.
The great grandaughter of the great depression is going to defend bushes economic disaster. Irony at it's finest. Hey lets help one piece of shit look a little better, by listening to the spawn of the idiot who was president during the GREAT DEPRESSION i.e another piece of shit.
I actually think what both Hoover and Bush have down to this country negates what every other good of even great republican has ever done. In fact I still think we're not even yet.
Franklin Delano Roosevelt was president for the remainder of the Great Depression (an entire decade). If a person can't defend Hoover because he was president during the Great Depression, how can people defend FDR? Your logic says you can't.
Because the GDP started going up almost as soon as FDR took office, the average yearly rate of growth during the first few years of his presidency was around or above 10%.
Thank you studio7, I hate it when liars try to defend other liars. Even though Unhealthy should have known I didn't mean just any President that was in office during that time, but THE President that allowed and contributed to the CAUSE of it all in the first place. But thanks for destroying the weak attempt and lie.
So she's the spawn of the wonderful Herbert Hoover. She's the ungreat granddaughter of the great depression. I love how she even to this day tries to spin and defend her horrific ungreat grandfather. LOL, bitch you're the leftover spawn of incompetent shit. You and Jenna Bush should start a club and try to defend their family names.
LOL,this is the true genetic garbage. Not based upon race or religion. Just purely scientific. This is the genetic garbage Darwin said would die out. Come on Scien
If the economy is ok, i.e. Consumer spending - accounts for 70-75% of GDP, then YES, tax cuts add to the revenue if they are targeted at consumers. If R targeted at Equipment purchases, case by case, & are limited in scope of effectiveness.
If targeted at Wealthy, they provide Negative economic growth when the economy is in trouble. Wealthy do not spend like poorer consumers do. They invest in market, that doesnt translate to real GDP for which the Consumer market is affected or does affect.
Social Security is empty? run out of money? The US is borrowing for Social Security?
WHAT ABOUT BORROWING FOR THE MILITARY AND WAR!? Isn't it be more humane, compassionate, etc. to borrow for social security and health care than for warmongering? Jeez, it's scary how uncompassionate so many American right-wingers are.
Hoover isn't responsible for the Great Depression, but he and his administration were incompetent, and completely ineffective in getting us out of it. That's how he became one of the most despised presidents of all time.
The Military Industrial Complex (otherwise known as the US gov't) need to pay back the SS trust fund PLUS at least 6% interest. Then, we need to tax ALL income for SS, not just payroll up to a certain amount. THEN, we eliminate anyone with a net worth of $1million at age 65 from receiving benefits. PRoblem solved.
i think you should look at it empirically, the most prosperous, free, healthy and democratic countries in the world are also those with the highest ratio of government, sweden, denmark finnland, belgium aso.
to create and sustain a government teaches people to actually be active responsible citizens, merely tolerating government as a necessary evil will lead to neglect and decay of the institution
Wilson caused the Great Depression by signing the Federal Reserve Act in 1913 giving the international banking cartel ownership of our national currency & complete control of monetary policy.
That my be part of the reason, but not the only one. A lot of it had to do with rampant, irresponsible market speculation, and the erosion of government regulations on trade. It seems that whenever an administration decides that the government should have fewer trade laws(aka Laissez-faire government), we end up in a recession or a depression. We will always need not only global free trade, but also laws that regulate fair trade across the board.
I agree, I was just talking (typing) in reference to specific, direct presidential action(s). (blaming presidents). Wilson should shoulder much more blame for the depression than Hoover but, the 'historians' don't want to draw attention to the Fed Reserve Act. There is no such thing as 'free trade', btw. It's more like, 'Imperialism'. Fair trade would be great. But, don't count on either Dem or GOP to deliver that.
According the the PEW Research Center for Journalism Fox News was the most fair of all the major news outlets. Fox News is the most watched cable news channel with more than 2 times the average viewers of most biased MSNBC.
I agree that more people watch Fox News than far-left MSNBC. But as a TRUE independent, I know not 2 believe in these Dem or Republican "researches". Everyone should know that both Fox & MSNBC are horrifically biased. If we need info from right-winged PEW 2 justify Fox, we're in trouble.
