Here's what he picked: L'Avventura The Night Porter Symbiopsychotaxiplasm Mouchette When a Woman Ascends the Stairs W.R. Mysteries of the Organism Robinson Crusoe On Mars Mala Noche House Black Narcissus Days of Heaven The Thin Red Line Brand Upon the Brain!
Guy Maddin is awesome! I do agree that as a cinephile I wouldn't know what to do in this room. Plus this makes me mad too because I used to have L'Avventura and Fanny & Alexander the Criterion versions and I cant find them now!
@Misterioso Knew what? Look, dude. You seem like a fellow set in his ways. But Criterion is devoted to filmmakers with a unique voice. Pretentious or not, Guy Maddin has contributed something. It's not as if he broke in. If they want to let them have a bag of DVDs, who gives a shit?
It still amazes me how you guys (Criterion) still haven't added Ingmar Bergman's "Persona" and Federico Fellini's "La Dolce Vita" (two of the greatest films ever made) to the list. BAG!!!
We may also get The Saddest Music In The World from the looks of these tags -- I know that was MGM at one point, with whom Criterion also has an ongoing relationship.
@ChristopherKnudsen My Winnipeg MUST be on the way -- it's distributed by IFC in the US, and I can't think of any other reason he would be wandering around in their offices.
@jonathanyadirbq He speaks about "L'Avventura" earlier in the clip, but I'm referring to about 2/3 of the way through (minute 2:07) -- definitely not "L'Avventura" he's speaking about.
Also, yeah, that beard is wild. He looks nothing like he usually does.
see it as motivation to hit the artistic highs so that you're let through the castle gate -- kind of like how celebrities have access to guest suites all over the place.
@net31rec As for the "large source of income," I don't think someone like Guy Maddin is positively rolling in the dough or anything. Unlikely that "My Winnipeg" was a $10 million payday for him.
I do find it kind of surprising that some of the people who come and select films don't have certain films already in their collection. I'd think with such a large source of income all film makers would own the entire collection. But I can't wait for more of these videos, they are interesting.
@net31rec Since when do filmmakers make such a large source of income? LOL. I'm sure Guy Maddin is just rolling in doe from the box office of "The Saddest Music in the World." If you ever worked in the industry or studied it, i think you would see how very little filmmakers make and how small budgets are for non-hollywood blockbusters. We're talking no more than a few hundred thousands. Most of them work so much they don't have time to watch every movie either, much less own them.
@OhNoItsGojira A. I work in the industry and I know how much directors make from all sort of sales and licensing. No shit they don't have time to watch every movie - but when something is your FAVORITE film and you are in that industry and you don't own it.....that is pretty mind-blowing.
@net31rec So all directors are fabulously wealthy and should be expected to own all their favorite films on a DVD format? If I had the means I'd have 35mm prints like a lot of directors do. That's how your properly view films at home.
So, when will see a regular Criterion fan, of the many who've made Criterion what it is today, allowed into that room? It's obvious, after watching all of these "Picks" videos, that most of the "chosen" filmmakers haven't watched anywhere near as many Criterion discs as those who've BOUGHT them over the years at premium prices. So how about a shout-out to us regular Joes who've happily kept Criterion afloat all these years, with a contest to let some REAL fans in that room?
@Coolestmovies I see your point and would love to join you on your endeavor, but for reals?? That's kind of like saying I buy Sony products over the years and expect to be at their board profit sharing...
@OhNoItsGojira ---- But Sony doesn't shoot videos of directors picking freebie DVDs from the shelves of a backroom in their offices. Criterion does. And in a small way, it feels like they could reward one of the thousands of fans who've kept them afloat all these years. Just for kicks. I'd still be envious (if it wasn't me), but I think it was a more admirable thing to do. :)
@Coolestmovies They certainly don't and we don't even know how long this has been going on off public record!!! LOL. I totally agree though. A random, regular Criterion invite would be wonderful! I would approach it with the utmost modesty and respect for any parameters presented before entering the room.
After some advanced audio analysis, I think it must be Vigo's "L'Atalante," although it sounds like "Ladolante" (yet I admit I have never once heard a real person say the title of the film). Hopefully that's a none-too-subtle insider's hint that Criterion will be issuing said film soon.
What does he say is, along with "Days of Heaven," his favorite movie ever? "La volande"? "Lavaland"? I feel like my film nerd license should be revoked because I cannot even remotely figure out what he's saying.
"So I immediately went for the box sets..." LOL Can blame him.
