The Island UK vinyl release has the long versions of three tracks, while the Warner-Brothers USA vinyl release and CD have the short versions of the three tracks. Those three tracks are:
"Loveland" at 8:35. "Cake" at 7:46. "Throw That Beat In the Garbage Can" at 5:40.
I have the Island UK vinyl and I prefer that to the Warner-Brothers CD release. I, too felt ripped off when I listened to the CD.
It would seem there are 2 or 3 versions of the song that were made. This is from a 1981 vinyl copy of "Mesopotamia" bought in the UK, so is an original version !
I can't believe I am still hearing new stuff......I mean old stuff that I missed. Guess I'm not a true blue B52s fan otherwise I would have remembered it. But this song is amazing. Yes, Cindy.....sigh....raw talent supreme. Thanks for this.......
I had this on a tape many years ago - same album on both sides!! But it had the (I thought) 9 min version i.e this one....I love the band but I also love repetitive toons so this one is made for me. Weakest of their albums but still has 3 good'uns on it. Anyway, the tape got stuck in my car going to Wales from London and we were stuck with this for 2 1/2 hours!!! Most miffed when I bought album and got short version! Thank you so much for posting the full version...

This version was never domestically released here in the USA. This mix of the Mesopotamia album was released as an ISLAND IMPORT ON 12" VINYL ONLY. It was ONLY PROMOTIONAL AND EXTREMELY RARE. When Mesopotamia was finally released on CD in the early 90s, first as an ISLAND IMPORT, it sadly had the domestic mixes on it. I luckily have two copies of the import vinyl LP and the remixes ROCK!
you didn't get conned you got this song by mistake its the original unedited version which i cant lie i like the other none remastered original US LP release better
I think there were actually two versions of this LP: UK and US. I have two copies of the US LP, and the mix is totally different. Perhaps the CD reissue follows the US pressing?
@Astromante 100% correct. And there's a third mix when Party Mix and Mesopotamia were re-issued in 1990 and Tom Durack re-mixed the shortened US vinyl/overseas CD versions.
Not one of my favourites of theirs, but when I noticed they'd put a different version on the CD re-release, that was a red rag to a bull, so I had to dig out and dust down the original vinyl version !
Well that's what I thought. But to be honest I think the song is too long ! But that doesn't give some eejit the right just to chop and change the original track just to suit himself. The fact that the CD version is exactly 5 minutes long is a dead giveaway !
Are they extended on this vinyl album as well ? Or I should say longer, because this is the original album. I always have to wash the mould off the vinyl that comes off the covers first (all my records sat in a box in a damp cupboard for years), which is a real pain. So I don't know when I'll get around to it. But I've dug the album out, so that's the first step !
@roddy76to86 Yes, they actually are, or so I've heard. Basically, there are three mixes of "Mesopotamia": two were released by Island and Warner Bros. simultaneously on vinyl and cassette. The Island version had extended editions of the three songs I mentioned, possibly due to a master tape shuffle by the record company. When it came to reissue these on CD, Island used the Warner Bros. mixes for the CD while Warner repackaged it with "Party Mix!" and added a few small (but noticeable) changes.
@roddy76to86 There's EVEN MORE confusion: if you look at the WIkipedia Mesopotamia article and the Amazon comments for Paul McGrath's (excellent) review, you'll realize that not all of the Island Rec. vinyls had the extended version; yours obviously does, but this only adds to the confusion. In additon, there are two Island CDs: one was released in 1982 and has a blue Island logo on the CD, the other (released in 1990) is a reissue with a different logo.
Were CDs being made in 1982 ? I have a CD I bought cheap when my LP's were in "hiding". I've played it and "Lava" is not there. It's not listed on the CD itself either, but is listed on the back cover. The front cover is the same as the vinyl LP. And every date on it is 1982. I can't remember when or where I bought it, but it was well after 1990, labelled "Island" and "Island Masters". I think this must be the 1990 re-issue, they've just not put 1990 on it. Very sneaky !
@roddy76to86 According to Discogs Island did two CDs: one for 1982 (blue Island logo on CD, generic CD code on the liner notes, and "Lava" (error) and "Cake" both listed as the fourth track), and another reissued in 1990 (smaller "palm tree" island logo on CD, uses an Egyptian font for CD code, has Lava (error) as the fifth track and the next two as sixth and seventh). CDs were around by October 1982, though WIkipedia says this album was released in January.
Your description of the 1990 re-issue exactly matches my CD.
They maybe released the vinyl and tape cassette in January 1982, then the CD later. I remember about the time when CDs came out you could buy 5 LP's for the same price, and CDs were cheaper to make. Same with the players and a turntable. Rip off ! And it wasn't until years later that some genius invented a device so that CDs could actually be used in a car, portable hi-fi, or a walkman. I hate the record industry.
@roddy76to86 I hate them as well. It's insane and criminally insulting how these mixes haven't been put on CD, and not worth the money. Funnily enough, the Rolling Stone ads for "Mesopotamia" proclaimed "Dance through Reganomics at a price you can afford!" I'd say 5.98 for six songs is a good deal (as Robert Christgau puts it), but it's just ridiculous how when Island and Warner re-released in 1990, there were NO extended mixes and NO missing tracks, not to mention using the shortened versions.
@roddy76to86 Both versions errenously list "Lava" as an extra track; this is due to a last-minute decision in the UK to release Party Mix and Mesopotamia on one CD that was never corrected eight years later when it got a reissue in the UK. Version one has Lava and Cake as track four, with Throw That Beat and Nip it in the Bud as tracks five and six while version two (which I own) has Lava as track five, with Throw That Beat and Nip it in the Bud as tracks six and seven.
@roddy76to86 Side-notE: I quite like this version, but I am rather sad how the spacey noise part towards the end is stripped down. It was very inventive and "zoned-out".

sure it is from 81. it is a the usual maxi version of the original with unneeded patterns in the medley.
most songs in this time had exactly these gadgetry as a maxisingle, mostly published in time with the original short version.
