I have understood this entire scene, I understand the importance of it. I am 13.

R has suffered a lot so he feels entitled to do whatever he wants - even entangling Jane in a polygamist marriage. He doesn't consider how she will feel about this if she knew. So he deceives her because he's selfish and possesive. However, he doesn't realize until later her strength of will and she will not cave in to him. Later on R realizes his wrongdoing in the case of Jane and God brings them together again.
