I would have to say that Panic didn't change their style to appeal to a new fanbase because that album flopped and the direction they went was to try and create a "timeless" album. I understand what you're trying to say, but Panic was a bad example. Maybe Green Day would be a better example. They became dramatically more pop to please a younger crowd, compared to their earlier albums.