Government used to be the major threat to individual liberty and prosperity. Then the people took the power of gov. into their own hands. Our masters then switched to economics as the primary source of control, gaining power and slowly moving back into politics, changing from a direct influence to an indirect influence. Make no mistake, our owners have still got us by the balls. Republicans are stuck in the past, claiming gov. is the bad guy, but we are the gov., we need to take the power back.
First of all, we ALL pay into SS system. Money gets taking out of EVERYONE's paycheck. Why is it so hard to understand we ALL should get SS? I work my ass off and I've been putting my hard earned money into this system for more than 20 years. I better get my SS benefit when I retire. They should pass a law that prohibits government from borrowing money from SS. Free markets DO not benefit everyone. Go down to Mexico & see what its done. That is why people are migrating here!
i find it interesting that her argument is that we can't go on with social security because there's nothing left... but doesn't acknowledge the SNAFU that the government SHOULDN'T have borrowed out of our SS pot. Like "oh, well, let's not talk about how the government fucked up, let's just fix it!" ... Riiiggghht....
According to "free market" logic and "math", someone who makes less works less...according to the free market ideology, someone at Wal-Mart would not work overtime, because they would rather stay home...of course this totally ignores that the Wal-Mart employee has no capital (savings), is poor, and cannot afford not to work. The reason the "free market" analysis is BS is because it lives in a fantasy land where the impossible becomes true!
? your argument sucks, its not even close to adressing free market v.s. regulated. and where did u get this information: "According to "free market" logic and "math", someone who makes less works less"??
In the end its all about efficiency and the most of the time the free market is the most efficient. However, regulations are needed to handle issues such as basic accounting principles and minnimum wage(as u mentioned...kinda)
"As the wage rate falls, so too will the number of hours worked...So according to economists, a fall in the wage rate should mean that workers will substantially reduce their incomes, and simultaneously devote more time to 'lesiure activities'...The only way that workers could behave as economics fantasises is if they have alternative sources of income" (Keen 125)
I picked that example to show you how the logic of the free market doesn't accord with reality.
Comparative advantage is only beneficial for those who already have greater means than others, i.e. the rich. This is why the US in the 19th century had very high tariff rates because the UK had such a large advantage in industry that if the US merely imported much cheaper British goods, the US would not have industrialized. Flashback 1860: The South was pro-"comparative advantage" and the North pro-interventionism. The civil war was over tariffs and industrialization vs. comparative advantage.
economics is a fairly new science, and there is no way you can compare 19th century tariffs to modern day economic practices
and no, comparative advantage benefits all participants. some may recive more benefit than others but all parties will still be better off. Just look at the EU and the huge benefits of economic integration and free trade are obviouse.
The only reason the US still has protectionist policies is becuase voters are dumb and politicians are concerned with winning elections
I actually like this woman. I mean.. I don't agree with what she is saying, but she's not just screaming about how "liberals are evil" and "pro killing babies and pro sodomy"
yeah, she doesnt seem crazy! she doesnt understand much about economics but she is still using logic to debate cenk which i havnt seen much from republicans!
Yeah, it's a civil, issues-based discussion. Passionate and intelligent, but it doesn't go over the top into character assassination. It's such a relief to hear.
see she's actually not a jerk. Fox gets such a black eye because they decide who the biggest blowhard jerk is and put him on prime time. This woman should be their centerpiece.
I can disagree with her but I don't feel my bloodpressure rising just having to endure exposure to her.
*sigh* The great depression was caused on purpose to confiscate wealth. The Federal Reserve is a group of private International Bankers, robbing the people at every opportunity. People need to look up facts from that time.
This is why America is in the problems it has. People laugh at and thumb down the truth. GO look up the info from independent sources of the day. Mindless Sheeple. The Federal Reserve is as Federal as Federal Express -and that's no joke!

