airbags deploy in split seconds after 2 or more sensors set of on a vehicle. the reason they go off so fast and hard is because of sodium azide. not sure if the spellings right but its an ingrediant in rocket fuel. the white stuff that looks like smoke in the air is actually talcum powder that the bags are packed in so they deploy smoothly. the reason why air bags are stolen out of cars is because the ball bearings and sensor material are made of actual gold. i learned soemthing in school !!

I remember doing this all the time as a parts manager at a local auto dealership. It's not a waste of money. These things can't be returned to the supplier, and they can't be thrown away unless deployed. :)

i blew up an airbag from a jaguar once. me and my roomates put it in a bucket and let my brother look in there then we set it off right in his face. it was very funny but yet dangerous

Yes, Great times (one of the perks of being an auto tech). However, I would not recommend disposing more than one airbag at a time, for fear that collateral damage is more likely to occur.( I've seen where more than one has been deployed at a time, but they had at least 10 or more feet between them and were out in the remote country side.