She made good sense on the side of the selfish or the me-against-them crowd. It illustrates a lack of compassion on conservative side. When the government spends taxes on the wealthy, it's good business, but when it goes back to the people it's suddenly welfare.

UnhealthySalad 3 years ago
What caused the Crash was first credit inflation which took place during the Roaring 20's and the subsequent credit deflation that was inevitable. Hoover had little to do with that.
But enough with that topic, this lady can talk extremely fast.
UnhealthySalad 3 years ago
Forgot me mention, Bush is anything but laissez-faire or fiscally conservative. He's the most fiscally irresponsible president in US history. The absolute worst. So he can't really be compared to Hoover--or any president in US history for that matter.

With the estate tax, then the truly "surplus" portion of social security benefits (those going to rich people) end up right back in the public coffers anyway. So unless you're in favor of eliminating it (I realize that Republicans are because they're rich, uncaring people), there's no problem with it. Duh.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt was president for the remainder of the Great Depression (an entire decade). If a person can't defend Hoover because he was president during the Great Depression, how can people defend FDR? Your logic says you can't.
UnhealthySalad 3 years ago
Because the GDP started going up almost as soon as FDR took office, the average yearly rate of growth during the first few years of his presidency was around or above 10%.

FattKidd 3 years ago
i think you should look at it empirically, the most prosperous, free, healthy and democratic countries in the world are also those with the highest ratio of government, sweden, denmark finnland, belgium aso.
to create and sustain a government teaches people to actually be active responsible citizens, merely tolerating government as a necessary evil will lead to neglect and decay of the institution
random0815 3 years ago
Wilson caused the Great Depression by signing the Federal Reserve Act in 1913 giving the international banking cartel ownership of our national currency & complete control of monetary policy.
FattKidd 3 years ago
That my be part of the reason, but not the only one. A lot of it had to do with rampant, irresponsible market speculation, and the erosion of government regulations on trade. It seems that whenever an administration decides that the government should have fewer trade laws(aka Laissez-faire government), we end up in a recession or a depression. We will always need not only global free trade, but also laws that regulate fair trade across the board.
phoenixatom 3 years ago
I agree, I was just talking (typing) in reference to specific, direct presidential action(s). (blaming presidents). Wilson should shoulder much more blame for the depression than Hoover but, the 'historians' don't want to draw attention to the Fed Reserve Act. There is no such thing as 'free trade', btw. It's more like, 'Imperialism'. Fair trade would be great. But, don't count on either Dem or GOP to deliver that.

That is why people are migrating here!

fuck the myth of the free market
uru86 3 years ago 2
...u cant argue with math. Math shows us that free trade benefits everyone.
There are alot of exceptions where its gov. job to step in and regulate but in general free market and market integration is the way to go
jesusninjapants 3 years ago
According to "free market" logic and "math", someone who makes less works less...according to the free market ideology, someone at Wal-Mart would not work overtime, because they would rather stay home...of course this totally ignores that the Wal-Mart employee has no capital (savings), is poor, and cannot afford not to work. The reason the "free market" analysis is BS is because it lives in a fantasy land where the impossible becomes true!
uru86 3 years ago 2
? your argument sucks, its not even close to adressing free market v.s. regulated. and where did u get this information: "According to "free market" logic and "math", someone who makes less works less"??
In the end its all about efficiency and the most of the time the free market is the most efficient. However, regulations are needed to handle issues such as basic accounting principles and minnimum wage(as u mentioned...kinda)
Look up comparatice advantage
jesusninjapants 3 years ago
Where I got it:
"As the wage rate falls, so too will the number of hours worked...So according to economists, a fall in the wage rate should mean that workers will substantially reduce their incomes, and simultaneously devote more time to 'lesiure activities'...The only way that workers could behave as economics fantasises is if they have alternative sources of income" (Keen 125)
I picked that example to show you how the logic of the free market doesn't accord with reality.
uru86 3 years ago
well, i my econ. prof stated basicly the exact opposite, that people will ironically work harder and more when profits are poor, so...
jesusninjapants 3 years ago
Comparative advantage is only beneficial for those who already have greater means than others, i.e. the rich. This is why the US in the 19th century had very high tariff rates because the UK had such a large advantage in industry that if the US merely imported much cheaper British goods, the US would not have industrialized. Flashback 1860: The South was pro-"comparative advantage" and the North pro-interventionism. The civil war was over tariffs and industrialization vs. comparative advantage.
uru86 3 years ago
economics is a fairly new science, and there is no way you can compare 19th century tariffs to modern day economic practices
and no, comparative advantage benefits all participants. some may recive more benefit than others but all parties will still be better off. Just look at the EU and the huge benefits of economic integration and free trade are obviouse.
The only reason the US still has protectionist policies is becuase voters are dumb and politicians are concerned with winning elections
jesusninjapants 3 years ago
Social Security wouldn't be bankrupt if our government didn't keep stealing from it to pay for wars and tax cuts for the top 1%.
